Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

"We didn't even know he was a superhuman," Sister Janice said, "he showed up every Wednesday to help out at the shelter for ten years. It wasn't until a new volunteer, a man of uhm...well advanced years, recognized him."

She shook her head. "He admitted it readily enough, he says he's over two hundred years old. Then Seven Lights were formed and he decided he should help on a grander scale. "

Samaritan (Generosity) needs nothing. He is seemingly immortal and immune to most environmental dangers. He doesn't eat or drink save for the enjoyment it brings and doesn't sleep, though he does enjoy a meditative "nap" now and again.

As a superhero, Samaritan wields his own life-force as a weapon. Beyond his exceptional defenses, he can enhance his physical attributes to superhuman levels, project beams of energy and seems capable of many forms of movement including flight and teleportation (he appears, superficially to be a Superman style brick). Finally, he can lend his lifeforce to others healing or strengthening them - this seems to cause him discomfort at the lower levels, pain when he exerts it over a large area or at it's most potent.

Samaritan still works tirelessly for others, when he's not acting the hero, he spends times at innumerable charities and shelters around the world. He is pleasant, but occasionally hints about learning his life lessons the hard way, and only truly gets angry at those who advance their causes by harming others...particularly those who steal/abuse charities.

[Patience: Pursuit of Peace]

Some people say that a pacifist superhero is an oxymoron, but Reciprocal would beg to differ. He has never attacked another person in his life. This young man is the center of an unusual effect that some scientists have called the "Reciprocity Field." Put simply, anyone within 10 meters of Reciprocal cannot be harmed by others, nor can anyone within 10 meters of him cause harm to others. Instead, damage from attacks either into, out of, or within the field are instantly directed back at the attacker. It's not that the attack bounces back -- it appears to hit the target, but rather than harming the target, it harms the attacker instead.

Reciprocal is a deeply religious young man and explains this as a miracle wrougth by God himself. Some have tried to explain this as a psychokinetic effect, but Reciprocal is quick to point out that it also works against invisible and surprise attacks -- so if he can't perceive it, how can he psychokinetically redirect the damage?

There are a few loopholes in the Reciprocity Field that opponents of the Seven Lights have learned to exploit. It only works against consciously targeted attacks, for instance, so damage from environmental dangers (fire, falling debris, etc.) is not redirected, though it will redirect someone's direct attacks against the environment. Also, it only works against actual STUN or BODY damage, not against other effects (such as mind control or Drains). At this point, it is not known if there is an upper limit to the amount of damage redirected by the Reciprocity Field.

Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

Many people find it amusing that the Seven Lights' representitive of Ethics is also the team's lawyer. But those that know Susan Murdock, aka Advocate, well can attest that she is one of the most ethical persons around. If she feels someone has been wronged and a cause is just, she will defend that individual or cause - even if doing so runs counter to the Seven Lights. (In two separate cases, she legally defended individuals that her teammates had defeated and captured.)

In addition to her legal skills, Advocate is a minor psychic. She has the innate ability to detect conscious lies and cause headaches (a small but highly Penetrating Mental Blast) in those telling the lies. She can turn the headache part off with effort, but will instead suffer the effects herself whenever someone tells a lie in her presence. Because of this, she tends not to hang around in large groups of people. She helps with the team's investigations but avoids most combats, as she is more a liability than an asset there.

New Team: The Farm Belt

This team is a loose-knit group of heroes from various Midwestern US states (Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, etc.) who occasionally get together to deal with regional threats. There are six members, all of whom have some sort of farming / farmer / crop motif.

Ken Clarkson doesn't know who his real parents are, but loves the Kansas couple who adopted him just the same. They've instilled in him a sense of decent, honest values and to respect his fellow humans. Meanwhile, he grew up to have super-strength and invulnerability and the ability to leap tall...silos or the equivalent sized buildings (no flight). He's actually taken on the name Silo. Miss Kansas of the Capital Contingent despises him because Ken a) didn't want to be involved with her romantically & B) refused to work solely for her daddy's corporate agribusiness.

