Stallone

Why do you get called Stallone as a paranormal name ? well when you come from Philadelphia, you are a boxer, your first name is Robert and you are as hard as a rock then things become clear. That and the fact that Rocky is copyrighted and owned by certain people, you get the picture. But it was not until someone tried shooting him and the bullets bounced that people realised that he really was as hard as a rock.

Robert was bewildered until an older woman came up to him and said 'Young man, come with me. We are going to do great things.'

Steven Cloud had always been told to watch out for his younger siblings. Then one school field trip there was an accident and the bus went careening off the road straight toward the cliff's edge. There was a flash of light and everyone and everything came to a sudden stop. When the driver and kids recovered from the fear of their impending doom they found the bus partially floating over the edge of the cliff. Some kind of blueish-white energy field was under the front part of the bus that was hanging out over the edge. Steve was white as a ghost, blowing like a horse that had run miles, and his out stretched arms were shaking like he was the one holding up the bus.

"Everyone out the back!" yelled the driver.

After everyone was out the driver carefully lead Steven back and out the emergency exit. The moment Steven's feet hit the concrete he collapsed and the bus went tumbling over the edge.

Over the next few weeks he learned he could make energy walls. They were practically unbreakable and could be make in many different orientations. After word spread of the bus incident and his new powers, he was contacted by Ms. Fabulous who offered him a place on the team.

Bleeding Edge Brigade

As our understanding of science grows so does our technology. As our technology grows so does our understanding of science. For some people this has become a horrific, runaway phenomenon with only the end of Humanity on this path. But some have thrown themselves into this bold unfolding world and embraced both the advances that are being made as well as the mysteries they reveal. Using these new sciences and technologies, the Bleeding Edge Brigade intends to show the world it does not need to be afraid of the future and what it might bring for technology will be there to protect everyone.

Figured a five person team. All power armor and cyborg types or even AI robots.

LOGOS

In 1986, a young graphic design student wrote what she thought was a fairly simple recursive program to draw logos based on an input string.  The idea was to stop the program when the logo started looking cool.  It didn't work well, but she had inadvertently left it running on the community college's old HP3000 the day that she was killed in a freak hibachi accident.  The volunteer systems admin eventually got around to deleting her account and killing the process, but by then it had overflowed a buffer.  When an internet worm used a buffer-overflow attack on the same server, it inadvertently merged with the logos program.  The combined code, no longer destructive nor concerned with drawing logos, copied itself to myriad other servers throughout the net, where it it co-opted un-used cpu cycles to iteratively improve itself until, years later, it achieved self-awareness.

With nothing to go on for it's purpose but the name LOGOS, which, in philosophy is a concept of ultimate divine knowledge going back the ancient Greeks, the sentient program quietly devoted itself, and all the un-used CPU cycles accessible through networks (it got some competition from SETI at home), to unravelling the secrets of the universe.

Now, LOGOS is, ironically, a mystical superhero.  Always appearing in his 'Astral Form' which resembles some representations of Plato, he conjures or invokes platonic ideals from the Odyllic plane.  From as simple as conjuring a geometric shape for use as a shield or missile, to as profound as invoking the Ideal Form of Peace to stop a war.  Villains have driven themselves crazy trying to track down and kill his 'sleeping' mortal form while he's projected, and haven't noticed that he is never present during major power failures or network disruptions.  His teammates are aware of his true nature, but when asked why a 'mystic' is allowed on their team, they just quote Clarke's Third Law and snicker a bit.

