Characters from Autoduel Champions

Recommended Posts

Waaaay back in 1983, Steve Jackson Games and Hero Games joined forces to produce Autoduel Champions, a supplement for Car Wars and Champions. Recently, someone on the boards mentioned running a scenario akin to the old Car Wars adventure Sunday Drivers, which made me think of (and recommend) Autoduel Champions. Digging out my copy, I decided to try updating the Hero System characters to 6E.

Considering when Autoduel Champions was written, converting from what looks to be 2E Hero characters to 6E results in some pretty crude designs. Which isn't to say they're poorly written (Aaron Allston did the work after all), it's just they are lacking in many things I've come to expect from more modern characters. The characters (and vehicles) while serviceable, could see a lot of expansion in Skills, Skill Levels, Perks, Talents, and so on, depending on how cinematic and/or complete you'd want to make them.

I'd like to mention that both Hero Designer and The Ultimate Vehicle came in quite handy doing these conversions and updates. I also tried my best to not alter the characters in any way, but simply present them as written, just updated for 6E.

Re: Characters from Autoduel Champions

Well, there you go. While the NPCs might not all that useful for most games, the vehicles could be pressed into service as Champions supercars (especially for Viper), a Dark Champions vehicle, or even a post-apoc combat car.

Re: Characters from Autoduel Champions

I don't know. I think once GURPS came out SJG probably had no further desire to support Autoduel Champions. GURPS Autoduel did convert a number of vehicles from Car Wars to GURPS, and the GURPS Autoduel 1e rules were almost a straight port of Car Wars' vehicle design system to GURPS numbers.

I wonder how convertible they'd be? I'd never thought about it until now.

Why'd you put car in quotes? If it has wheels, it's a car. :P

And thanks. This is one of my favorite vehicles. I'd rep you if I hadn't already gotten you for this thread.

It's 30' long and has eight wheels! That's not a car, that's a bus!

Yep, Autoduel Champions came out during the 2e Champions run. The base rules didn't have any skills besides Acrobatics, Martial Arts, Detective Work and Combat skill Levels. The Supplement Champions II introduced many of the skills that Appeared in Espionage and Justice Inc. So those sparsely written up characters were the norm. Also no skills meant that building characters with 200-250 pts was pretty easy.

Thanks for doing those conversions. It takes me back to when that was new.

I wonder if there were any more official Car Wars designs written for HERO.

Sigh....now you've gone and done it...given me a reason to sift thru my old copies of Autoduel Quarterly (and Space Gamer too).

And, once again, I must spread rep.....but till then, thanks for the nostalgia !

Re: Characters from Autoduel Champions

SJ Games did do a GURPS Autoduel supplement, and even a 2nd edition in 96. There is and extensive AADA Road Atlas and Survival Guide, and a section on available technology.
