The SCP Foundation: To Secure, To Contain, To Protect

So, I haven't been able to come up with anything good for the Creepy Hotel thread. It's not that there isn't creepy stuff out there, just that not everything is creepy in the right way for the Hotel.

Fortunately, Karmakaze came through for me... sort of. On Tuesday, she sent me a link to the SCP Foundation wiki, sort of a spiritual successor to SJ Games' Warehouse 23 Basement (since Warehouse 23 itself is their online store, they moved the unsellable boxes to the basement some time ago). It's also something of a forerunner to the Syfy show Warehouse 13 (which isn't bad, as far as Syfy shows go -- it's almost science fiction!)

However, of all of those, the guys who edit the SCP wiki do a great job of being creepier than the rest, although they could do with more aggressive pruning. The ruthlessness of the Overseers (D-class personnel for the win!), the slightly "off" nature of most of the items, it all adds up to a creepfest. I like the way they do "historical" bits -- like everything you "know" has a kernel of truth to it but is ultimately wrong.

Anyway, it brings me to mind the idea to run a Warehouse-style campaign. How would you do it? It seems to me an "artifact-of-the-week" game would get old fast. So, do you need to plan all artifacts carefully so you can build stories from their interactions?

Re: The SCP Foundation: To Secure, To Contain, To Protect

There's a lot of inspired bits in there. Some are readily extractable to Hero format.

SCP-580, Shi Huang Ti's Five Heavens Chariot

"SCP–580 is a silk and wood zeppelin ostensibly constructed during the reign of Shi Huang Ti in China. The flight component has a dragon and phoenix painted in bright green, silver and gold on its side, while the deck seems to be made out of an unidentified hardwood. The deck itself has no visible weapons, although 8 cannon slots have been identified on both sides... The SCP is crewed with approximately 40 terra-cotta warriors, similar to those found in Shi Huang Ti’s tomb and the Terra Cotta army of lore. Each one is a mechanical golem that has shown skill with various ancient Chinese martial arts weapons and unarmed combat... The SCP can be found once one passes the moon; previous encounters show that the crew of the SCP consider the moon as the boundary of “Imperial territory” and do not venture past that point towards Earth. So far, rough calculations show that one may encounter the SCP in the area between the moon and the sun; based on anecdotal evidence, it appears that the SCP was commissioned to journey to the sun under orders of Shi Huang Ti. Whether it was for a military expedition or a petitioner’s journey remains unclear so far."

I also made the Terra Cotta Warriors, who may be downloaded here. From indications in the entry, they seem to be fairly tough even versus modern threats, and I've statted them accordingly. They have been armed with typical weaponry for which they pay points. Rather than give them a Martial Art, I gave them a couple of All Combat levels and left it at that, but you could replace those with a Martial Art fairly easily; I recommend Kung Fu (naturally).

SCP-148, The Telekill Alloy

"SCP-148 is a metallic substance, composed of a variety of known and unknown elements... SCP-148 has a grey-white color with a green tinge. SCP-148 has a melting transition point of approximately 4500°C and a boiling transition point of approximately 9000°C. SCP-148 has a density of 9.78 g/cm³ and qualifies as HRC 39 in a Rockwell hardness test. It exhibits material properties, such as strength, ductility, and workability, similar to stainless steel... Among the constituent elements currently identified are carbon, iron, gallium, hafnium, lead, platinum, iridium, silicon, and titanium, collectively composing 80% of SCP-148's mass. However, there are other substances not detectable by mass spectrometry or other means, given the mass of the material. SCP-148 has shown to be able to block or otherwise hinder all known extrasensory and telepathic abilities of the subject it encapsulates, with effectiveness depending on thickness."

So, this one is pretty easy to stat, and is probably something most such games would need. There's no point to forming a group dedicated to containing psionic creatures and people if one has no defense against said powers. It's probably best to treat it as a regular metal for all purposes (6E2 173) except that it also provides Mental Defense equal to PD. It's probably best to assume that, since it provides Mental Defense, it also provides protection against Teleportation and Clairsentience with a Psionic special effect.

