Create a Villain Theme Team!

(My homage to a one-shot Spider-Man villain. The names have been changed because, well, it's been years since I read that particular comic issue.)

The villain known as Buzz Kill is a mercenary, Mickey Tannen, who stole the inventions of a frustrated entomologist named Dr. Frank Driscoll. Driscoll had discovered that certain insect noises, when greatly amplified, could cause not only distraction, but also disorientation, deafness, physical damage, and in some cases even fatal injuries. Dr. Driscoll had used his amplifier and recorded insect noises to attempt robberies after learning that none of his research grants were being renewed, but was stopped (rather easily) by a solo superhero. Tannen learned about the battle, and broke into the police evidence locker to steal Driscoll's equipment. He upgraded the gear (for one thing, having digital recordings on an MP3 player worked much better than the cassette tapes Driscoll used), mounted it in a stolen flying battlesuit, and went into business as an assassin. He joined Hive because frankly, his defenses aren't up to concerted attacks by superheroes.

No Flies on Me !

Some villains have unusual powers but the power to summon flies must surely be one of the most useless. Or is it ? John Dixon found he could control flies but it was only when he saw films of swarms of bees and the film the Swarm that he really kicked up a gear. He used his powers to summon a cloud of flies that could surround him and he also unleashed them against others while he could calmly rob jewellers and other high class places. Flies on camera lenses are very useful.

One of the other members of The Hive heard about his exploits on TV and decided to track him down and recruit him. John happily joined as there is safety in numbers.

Beetle Metamorph

If insects prove any great evolutionary achievement; it would be for life to reshape itself. From egg to larva to catalysts to insect, Beetle metamorph moves through changes quickly constantly reimagining herself.

She shapes her form

as insect or wurm

as tunneler or pincer armed

or parasite warmed

by the blood of a host

left hollow and torn

drinking to code

for another life form.

The Horned One knew his formula would give him power. He wasn't too pleased that it turned him into a giant insect man. Still between the superstrength, armor, flight, dewath chirp, and ramming horn he finds it an acceptable trade off. Just as he finds taking orders from the Hive and getting their aid and resources an acceptable trade off. At least until he can finish the formula to make an army of warrior bettlemen who obey only him.

No one knows the identity of Brown Recluse, not even the rest of the Hive. Of course, none of them are brave enough to comment that technically, a brown recluse is an arachnid, not an insect. Whoever he or she is though, he's smart enough to plan the crimes and contingency back-ups of the team. Those criminals who dare to cross or infringe upon the Hive's territory soon end up alone, trapped and dying in agony from an unknown toxin. As has two z-grade vigilante heroes who thought they could find the Recluse...

New Team: The Collegium

Number: 5

Theme: The Collegium are teachers and professors -- OF CRIME! They're all semi-retired, but look to teach their skills of villainy to promising students. Sometimes, they can't resist doing a little "field work".

Cancer appears to be a mild mannered astronomy professor at first glance. But as certain students will find out, he has beheld the Colour Out of Space, and has been partially possessed by the Old Ones, who have given him certain psionic and dimension-warping powers to help him spread chaos on the Earth and prepare it for their arrival.

It more or less says as much on my signature on these forums.

Doctor Damnation was, durring the so called 'silver age', an armored villian out to conque the world. He quickly went into retierment as it became noticable that Doctor Destroyer did exactly what he could do, but with more power behind him. After Destroyer's "death", he became semi-retiered, and now dedicates himself to teaching the next generation of villians about the joys of power armor.

As a chemist Peter Payne decided to examine old alchemical texts as he figured that was where chemistry got it's start. As he expected most of them were full of pusedomystical nonsence that were more harmful that helpful. However he found some that actually seemed to make sence. He tested them out and replaced the formulas with more modern ingredients. He managed to make liquids that could give him enhanced strength, create a large mass of goo, wither people, create a gust of wind capable of moving him, and cause inanimate objects to melt.

Calling himself Potion he ran rampant for a few months. Then he discovered something. While none of the potions lasted very long the illness breathing the fumes from making them caused was very permanent. Deciding not to let an ill timed coughing fit to land him in prison he retired from active villainy and joined the Collegium. While for the most part he's content to showing others to commit better crimes through chemistry, the urge for one last big caper is always there.