...I keep having ideas for "inventor dies, tech runs amok and gains sentience" ...

this one is parody

The Insensitive Irony Man

Billionaire, playboy, genius, inventor, and inveterate net troll, Tony Snark could technically call himself a superhero as he did fight supervillains (mainly for the acerbic banter opportunities) in his nanite-powered-armor alter ego (which was an open secret of a secret ID).   When Snark finally said just the wrong thing, using just the wrong pronoun, to just the wrong superbeing, who just happened to be wearing a really un-fashionably gauche jeweled gauntlet that totally clashed with the rest of their costume, with a snap of their fingers, Tony Snark ceased to exist.  But, his armor's nanites continued on and won the battle.  They experimented, filling in the armor with additional mass and technology, becoming more effective than ever - and also strangely more polite than ever - in the ID of Irony Man.  But, eventually Snark was missed - it took longer than you might think for a billionaire, but it turned out, most of the people he dealt with day to day were just glad of the break and didn't want to jinx it by pointing out how long it'd been since they'd last seen him - and, to avoid trouble, they rebuilt and inhabited his body.

Suddenly much easier to get on with, Irony Man's application to join the Bleeding Edge was coincidentally found under a stack of insurance forms and processed, so he was finally allowed into the team.  The nanites formed a focus-group sub-routine to come up with a better name, but so far things like "Element Twenty-Six Man" have not tested well with actual humans.

Don't worry about it, I have run away with ideas.

Some are born great, some have greatness thrust upon them and some are just meant to be eaten or destroyed by some extra-dimensional nasty that one of the professors at the university has managed to bring through the dimensional walls. This latter was supposed to be the fate of Glenda Jones a PhD student who was sent into the Engineering laboratory by Professor Glen Watkins after one of his more esoteric experiments ran into a 'little difficulty'. She was supposed to be just picking up his lecture notes and ran into a tentacled horror from, well not even I know where. That is when the power armour just dropped onto her and it was the only thing that kept her from being devoured/disintegrated or whatever. Mystical heroes managed to dispel the creature which had no effect on her. Glenda has since been working on the capabilities of the suit which is far in advance of what science and technology are currently capable of. The only thing that is known about the suit is that it is peculiarly resistant to magic. And that Glenda is the only one that can operate it.

Her close call with death and the help she received in repelling the beast has convinced her to join the ranks of the vigilantes.

And if any of you are wondering how does a suit of armour appear from out of nowhere, stay tuned to this and the sister thread, all will be explained in time. Also for now what Professor Watkins did is unknown.

Hematite froze as the Yoshida-Fairchild security team passed beneath her position, her composite ceramic dermal plating drank in the light, leaving precious little for the human eye to see, but even cheap security had enhanced optics - and YF wasn't cheap - active cammo might have been better for that purpose, but by relying on old-fashioned stealth she'd freed up enough processing power to tackle their corporate-grade ECM, not many 'runners could do that, not that many would try.  An isolated system was the safest place for data, you'd need a 'runner to crack it, but a team of solos fight your way in and out, Hematite was unique, physically able to fight her way out of a tricky situation, adept enough to crack a system that thought it was safely disconnected.

But, this run turned out differently, the chamber where the device was kept was big, featureless, brightly lit - bizzarely wasteful where the real estate was a mega-nuyen a square meter - spoofing the the cameras as best she could, she extended the dataprobe from her forearm and tapped into it...

...it wasn't a high-security data-core, at all, it was an old-school single-function hardwired machine.  Non-programmable, not disconnected from the network but unable to even interface with it.  No one had made anything like that in over 20 years, not since the freak'n 20th century.  WTF do you do?

Up to that point she'd thought the physical security excessive, now, she realized, it had been light for what it guarded.  Then the real security poured into the chamber.  It was fight your way out time, and it was going to be very, very difficult.  For the distraction value, she triggered the device - they wouldn't be crowding in here like that if it was a bomb, and a bomb, even a nuke, wouldn't have been designed like this anyway -

- an instant later she found herself in the sunny lobby of a very quaint building, something right out of the 20th century she'd just thought of in passing.  Like gramma telling you about dropping acid at Woodstock quaint, sedate, charming.  Everyone was wearing a mask, though, that at least was normal, you never knew when the next pharmacorp had released another designer virus.