Re: The SCP Foundation: To Secure, To Contain, To Protect

Anyway' date=' it brings me to mind the idea to run a Warehouse-style campaign. How would you do it? It seems to me an "artifact-of-the-week" game would get old fast. So, do you need to plan all artifacts carefully so you can build stories from their interactions?[/quote']

IMO one of the better places to start would be to devise an arc or pattern into which some of these artifacts fit, leading to something Big. Not all of them, mind you; that would become too predictable after a while, and make the players feel railroaded, not to mention making the GM work harder to fit them all together. ;) But there should some connection to the artifacts that the players can start to perceive, leading to the realization of a much larger situation they have to deal with. Perhaps the artifacts have the same cultural source, or are connected to an ancient prophecy, or are pieces of a map, weapon, or something else assemblable. In such a situation it's almost obligatory to have a rival group or groups trying to acquire the artifacts for their own nefarious purposes, that the PCs butt heads with from time to time.

Over and above including artifacts that aren't part of the pattern, the nature of the adventures should be changed on occasion. Not all the artifacts need be evil or destructive; some may be benevolent, and even necessary to acquire as a defense or counter to the Big Bad Thing that's coming. Some adventures may eschew acquiring objects -- the point could be to get them to the place or into the hands of the person where they belong or will do the most good. Adventures may also occasionally involve monsters, or people with extraordinary abilities -- perhaps an artifact was keeping a demon imprisoned, or surpressing someone's otherwise-uncontrollable powers.

Finally, just because an artifact has been put into the "warehouse" doesn't take it out of the game. Something archived many years ago may be the key to stopping a present-day menace. Someone might attempt a theft or assault on the warehouse to acquire or regain a key item. Or perhaps something destructive and deadly confined within an artifact has slipped its bonds and is trying to escape the warehouse, or destroy it.

IMO one of the better places to start would be to devise an arc or pattern into which some of these artifacts fit' date=' leading to something Big.[/quote']I agree. I think this is, in fact, the key to this kind of campaign. You don't necessarily need to have half-a-dozen great ideas. But you need one great "Wow!" idea that you think will work for the main arc. In the attached wiki, the main contributors seem to have arrowed in on a sort of "reality storm;" it's fairly metaphysical and mystical.

Over and above including artifacts that aren't part of the pattern' date=' the nature of the adventures should be changed on occasion. Adventures may also occasionally involve monsters, or people with extraordinary abilities -- perhaps an artifact was keeping a demon imprisoned, or surpressing someone's otherwise-uncontrollable powers.[/quote']Or, as in the attached wiki, "artifact" might include people, monsters, or locations associated with or capable of preternatural effects.

Finally' date=' just because an artifact has been put into the "warehouse" doesn't take it out of the game.[/quote']Absolutely. I'm just getting to parts of the SCP wiki dealing with something called the Theli Incident which involves the conflux of a number of differently-contributed artifacts. Good stuff, if a little high-handedly metaphysical for my current tastes. Still solid fiction.

Re: The SCP Foundation: To Secure, To Contain, To Protect

Two more.

SCP-151, The Painting

"SCP-151 is a 1 m x 1.3 m (3 ft x 4 ft) oil painting, apparently from the perspective of someone underwater. A subject who views the painting exhibits no initial effects. However, over a period of 24 hours, the subject's breathing becomes increasingly labored, culminating in the death of the subject. Autopsies reveal that subjects' lungs have filled with seawater. Attempts to halt the drowning process by medical intervention have proven successful in prolonging the life of the subject, but have not stopped or reversed the condition."

15 SCP-151, The Painting: Change Environment (Suffocation), Persistent (+1/4), Inherent (+1/4), Reduced Endurance (0 END; +1/2), Uncontrolled (+1/2), Area Of Effect Accurate (1m Radius; +1/2), LOS (+1/2), Trigger (Activating the Trigger is an Action that takes no time, Trigger resets automatically, immediately after it activates; viewing the painting; +1) (90 Active Points); Extra Time (23 Hours, -3 1/2), OAF Bulky (oil painting; -1 1/2) END=0

