This was originally used to analyze the composition of samples, but he modified it so he can use it to change elements, identify samples, create simple devices out of thin air. He can convert his body to vapor and get through all but literally airtight barriers, and perceive his surroundings as he does so. Initially he used this to inspect structures (including ones compromised by impact damage or ground failure) and direct attention to points where reinforcement would do the most good, but got a higher visibility in the public eye for finding survivors trapped in collapsed and bombed buildings, mining accidents, and in urban ruins made by just-happened earthquakes. His ability breaks down into being able to fit all the pieces of a particular thing together so he can tell what happened to break the sample apart. A better question might be 'Who builds if for them ?'. One of those that do is Clayton Blackmore who builds all sorts of things for various people and agencies in their quest to combat crime. What few people know is that he is a hack. If he can get his hands on someone else's work then he can improve it and copy it. He also has a 'bible'. This comprises all sorts of tech and blueprints that mad scientists have developed, or tried to develop, over the years. The difference is that Clayton has some scruples. The name Dr Pioneer is a bit of a misnomer as he is using other people's work. A couple of his colleagues are aware that he is not an innovator as such but the fact that his 'inventions' have saved lives and that he is self effacing and has turned down highly paid jobs to stay with the team make him invaluable. The truth is more prosaic. If he was elsewhere then people might take a better look at his work and realise that he is a bit of a fraud. He tends to suffer from hyperbole. 'If we don't solve this problem in the next 5 minutes then the entire world is doomed !' is a famous quote of his that was memorably parodied as relating to a simple Chess problem. Most of the time he is fine but present him with something new and he tends to go off the rails, much to the delight of the press who are somewhat fed up of the taciturn attitude and reticence of some heroes. Most people are prepared to forgive his outbursts after his experimentation saved the lives of the nation's pets from Mr Snide's 'peticide' virus. His remembered quote is 'We will stop you in your tracks foul fiend, and make the world a safer place for bunny rabbits everywhere !' The fact that the virus was found to be on the point of mutating and attacking the human population with deadly affects particularly pre-teens did him, and the group, a lot of good. He tends to defer to the others with the exception of Dr Pioneer who he tends to be rather casual and close mouthed with, mostly saying 'Can you build this ?' or 'Is there a device that can do X ?' He looks a bit like a mad professor such as Dr Emmet Brown in Back to the Future. Other heroes tend to like him as he will often go off on epic speeches saying how good it is to have them around fighting the good fight along with firemen, the police and the medical service. He will downplay his own contribution and emphasise 'The Team' NT: The Sunshine Boys. I got the idea from Point Break. A bunch of heroes who only fight crime in the Summer months or when it is hot and sunny. Their critics have thus blasted them as 'The Sunshine Boys'. Minimum number 5, maximum 10. This master of temperature only acts on the hottest days, using his power to melt anything that poses as a threat. The reason for this is Heat Wave is sentient energy based around a charging stone in the City's government center. The Stone only charges when the temperature climbs above 80 degrees farenheit. The weak surface creatures actually call 120 degrees hot. Still Argyte finds he likes the surface, and when its warm enough the rocky hero emerges to help the Sunshise Boys with his great strength and magma balls.