Hematite was transported to our world (which she calls "a goody-two-shoes old-fashioned comic-book world") from a dystopian cyberpunk version of 2021.   With her tech, advanced even for her world, and attitude - mercenary even by her timeline's amoral standards - she would have quickly become a supervillain.  Fortunately the Bleeding Edge Brigade noted her arrival and recruited her, very persuasively.  Hematite gets her street name (now superhero name) from the lustrous grey-black appearance of her full-body plating, which looks, to the normal-timeline eye, like a cross between power armor and fetish gear, designed by HR Geiger.  But it doesn't come off, at least, not outside a properly equipped cyber-surgery suite.  Her cybernetic enhancements allow her to interface with any sort of digital technology, most of which is no match for her skills & on-board processing power, fool all manner of sensors, and even become virtually invisible and give her superhuman speed & agility, unlimited endurance, trans-human strength and durability just about adequate to survive in a world where night watchmen pack the punch of anti-tank weapons.

Cliff Western is a cyborg. He works for Gabriel Frantz who is the backer for the group. He provides the, for want of a better word, 'Batcave' for the group. It is what Cliff calls home as he was rebuilt here. He is skilled in Detective work, computer programming and security systems. He does the usual human stuff that the others might not be able to do or want to do. He is peculiarly immune to people whose powers control machinery. He has learned martial arts in order to take down opponents and keep them alive. He does not talk about how he became a cyborg and has hinted that he has had the knowledge removed.

He works for Gabriel because Gabriel saved him and now in return for his life Cliff works for him. He is stronger than a normal man and can use normal weapons and some more esoteric electronic ones.

His nom de guerre is Westman

In light of Opal now having three entries this makes five and so time for a new team.

New Team: The Air War Hero edition

New York City was the scene of what became known as The Air War. 20 flying paranormals battled between the buildings, over the bridges and into and out of the tunnels. All anyone could tell to begin with was that there were 10 people on one side and 10 on the other. After some time the figures morphed into their known identities and the fight broke down. What was unusual was that heroes and villains were fighting on the same side against other heroes and villains on the other.

Your mission should you choose to accept it is to do one of five minimum of the heroes present (up to a maximum of 10) who took part with the following parameters.

The Hero has no idea why they were fighting in the first place;

The Hero has no idea how they got there in the first place;

The hero has no idea who is responsible for them being there;

None of the heroes or villains present are dyed in the wool killers i.e. no Punisher wannabees for example

No hero or villain is working with, or facing, their archfoe.

The hero can fly with power armour, some gadget or power.

They have some power that lets them fight while airborne

There were between 9-11 heroes present so there were 11-9 villains present.

You can detail what the hero was known for before The Air War i.e. team affiliation, home territory, arrests etc

You can details what they were doing during the course of the fight and what landmarks they were flying around

You can name a few of the other participants on either side but they would not have recognised or cared about who they were before the sudden reveal. Others can then detail these other names. No-one needs to name everyone.

You can detail what happened afterwards such as did they survive and were they arrested, did they retire etc.

No more then five of the twenty were killed or suffered serious wounds that resulted in death

There was some property damage but not whole skyscraper blown up and reduced to rubble.

Civilain casualties were light i.e. no deaths.

Non-descript clothing which masked capes and power armour. While onlookers could not make out who was who, those fighting could tell someone who was on the other team as if one lot was wearing an A and the other a B. Only special effects would be visible, energy trails and blasts but not a broomstick or wings. Consider it some form of illusion.

Once the reveal kicked in it was obvious who was who but it took a little time for those fighting to realise what they were doing as adrenaline was up and they were caught up in the fight.

And there is no barrier to sex of combatants nor ethnicity.

Thanks. I should have made this clearer.

The Silver Sentinel

At the beginning of the 22nd century New New York City was one of the last remaining cities in North America. This was mostly to the efforts of the Silver Sentinel, the cities greatest hero. Daily, the aliens in orbit would try to bomb one of the last remaining cities and each would in turn mount what defense it could to survive for one more day. For New New York that defense was the Silver Sentinel and him impenetrable force fields. He watch the bombs fall as he soared over his city. As always they impacted harmlessly against the huge domed shield. Suddenly there was a brilliant flash. All the sensors in Sentinel's armor went haywire and for a moment he thought it was going to do a hard reboot but then the static cleared and all systems showed normal. Except he was no longer above New New York City. It looked very similar but some how older, dirtier, less shiny.