And c) he's no strange visitor from another world, he's an android. Ken's parents found him in an abandoned root cellar. They're not sure who or what built him or for what purpose, but they've grown to love Ken as any flesh and blood human -- and they'll fight to make sure he's never used for evil means.

Amber Waves - Amber Kimberly Waves was always a head turner with a perky attitude. She was voted "Most upbeat" in her graduating High School class, and was winner of the Gootchatawny County Beauty Pageant three years running before getting a job as an airline stewardess Flight attendent. One flight, a group of terrorists threatened to destroy the plane with a chemical bomb. Bravely grabbing the 'bomb' and trying to save them all, Amber was surprised when instead of blowing up, it sprayed all over her, most particularly in her scalp. The terrorists were surprised to, it seemed, but were satisfied as the 'foolish woman' lay quivering. However, Amber's body adapted, and her blonde locks grew and took a life of their own becoming superstrong, flexible, and prehensile! Using her new "Hair powers" to tangle and trap the terrorists until the plane could safely land, Amber Waves was soon a legend in not one, not two, but THREE Counties! Her chances for a secret ID thus ruined forever, she was unsure what to do with these new powers until she saw other superheroes from the Farm Belt on TV (That local station?). Reminded of a patriotic song, she made herself a grain themed costume and now, Amber Waves takes her perky attitude, AND her perfect golden coif against any that would threaten hard working innocent Americans.

ok this is great...but I do have to bring up the fact that in a Night Court episode Harry dated an adult film star who's stage name was Amber Waves.

The Combine is the hero of the people. Literally, he appears to be a hero because the people of the midwest wanted a protector who represented the best of them. A loose energy wave when dormant, he takes on the strength, skills, and talents of those closest to his appearance when he becomes active.

Agrarian - Thomas Wilson has a green thumb...hand, arm, body. He's not entirely certain, but he believes he's been chosen by America itself to represent the heartland. He has traditional fantasy druid powers - plant control, growth, communication and animation. He can also assume the forms of a working breed dog, a bull, great hawk, and a small rodent.

He's had interesting dreams telling him of a destiny, but he also remembers volunteering for an unusual project when studying at the university of Kansas.

Catfish. He appears from the rivers and thwarts the villains. So if you are away from the rivers the water bound hero who looks like a man sized catfish can't get you can he ? Wrong !

Catfish has appeared with the other members of the Farm Belt, away from the nearest water source but these events tend to be few and far between.

Catfish has what appears to be a tattoo of a Combine Harvester on his stomach. He has water powers but some enhanced strength. He also appears near fish farms that are being raided, poached or are in danger of pollution. But he also has got after 'them damn furrin carp' in the rivers.

Also renowned for his battle cry of 'For John Deere and Liberty !'

Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

Vicky Torvaldsen grew up in Odin, Minnesota. She always had a ...special relationship with micro-organisms, being able to see, communicate with and to a certain extent control them. For most of her young life, she pretended to not notice this, as it had caused her no end of teasing from other kids who either didn't believe her or thought her power was "gross." But eventually she wound up going to a "farm" college (because her folks wouldn't spring the money for the big city school) and fell under the tutelage of a professor who showed her how important microbes are to agriculture and the process of fermentation. Moreover, she now had friends who envied or appreciated her powers and could think of new and interesting ways to exploit them.

Upon graduation, Vicky got a day job as a consultant to the beer industry in Minnesota, traveling from small brewery to large distiller to help them make a better product. But she also helps out the Farm Belt as the Brewer, mistress of microbiology. Essentially, any effect that can be created through manipulation micro-organisms (except killing them) is within her power, even causing effects that would normally take years in a single day. While she can't kill disease germs, she can make them "sleep" which can help immensely.

And by now she just shrugs off the jokes that with that name she should be from Milwaukee.