SCP-668, 13" Chef's Knife

"SCP 668 is a 33cm (13in) chef's knife with a rosewood handle and full-tang construction, crafted at some point in the early 1940s to late 1930s... The first recorded appearance of SCP-668 was in the 1940s, during the infamous [DATA EXPUNGED] case. [DATA EXPUNGED], a New York woman living alone, was allegedly raped and murdered by subject [DATA EXPUNGED]. Despite the fact that 38 witnesses reported hearing the attack, none of them attempted to aid the young woman for over six hours, until her eventual death. Whether the item recieved its properties due to this event, or whether it had them beforehand, is a matter of debate (see Dr. [REDACTED]'s paper re: the Bystander Effect, vs. Dr. [REDACTED]'s theory regarding psychic imprintation...) When carried by a human or humanoid entity with violent intent towards another human or humanoid entity, SCP-668 broadcasts a psychic signal that renders all sentient beings with a Psionic Resistance Index of 97 or lower incapable of assisting the victim. Affected entities report a sudden sense of apathy while under SCP-668's influence: sensory input is not affected, and affected entities report feeling revulsion and horror, but are simply inacapable of acting, even indirectly, to assist the victim. Meanwhile, it renders the victim incapable of defending themselves against their attacker."

342 SCP-668, 13" Chef's Knife: (Total: 1022 Active Cost, 342 Real Cost) HKA 1/2d6 (1d6 w/STR), Reduced Endurance (0 END; +1/2) (15 Active Points); OAF (-1), Real Weapon (-1/4), STR Minimum 5 (-1/4), Required Hands One-Handed (-0) plus Mind Control 25d6 (standard effect: 75 points) (Human and Animal classes of minds), Area Of Effect (1m Radius; +1/4), Invisible Power Effects (Invisible to Mental Group; +1/4), Telepathic (+1/4), Affects Desolidified (+1/2), Constant (+1/2), Reduced Endurance (0 END; +1/2), Uncontrolled (+1/2), MegaScale (1m = 1 trillion km; +4) (1007 Active Points); OAF (-1), No Range (-1/2), Single Command ("Do nothing, either directly or indirectly, to interfere with the actions of the bearer of the blade."; -1/2), Only When Bearer Is A Human Or Humanoid Entity With Violent Intent Towards Another Human Or Humanoid Entity (-0) END=0

Re: The SCP Foundation: To Secure, To Contain, To Protect

SCP-154, Offensive Bracelets

"SCP-154 is a pair of simple bronze bracelets, completely circular and large enough to comfortably hang off the arm of most people... When both bracelets are worn on the same arm, and the wearer concentrates on them with arms extended in a depiction of a traditional 'nocked bowstring' pose (achieved by having the arm with the bracelets completely extended in front of oneself, with the opposing arm extended up to the elbow of the fully extended arm), a large, indistinct, incorporeal bow will form in the extended hand, and both bracelets will glow lightly. From that point onwards, SCP-154 can be treated as a bow, until the pose or concentration is broken, which results in the bracelets reverting to normal. There is no actual bowstring, but completing the motion of pulling it achieves the same effect. When the 'bowstring' is pulled and released, the bones of the arm will be forcible ejected from the extended limb, traveling in a straight path at speeds recorded over three hundred meters per second. The missing bones and resulting damage to the arm are quickly regenerated, and the weapon is capable of being 'fired' again within minutes."

52 SCP-154, Offensive Bracelets: RKA 2d6+1, Reduced Endurance (0 END; +1/2) (52 Active Points); Extra Time (5 Minutes, bones regrow over time between shots; -2), 1 Recoverable Charge (-1 1/4), Gestures (Requires both hands; pulling and releasing motions; -1/2), Beam (-1/4), IIF (two bronze bracelets; -1/4), Side Effects, occurs automatically (predefined amount of damage [6 BODY to Arm]; see text; -0) END=0

SCP-133, Instant Hole

"SCP-133 appears to be an unmarked shipping crate, unremarkable in every way. Contained within, however, are several hundred (613 total, as of 28.02.2008, 14:47) rectangles of a waxy, paperlike material, folded in half, which, if unfolded, bear a black dot 5 cm in diameter. If the backing is placed against a solid surface, printed side down, and rubbed, the black dot will transfer to that surface, creating a permanent hole. Tests indicate SCP-133 is capable of penetrating 61 cm (24 in) of structural grade titanium, but smooth or highly dense materials reduce its ability to penetrate. When applied to flesh, the results are devastating."