Professor Craxman teaches old school methods of burglary as he was The Cracksman a master cat burgler. He takes promising students out to teach them the practocal side and also to evaluate them in the field. In his late 40s or early 50s in appearance, he seems absent minded when dealing with his collegues but is absolutely focused when out on a job.

! will abdicate a new team to Nothere unless he fails to post by Monday in which case I will post a new team.

Well this is so unexpected. You like me you really like me.

Anatol Gesrho knew financing a mad scientist was a risky idea, but he was never really concerned with risk. Which was good when the scientist started talking about the other dimensional energy flow being too dangerous, but having found an opposite dimension to minimize the effects. Anatol went out to the remote lab to check on the "limitless power experiment". Fortunatly for him he was only at the door when the building blew up. He found himself capable of surrounding himself with a black or white aura, and creating large squares of the same energy. The black would harm anyone who came into contact with them, the white would heal. The idea of becoming a supervillian quickly came to him. However he had a problem. He couldn't use the black energy squares constantly. He had to switch from black to white. There was nothing else for it. He was going to have to hire some help to cover for when he was only able to heal.

So adopting a black and white checkered suit and mask, and calling himself Othello He began looking for a villain with opposite charecteristics. He found five and called the team Janus.

Opposites Attract/Attack

It is an unusual superpower to be able to create an opposite of someone but quite effective and lethal when used on those with superpowers. Carlos Hernandez has this power which he uses to create a duplicate of someone he is fighting who then attacks said hero/villain. He also has one other power whoch is that he can create an opposite of a character who loves them and he then unleashes them on the opponent. Great for getaways. Because of the limitations he faces Carlos is a team player knowing he needs the otherts to help him.

Calm Anger is a mood manipulator.   His powers seem to be used to calm people into temporary catatonic states, or increasing their frustration into blind wrath to where they attack even their most trusted friends and loved ones.  He was a former psychologist with an ethics problem. The way he considers his role is not as a villain., but as a mere aloof scientist studying his subjects.

Hated Love  is the group's female.  She suffers from multiple personalities, which have different power sets interestingly enough.  As Love she uses enhanced pheromones directed towards her male enemies and seduces them into a hypnotic state.  While no one knows exactly what causes her personality to shift, it often happens (though not always) just after her pheromone usage.  To which, Hate becomes dominant, and gives the hapless hero a rude awkening with a super sonic kick between the legs.

Some have theorized the former psychologist  Calm Anger is responsible for what she is.  Though he denies, and no direct evidence has justified this theory, as of yet.

Connections to the Culinary Institute of Assassins, perhaps?

Hi no Gaki (Hungry Ghost of Fire)

In Japanese folklore, a gaki (hungry ghost) is formed when a person dies with an overwhelming desire for something.  The ghost seeks out this substance to consume it, but can never be filled.  The Hi no Gaki was once a Japanese peasant living in the mountains of Hokkaido; he got lost in a blizzard and froze to death only a few yards from a hut where a jolly party was gathered around a warm fire.  It no longer remembers his name or details of his life, but constantly seeks out fire and heat to devour them.

It was a frequent hazard to travelers in that area until a Japanese mystic tracked it down and managed to seal it in a thermos bottle.  He intended to lay the ghost to rest, but the thermos and several other items were stolen and sold on the black market.  It bounced from owner to owner until it fell into the hands of the Gourmand who figured out how to open the seal without permanently breaking it.  Now it is bound to fulfill the thermos owner's commands...to an extent.

Hi no Gaki appears to be an emaciated Japanese man with a swollen belly and blueish skin, clad only in a dirty loincloth.  When moving about, its feet disappear and it appears to be floating.  It can open its mouth as wide as necessary to consume a flame, but this is a "special effect" only.  It is healed by flame and heat, but takes double damage from ice and cold.  It cannot be harmed by normal weapons, but any religious magic affects it.  While it will generally follow instructions, Hi no Gaki has no tactical sense.  It will proceed directly towards open flame or the largest heat source in the area that its master has not specifically told it not to eat.  Body heat will do in a pinch, and if left alone in a closed space, it will consume the ambient room temperature.

When not in use, it is usually kept sealed up in the thermos to prevent accidents.