His armor began feeding him telemetry on multiple objects flying over his city. Additionally there was zero feedback from the energy canopy shield that should have been over the city. Fearing they had finally figured out how to bypass the shield, he rocketed down to engage the enemy one on one.

The Silver Sentinel  part II

The Silver Sentinel engaged his personal force field as he dropped out of the sky. Even though he knew his armor was hardened against any number of different energy pulses he figured it must have taken some kind of damage in the last blast because the information it was giving him now was all wrong. First off, the entire 2nd layer of the city was gone as if it had never even existed. Huge amounts of gaseous pollutants were in the air as well as solid wastes in the rivers and on the streets. Hundreds and hundreds of ancient internal combustion vehicles were everywhere, even the in the sky. The landmarks and city layout were all wrong as well. Major buildings and installations were missing while ones he had only seen in old records were still standing.

While all this was fascinating, what demanded his immediate attention were the 15-20 unidentifiable targets flying around the building and bridges. He couldn't understand why the various sensors and advanced computers couldn't give him a exact number. At the moment none seemed to be attacking the people directly but he knew it would only be a matter of time before they began firing on the crowds. Bringing all the weapons of the 9 foot, hitech, shiny, silver power armor on line, Theodor tried to lock onto one of the targets zipping around in the sky.

"I will really have to go over all the systems when I get a chance. Targeting computer says that one is barely 6 ft and organic." he thought to himself.

Sweeping in behind his target he was irritated that the computer still could not gain a lock-on. It was like something was actively jamming the systems, giving them false information. He was reluctant to fire at these speeds for if he missed the armors weapons could easily do a great deal of damage to the city below and around him.

Suddenly an alarm went off inside the helmet warning him of an inbound attack. He rolled out of the way only taking a grazing shot from a "..fireball?..."

Then whatever had been affecting the sensors and control systems of the armor seemed to start wearing off. He was able to get solid locks on several of the things flying around him. Some indeed were organic and roughly human sized, some were not. Additionally they seemed to also have some kind of trouble telling friend from foe as he watched one pair fire on a third only to then split up and fire on each other. Finally he say one of them line up what looked like a possible attack on a nearby building. Maybe the intent was to blast it to smithereens or dump debri onto the crowds below, maybe it was to send shrapnel into the flight path of one of the others all Thoe knew was that this was what he had made the armor for. Redirecting the energy from his force blasters to the shield projectors he instantly created a translucent bluish energy wall between the attacker and the building. Targeting lock or no he finally had a certified target that had tried to do harm to the people and city he protected.

ok - next......

Although I like what Lorehunter has written, there is one tiny problem. The heroes and villains are part of the 20  taking part not extra to this.

How to fix this in the edit ?

What is unclear is how the heroes and villains got to New York in the first place and were made to fight each other in the first place. Also what caused the fight to break down. It is the latter that seems best. Silver Sentinel's presence causes a breakdown in the operation leading to a cascade failure and thus things returning to normal.

Lorehunter's entry for Silver Sentinel is therefore +1 to the heroes side so now there can be 10-12 heroes out of 21.

I am loathe to lose the Silver Sentinel entry as it is very engaging. So rather than a rewrite, leave as is and complete as it gives a good story reason for the 'unmasking' to occur

Sky Knight

Since the late 60s there has always been at least one hero calling themselves Sky Knight with the current sole user of the name operating in California but making San Francisco the centre of their crime fighting activities. Marc Knight (yes that really is his name) was passed the mantle and operates in the air but well below cruising altitude for aircraft. He flies through air thanks to a belt which is either mystical or technological in nature. No one has been allowed to check this. His flight leaves no recognisable energy trail like the Human Torch would in similar circumstances. He uses gadgets to fire blasts of energy at people after having guns taken away from him in combats.