38 SCP-133, Instant Hole: Multipower, 135-point reserve, all slots OAF Fragile (-1 1/4), 613 Charges which Never Recover (-1/2), Extra Time (Full Phase, -1/2), Gestures (rubbing the dot; -1/4)

1f 1) Used On Inanimate Objects: Tunneling 1m through 20 PD material; OAF Fragile (-1 1/4), Instant (-1/2), Extra Time (Full Phase, -1/2), Gestures (rubbing the dot; -1/4), Leaves A Trail (-0)

4f 2) Used On Animate Objects: HKA 3d6, Attack Versus Alternate Defense (Dimension Manipulation Powers or amorphous form; All Or Nothing; +1), Does BODY (+1); OAF Fragile (-1 1/4), No STR Bonus (-1/2), Extra Time (Full Phase, -1/2), No Knockback (-1/4), Gestures (rubbing the dot; -1/4)

SCP-185, The Radio

"SCP-185 appears to be a Russian R-105M radio used during the Cold War, except that it has a crudely added keypad and LCD screen. The object can receive most radio transmissions, including encrypted signals. Attempts to determine how it can break even the strongest of encryption have so far been fruitless. SCP-185 also has a very long range, surpassing even modern radio equipment. It functions as a normal radio until input is added via the keypad. It seems that if a year is entered into the keypad, the radio will receive transmissions from the era (depending on if messages were being broadcast on the set frequency)."

51 SCP-185, The Radio: (Total: 195 Active Cost, 51 Real Cost) HRRP (Radio Group), MegaScale (1m = 1 trillion km; +4) (60 Active Points); OAF Fragile (-1 1/4), Sense Affected As Radio And Hearing Groups (-1/2), Requires A Roll (Systems Operation Skill roll; -1/2), Extra Time (Full Phase, Only to Activate, -1/4) (Real Cost: 17) plus Retrocognitive, Precognitive Clairsentience (Radio Group), Reduced Endurance (0 END; +1/2) (90 Active Points); OAF Fragile (-1 1/4), Sense Affected As Radio And Hearing Groups (-1/2), Time Modifiers (-1/2), Gestures (entering date on keypad; -1/4), Extra Time (Full Phase, Only to Activate, -1/4) (Real Cost: 24) plus Cryptography 30- (45 Active Points); Only To Decrypt Radio Transmissions (-2), OAF Fragile (-1 1/4), Extra Time (Full Phase, Only to Activate, -1/4) (Real Cost: 10) END=0

SCP-098, Surgeon Crabs

"SCP-098 is a species of previously unknown crustacean. They resemble crabs, but instead of claws, they have small knife-like talons at the end of their front legs... They are able to breathe both water and air, splitting their time between the two environments. They also have a remarkable range of vocalizations. Most unusually for crustaceans, they use pack hunting tactics to take down prey larger than themselves. When they detect a prey animal, they will attempt to surround it, repeating its sounds to draw it into position. When they are in position, one will approach the prey. While the prey animal is focused on the first individual, others will move behind the prey and attempt to cut the tendons of its legs. They will continue mimicking it as they attack, which serves to disorient it. After making a cut, they spit a viscous mucus over the wound. This substance hardens rapidly and seals the wound, preventing blood loss. They will continue this until the prey is completely immobilized. At this point, they will begin to feed by cutting off small pieces of flesh from the prey animal. They only feed as long as the animal is still alive. It can take several hours or several days to finish, depending on the size of the prey animal and the number of specimens."

SCP-169, The Leviathan

"Because of its size, SCP-169 cannot and almost certainly will never be contained—no structure on Earth is large enough or strong enough to contain SCP-169. The location of SCP-169 is not precisely known, but imaging satellites and analyses of eccentricities in the Earth's orbit suggest SCP-169 is located in the southern Atlantic Ocean, possibly stretching around the tip of South America... Any satellite footage of a shift in the landmasses produced by SCP-169 is to be excised and destroyed... SCP-169 is surmised to be a marine arthropod of enormous size, known as the "Leviathan" by generations of sailors and oral history. Presumed at first to be a myth, SCP-169 was detected by Mobile Task Force Gamma-6 during an investigation of paranormal activity around the [south Sandwich] archipelago (coordinates [56°18'–59°27'S 26°23'–28°08'W]). During Gamma-6's investigation, [they] discovered the archipelago to have moved at least three (3) kilometers from its original location. Though initially [they] believed this motion to be due to unusually-quick continental drift, a reconnaissance mission revealed the archipelago to be the protrusions of rock-like plates covering an enormous organic mass. The Foundation was brought in immediately to begin threat management... [scientists] estimate SCP-169's body length to be between 2000 and 8000 km. The creature is thought to have existed since the pre-Cambrian era. No other specimens have been sighted. Almost nothing is known about SCP-169's habits, such as its reproductive capabilities (if any), food source, and nesting area (if any)... The archipelago known as the [south Sandwich] Islands have historically been uninhabited, though claimed by [britain] in 17[75]. Upon handover to the Foundation, [british] presence was evacuated on the pretense of rising sea levels. Though the archipelago has remained above sea level for several millennia, any change of depth by SCP-169 could result in the disappearance of the entire archipelago. SCP-169 moves slowly, less than one kilometer per week, but seems only to be adrift. Its method of propulsion is unknown. Regular seismic tremors seem to indicate "breathing" about every three (3) months, causing minor shifts in the islands' terrain, suggesting that the creature is probably dormant."

