Re: Mottos for use in games

Conan the B once lead a army with the battle cry "Hell or Plunder!". We used it as our unit name in Battletech.

Sic Semper Tyrannus! - This always to tyrants! Used by Brutus when murdering Ceasar, by John Wilkes Booth when assassinating Lincoln, and the state motto of Virginia.

Semper Paratus - Always Ready, the motto of the Coast Guard.

In God We Trust. All Others We Detect, Track, and Report. - motto of radar operators.

Re: Mottos for use in games

oh that...

Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women.

or there other Conan (O'Brien) motto...

Vroom! Vroom! Party Starter!

The quote predates Conan by a few hundred years. It's a ancient Mongol saying made popular by Timajen (Ghengis Khan).

Actually, "from a certain point of view" (thank you Obi-wan) Conan predates Ghengis Khan by a few thousand years given the novels' timeline.

P.S.

Just how many SH's *are* there on this board? ;-)

Re: Mottos for use in games

I ran a short-lived Rebel Special Forces campaign in grad school. One of the soldiers' date=' considering a fight with several times their number of stormtroopers, quipped, "We're not outnumbered; we're in a target rich environment."[/quote']

This has become one of my new favorites.

I'm pretty sure the quote predates Living Steel, but for that RPG there were tons of buttons, mostly based off of one example chars quotes.

One being:

"Remember, once you pull his pin, Mr. Hand Grenade is no longer your friend."

I have some of them tucked away somewhere, I'll have to see if I can find them

Or I can find a website: http://www.geocities.com/totalsystemtechnologies/livsteel.htm

Lem, that sounds like "Murphy's Laws of Combat Operations", which included that comment on grenades, and other useful gems as...

"In case you forget, the claymore is pointed at you."

and

"The easy way is mined."

and

"Don't forget to let the enemy know that you've secured the area."

and

"Don't draw fire, it antagonizes your squadmates."

Very true. I'm sure there's cross pollination since Living Steel was out in the 80s' date=' but some of the terms predated the RPG.[/quote']

Does that have anything to do with the "Dragonstar Rising" board game? One side's powered armored troops were call "Living Steel Regiments".

Same universe. In fact, I seem to recall something about them being compatible.

Civil War motto "Be Prepared"

meaning be prepared to die, seems we nasty, sneaky insurrections slipped that into the Boy Scouts without you needling carpet baggers even noticing.

"Follow me" Army Rangers, as I recall.

"We provide the enemy with the utmost opportunity to die for his country."

"Don't tread on me" former state motto of Virginia I think.

Actually it is "Rangers Lead the Way" which comes from the command given at D-Day: "Rangers, lead the way off this beach!" on the assault of Point du Hoc.

"Follow Me" is a sort of standard order given by an NCO to lead men into battle. It is also the name of the first war game rules I ever played.

I've no idea about Virginia - but the phrase comes from the Navy during the Revolutionary War when Sout Carolina Colonel Gadsden commissioned a yellow flag with a coiled rattlesnake and the words Don't Tread On Me under it.

The Gadsden Flag is the earliest known use of that phrase in the US I'm aware of.

The only places I've really seen in it modern times is South Carolina and the occasional Boy Scout Troop (I never asked...)

Re: Mottos for use in games

The character's called Broom ("He doesn't use a Street Sweeper, he is one!")

Broom: I'm gonna pound ya flat, fold ya up, stick a stamp on ya, and mail ya ta jail!

GM: Don't bother rollin' dice, your PRE Attack worked. You can tell by the smell.

I think this belongs in "Quote of the Week" not in mottoes.