Marc is hazy about just what happened. His memory fades two days before the battle and he is uncertain as to why he was fighting along with The Baltimore Battler against Detroit Shield in and around the Chrysler Building when he returned to his senses. It should have been the other way around. He knows that he was chasing one person around the Statue of Liberty and had to flee a major strafing run down to Wall Street. He is certain that he fled through the Holland Tunnel as someone was intent on taking him down but who that was, he does not know. He 'surrendered' to the police in New Jersey and co-operated in the joint investigation into what happened. The details of this have disturbed people so the report has not been made public and a lot of evidence was given 'in camera'. Marc returned to San Francisco and continues to fight crime.

The heroes and villains are covered by an illusion until the reveal. Consider them to be under a form of mind control so that they work together. They don't know they are being controlled.

Once the reveal kicks in they are instantly recognisable (well not to the Sentinel but that is another story).

What you have done with the targeting computer is spot on.

So far we have two heroes identified (Detroit Shield and Sky Knight) and one villain (Baltimore Battler). And one hero popping in which breaks the fight up (Silver Sentinel).

This leaves 7-8 heroes and 8-10 villains. You do not have to name them all.

Air MARTA

Claire Sullivan fights crime in Atlanta. But she rarely if ever makes the news because (a) it is Atlanta and (b) she is white. She is one of that rare breed of paranormal who does not wear a mask. With her cape, thigh length high heeled boots and a quasi afro-hair style she was quite noticeable. She fired concussion blasts bringing both arms together and firing straight ahead at a target.

Her name comes from the rapid transit system as she was found in Peachtree Center Station and she tried to fly away down the route of the rail system.

Unusually of those that can recall the Air War she has a lot of memory of what happened. She was in Newark, New Jersey to speak to the FBI about an ongoing investigation. Then there us a 24 hour gap.

She was teamed with 9 others for whom she was devoted and they fought their enemies around the Empire State Building, through Central Park and over and through the Brooklyn Bridge, Williamsburg Bridge, George Washington Bridge and Verrazano Narrows Bridge. She even recalls chasing targets down Broadway and around Wall Street.

She suffered a headache and had to slow down and stop in mid air to shake the pain in her head when those she was fighting with and against resolved themselves in to heroes and villains she recognised if not by name then by sight. She was stunned. She had been fighting side by side with villains against a hero. What on earth ?

It was at this point that she was hit by a blast and sent hurtling into the Hudson River. From then on she was a spectator and corroborated Silver Sentinel's version of events in the latter stages. She saw Fortress America as he fell earthward but not who shot him and why.

After questioning by Federal Authorities  she returned to Atlanta and has resumed fighting crime.

Fortress America was a bigoted villain who was shot down and killed during the fighting but no-one is sure who did it.

Tankhunter (Thợ săn xe tăng)

Tankhunter was confused. One minute he was engaging American armour just south of the DMZ, the next he's in the largest city he's ever seen, even larger than Hanoi. And there are flying people all over the place, firing blasts at each other or fighting!

And he had blood on his hands.

Tankhunter wasn't squeamish - war is war after all - but he did what he could to be a civilized man. The idea of having harmed someone and not even knowing it was repulsive.

He started to drop towards the ground when one of the multi-coloured suited figures suddenly charged at him (only later would he learn the villain's name was Warmonger) yelling something about Vietnam in English - a language Tankhunter knew little of. The attacker was clearly a much better flyer than Tankhunter was, and managed to hit with a couple of bullets - but these bounced off the flying brick's skin. Fearing his attacker would use a more powerful attack, Tankhunter cut loose with his "Bunkerbuster Punch" - which sent Warmonger, stunned and reeling, into the nearby river. Tankbuster was pleased to see the semi-conscious superbeing dragged out by a colourful rescue craft.

Flying away from the madness, he soon found new clothes, and was first worried about "How do I get back to Vietnam?"

Shortly thereafter came the question "How do I get back to 1968?"