SCP-172, The Gearman

"SCP-172 appears to be a human being, 34 years of age... and of Russian descent. SCP-172's personality is very friendly and intelligent, if somewhat dull and repetitive. SCP-172 prefers dress from the 1860s, and always wears a large, ornate key on a long necklace. SCP-172 has never identified itself by any name, and is not upset by being referred to by its designation number. Internally, SCP-172 is a staggeringly complex automaton, possessing over two million moving parts, and eighteen million components at last count. Component parts appear to be made of glass, silk, wood, steel, brass, rubber, and several other substances. SCP-172 also has several “modules” that can be installed via a hatch in its chest. These appear to alter behavior, speech, movement, and several parameters based on position in the body cavity and module components. SCP-172 has 46 modules at current count, having built three of these while in Foundation custody. Currently, SCP-172 is loaded with the "engineer" module. Modules have been identified by SCP-172 as "caretaker", "soldier", "medic", "mother", and "king", though this is by no means a comprehensive list... SCP-172 is powered via a mainspring, which is wound with the key in SCP-172's possession, after inserting it into a hole at the base of the neck. SCP-172 can operate for eight hours on a single full “wind-up.” SCP-172 appears wholly human when in operation, and is capable of all basic human functions. SCP-172 has no need to eat, breathe, or sleep, but will perform all these functions if allowed to do so. SCP-172 is extremely obedient, and will follow any instructions given to it to the best of its ability. SCP-172 does not view its existence as strange, and asserts that it is human even when shown its internal components. SCP-172 is also extremely delicate, and great care must be taken to preserve and maintain its function."

EDIT - Fixed a few things, especially that pesky "delicate mechanism"/"clockwork robot" dichotomy.

SCP-035, Possessive Mask

"SCP-035 appears to be a white porcelain comedy mask, although at times, it will change to tragedy. In these events, all existing visual records, such as photographs, video footage, even illustrations, of SCP-035 automatically change to reflect its new appearance. A highly corrosive and degenerative viscous liquid constantly seeps from the eye and mouth holes of SCP-035. Anything coming into contact with this substance slowly decays over a period of time, depending on the material, until it has decayed completely into a pool of the original contaminant. Glass seems to react the slowest to the effects of the item, hence the construction choice of its immediate container... Subjects within 1.5 to 2 meters (5-6 feet) of SCP-035, or in visual contact with it, experience a strong urge to put it on. When SCP-035 is placed on the face of an individual, an alternate brain wave pattern from SCP-035 overlaps that of the original host, effectively snuffing it out and causing brain death to the subject. Subject then claims to be the consciousness contained within SCP-035... No effect is found to be had when placed on the face of an animal. Conversations with SCP-035 have proven to be informative. Researchers have learned various things about other SCP and about history in general, as SCP-035 claims to have been at many momentous events. SCP-035 displays a highly intelligent and charismatic personality, being both amiable and flattering to all those that speak with it. SCP-035 has scored in the hundredth percentile on all intelligence and aptitude tests administered to it, and appears to have a photographic memory. However, psychological analysis has discovered SCP-035 to possess a highly manipulative nature, capable of forcing sudden and profound changes to interviewer's psychological state. SCP-035 has proven to be highly sadistic, prompting some to suicide (see Interview 035) and transforming others into near-mindless servants with linguistic persuasion alone. SCP-035 has stated that it has intimate knowledge of the workings of the human mind and implied that it could change anyone's views if given enough time."