New Theme: "Project Beta" - An evil geneticist (Teleios perhaps if you use the standard CU) took it upon himself to clone various scattered heroes of past and present in the attempt to utilize those abilities and powers for his own ends. Before the process could be finished, he was foiled, and the clones gained free will and found themselves in a world where the niches they would have had already been filled. Some might try to make contact with friends or family of those they were copied from, others may seek to forge their own identies, but the clones have formed a team chiefly because, for now, they have no where else to turn to, and fighting crime is all they really have left.

"You look familiar."

"I get that a lot," said the waitress, smiling wearily.

"Yeah, you look just like that singer...what was her name again, my teenage boy is crazy for her...oh yeah, Sapphire!"

The waitress winced a bit. "What a coincidence. Sometimes I wish I actually could be a famous singer and superhero. But if wishes were horses, beggars would ride."

"You have a nice voice. You ever try singing for a living?"

"Long ago." The waitress looked a bit sad. "Things went sour. Hey, you want a refresh on that coffee?"

"Maria Smith" remembers being Sapphire, riding the wave of fame, fighting against evil and injustice--and being knocked out in a fierce battle. She came to in a cloning vat three years later, naked and without the scar she'd gotten on her hip the time she'd gotten too close to one of Mechanon's missiles. There were other clones there, and they banded together to escape. She'd wanted to resume her old life...but there was already a Sapphire, presumably the original since she was still working just fine with the other Champions.

Some friendly contacts who could keep a secret and forged papers later, Maria Smith was taking orders in a greasy spoon far from Millenium City. She still fights crime with Beta Project, under the codename Bluestone. She dreads the day she'll inevitably have to face her original, especially as Maria Smith really hates the musical direction Sapphire's taken recently.

Miss Mystique II: Miss Mystique is straight out of the 1940s. Dress, style, 2-fisted justice, and seductive. The only problem is that when her original self died, the original turned into a ghost that still fights crime, and has been since the 1940s. She hasn't confronted her other self yet, and stays out of that city until she is sure that original Miss Mystique is ready for such a confrontation.

BTW: Miss Mystique (the "original") really is a player's character that is in one of my games. It was too good to pass up. Who knows, I may just use this idea.

Ron just wants some quiet time in a lab, maybe a nice walk in the park. It's irritating how humans run and scream when they see him. So what if he has four arms, and a fin on top of his head.

At least no one has called the army on him yet.

Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

Harkening back to the first page of this thread...

The last word Gregory Jones remembered hearing before his long sleep was a shouted "Medic!" He wasn't sure, but he may have been the one shouting for medical assistance. Heaven knows the young Marine was in pain, bleeding from multiple bullet wounds. He saw the Huey arrive, his squad mates boarding it in the midst of a fierce firefight. As Jones' eyes closed for the last time, he heard the helicopter taking off without him, leaving him to die in the insanely hot Vietnam jungle. He didn't begrudge his fellow Marines for this, however; it was obvious he wasn't going to make it, and there was no sense in them dying in a vain attempt to bring his body back. As he fell into a long, dark sleep, he merely wished they could come back and get him so his wife could bury him back home.

Jones was somewhat surprised to awaken in the cloning vat, completely naked. He was more surpised to find himself forty years in the future, his wife remarried after having her MIA husband declared dead in the 1980s. But the most surpising thing of all was to be confronted by another "him," an undead being known as the United States Marine Corpse. The revenant explained to Jones that he sensed the clone becoming aware, and wanted to head him off before Jones could contact his former wife and reopen her emotional wounds. After a long talk with the USMC, Jones decided that he would put his Marine skills to use protecting innocents and fighting crime. Armed with modern weapons and body armor supplied by USMC's teammates in the Guardians of History, GI Jones appears nothing like his undead other self. They avoid each other, both seeking to make new lives in a world very different from the one they had left.

New Team: The Saturn Five

These five superheroes, officially sponsored by NASA, are able to travel to and safely operate in space. For a sixth "member," someone can name and describe their orbital base. The team's theme is based on rockets, satellites, probes, rovers, or other man-made space objects (real or imagined).

Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

Telstar Omega is the orbital base of Saturn Five, named after the famous communications satellite of old. It (or rather "she" as the members refer to the sentient AI) is fully automated, highly defended, very comfortable and able to translate any modern Earth language. NASA suspects Telstar is capable of translating certain alien languages as well. Telstar is also armed with a VERY powerful rail cannon. Thankfully, NASA has 3 remote back-up kill switches for the weapon just in case. Right now, NASA is mum as to where or how exactly they created this base for the team. Telstar has a very sultry voice based off the speech patterns of Kathleen Turner.

Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

Pioneer

My name is Tenk. Clan names are believed to distract from one's loyalty to the Pyrknot Empire and are thus discouraged. My grandfather , three gods bless his spirit, informed me that our clan name was Cralk. Then again, Grandfather told me many things that the Sci-crat council would not approve of. He told me that in HIS grandfather's time, the Empire was a republic in which ANY being of sufficient age and sanity could vote. He told me that we were not always bent on conquest, nor would we have considered sending thousands to their deaths just to get a handful of 'superior men'. Somehow I doubt this last one. Despite the implants that are put in each applicant's brain to insure loyalty or death, there is no more honored or coveted position than being a 'Superior Man' and they never want for volunteers. Their strength is astounding, they are nearly invulnerable, and best of all, they can fly at great speeds and survive even the depths of space. Of course, only the most obedient are accepted. I am not obedient, and this will never be for me. Still, I shall be drafted for standard legion duty. I have entered my 12th cycle. Conscription is mandatory.

My name is Tenk. Cycles have passed, and my insubordination demerits have reduced me to the lowly task of gathering space scrap for deconstruction. If the Empire thought my grandfather's termination would free me from his 'wrong think contamination', they have misjudged. I will not partake in the genocide of planets under the name of 'biosphere cleansing' or any other such thing. I will not abandon my faith of the three gods. If they do not exist, then the government has no need to be so frightened . I dare not speak my mind, or even think too loudly among the reader-supervisor probes, but I will hold to old dreams long dust. My ship's sensors pick up something on the fringe. I go to retrieve it like a good worker despite what my heart says. I am brave in my heart, but my hands? They are cowards

For the last four mini cycles I have studied this. It is amazing. Some species was foolish enough to send knowledge of themselves hurtling into the void? Did they not suspect others would not share their apparent love of exploration, but rather see them as weak and naive, and ready for conquest? I have hidden this 'Pioneer' and its data as best I could. The plaque of precious metal is lovely, not for its substance, but for the trust, however stupid, it shows. I am not stupid, merely disloyal, so I learn what I can from it. So much data... so much hope, so much striving for the better. I wonder if the forgotten Republic was like this once? I wonder about this 'Earth'

Another four minicycles. I can bear it no longer here. If there is a rebellion, I cannot find it to join it. Instead I must escape. Somehow. I will go to this Earth, whatever it is, it MUST be better than this. Younger, newer, still having a future that need not be trapped in the rigid rulings of those who dub themselves 'elite'. I worry that the naivety contained in this prize is contagious. So be it, if this is fever, I would rather burn than be 'healthy and accepting of the Empire'. I want a new home. This Earth may yet be it. But how? My ship, like all others, is chipped. If I go half a parsec without authorization, it WILL be noted, the fail safes will be triggered, and I will die. I must get my hands on the authorization bypass... I must steal. It means death if I am caught. So be it.

One minicycle later. This is insane. I have rifled data, but the wrong sort. Alpha Clearance? Coordinates and a key code of some sort to a building I didn't even know existed. Still, what other lead do I have?