AI file for the mask can be found here. A mannequin animated by the mask is here; I didn't bother giving it a Complication for its limited lifespan since that should be whatever's dramatically appropriate and it's an NPC anyway. I enjoyed playing with the Possession power (APG 74) on this one -- I think it's not going to be the last time a Computer or AI is given this power in my games.

Re: The SCP Foundation: To Secure, To Contain, To Protect

SCP-275, Ironskin

"SCP-275 is a tanned woman of unknown race, although rough estimates would place a mixture of at least African, Eastern European, Middle Eastern, and Asian bloodlines in her ancestry, discerned from observation of her physical appearance... She speaks most dialects of the Middle East fluently, and speaks with a mild accent. SCP-275 is perfectly normal in the fact that she needs to breathe, eat, and sleep. However, subject is unique in the fact that she is almost completely resistant to extreme physical trauma, various forms of radiation, and extreme temperatures... Testing has deduced that the majority of SCP-275's mass is comprised of the elements common to all organic life. However, it is currently believed that many of the structural compounds have been replaced with significantly more durable substitutes, and the subject's tissues also appear to contain significantly elevated amounts of various heavy metals... Attempts have been made to X-ray or scan the subject, but results were poor to say the least. Subject's skin contains significant quantities of radio-opaque elements, repelling most attempts penetrate it with radiological or electromagnetic means... This "impenetrability" of the subject extends through the entirety of the subject, including her hair and nails. The hair of the subject is so resilient that a single strand can be used as an extremely sharp cutting wire, with the capability to slice through steel and even titanium... In addition to this, due to her physical makeup and density, her biology has been slowed as well. Subject ages at least a fourth of the normal rate of aging... One of the more worrying things about SCP-275 is her mental state. Whether it is a hormonal imbalance brought about by her unique physiology, psychological problems from childhood, or simply a result of being immune to most punishments others would fear, subject suffers from severe anger management issues, dealing with most major problems with irrationality and violence... She had been noted several times around the Persian Gulf, even coming into contact with rogue agent Bijhan at one point. Apparently, she had been using her invulnerability to weapons fire to her advantage, renting out her abilities to the highest bidder when she had been eventually found and captured by the Foundation. Subject claims to have been born in Iraq during the decline of the Ottoman Empire, and by the time major hostilities had broken out, her abilities had manifested themselves, allowing her a role outside of the traditional one that was expected of women at that time."

Character file can be found here. This one would be an interesting challenge for a gun-happy Dark Champions crew to try to apprehend. Since there's no indication of specific skill sets in the description, that part of the character has been left mostly empty; with an appropriately Espionage- or Terrorist-oriented skill set, this could be the Main Mook of the campaign -- she's not devious enough or driven enough to become a leader-type, but serves extremely well as hired muscle.

Re: The SCP Foundation: To Secure, To Contain, To Protect

Eh, I'm not feeling it today. Maybe a little one?

SCP-346, 'Pterry' the Pterodactyl

"SCP-346 is a small member of an unidentified family of pterodactyl - ancient flying reptiles. SCP-346 is approximately the size of a small bat, and has very lightweight bone structure. Although its head, wings, and legs are bare, its main body is covered with a soft coat of fur-like, dark colored down. The origin of SCP-346 is unknown, and was purchased [in] a small pet shop in Brazil, being marketed under the name "Kongo-mato". The owner of the pet store claims not to know where SCP-346 came from, having purchased a set of eggs off the black market (of which only one, SCP-346, hatched) believing them to be from a rare species of parrot. Some theories suggest that there may be a large colony of creatures similar to SCP-346 somewhere in South America. Testing has revealed that SCP-346 is a adult, but appears to have had its growth somewhat stunted by malnutrition and being raised in a small, cramped cage. SCP-346 is also a male, and has been nicknamed by staff who find the little creature's appearance charming as "Pterry". SCP-346 behaves in a manner similar to birds and bats, being most active at dawn and dusk, and energetically flying in whatever space it's given, snapping up insects either out of the air or off the ground and branches. SCP-346 chirps and squeaks in a manner similar to birds and rodents, and is most vocal during the evening hours. Some describe this as endearing, others as annoying."