Three Gods preserve me! It's the Empowerment Chamber. That drunken fool left data on the Empowerment chamber laying about! This is where common men become 'Superior', only one in a thousand survives. Yet... applicants are chipped. I am not. My dreams are braver than I am. If I take this chance, IF it works, I will gain the ability to fly on my own! Perhaps I can find Earth. Maybe I can warn them? The system is automated. The key will start it up. I am scared and that more than anything sets me on this last path. I am so TIRED of being afraid. Is a life of slavery, of constant fear, worth preserving? For once, my heroic heart and my coward hands work together. I start the empowerment procedures.

Time passed, unknown. I have awakened after what felt like a life time of pain and I am strong. The strongest polyfiber materials bend in my grip. Even their jagged edges do not pierce me! Perhaps my grandfather was right, the Three love fools and children. This cannot be the only empowerment chamber, but if I can slow down them down at all, I may have done SOME world out there some good. I set an old style explosive in the right place. The fire it starts will draw the Council's attention allowing me time to flee. It would seem I still have something of a coward in me. Either that, or I'm not a total fool.

Three Full Cycles... I do not eat. I do not drink. I rarely sleep. Mostly, I fly, carrying a part of the treasure that inspires me. I have fought some Superior Men, but only by luck have I triumphed, and never more than two at a time. They are chipped. They may only go so far. This worked in my favor. One died painfully as I tricked him out of his safe zone.

I have lost them.

I MUST believe that

Otherwise, I am damning the home I seek.

Another full cycle, I think. I am long gone from the homestar of the Empire, so who can be sure? Please, let this be the right system. I look for the third planet and it is beautiful. Blue with white wisps adorning it. Oceans, clouds, but knowing what causes these colors does not diminish it. I fly downward but before I enter the atmosphere, I see something drifting by in the corner of my eye. A crude craft, a shuttle that makes my old junk collector look like a top of the line battle cruiser in comparison. It is leaking gasses, no doubt its life support. They are trying to get down to the surface as well, but at the rate of the leak, they will never make it, not without help. This, I gladly provide, though the looks on their faces are amusing. Amazing how like

Pyrknotians they look. I only hope they have not followed us in otherways. I see no weapons on this vehicle. No doubt, the humans are now wondering why I am smiling.

Soon I am placing the vessel gently down on a primitive and seemingly unused road. The men and women leave the ship, one of them HUGS me? They talk, but I don't understand. I reach for my back and pull out from a casing the plaque I took so long ago from their creation and lay it down before them. I speak the only 'English' word I am sure I know as I do so

"Pioneer"

A cycle, no.. a year later. My name is Tenk, but even my friends and coworkers on Saturn Five often call me by my 'superhero' name Pioneer. I have learned three Earth Languages, though I am told my English has something of a Polish accent. Ironic, as Polish is not one the languages I was able to learn. The United States is no utopia, but compared to the Empire? it is a paradise. I worship the three gods unhindered. I speak my mind as I NEVER could before. I pick my own meals as long as I can pay for them (Though I do not really NEED to eat), and I try to be a good superhero. Between traditional superheroics, I help retrieve satellites, repair devices, and deal with any space emergencies. I have tried to share what I know, but sometimes I look down on the planet and worry.

IF the Empire finds this Earth, am I preparing my new home to face them? Or have I somehow insured that the question is not "if" but "when"?

Years ago Antares Corporation made great strides in their efforts to dominate space travel and exploration in the private sector. Long before their vaunted missions to the Moon and Mars there was their Star Probe project dedicated to the discovery of alien life. The Antares Corp. Star Probe drone was lost not long after its launch... but now, SHE'S back.

Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

Personal log, 9 August 2010, 4:11 p.m.

It's been three months since I escaped from Teleios, and I'm still getting the hang of this teleportation thing, not to mention the other changes he did. Yeah, sure, it's cool that I can bop up to the moon in the wink of an eye and survive in vaccuum like I'm standing in my own living room. I can hear and talk and even see up and down the radio spectrum. And hey, this metallic skin means never getting another bruise again. I just wish I could take it all off and get back to a normal life. But no dice. Now I look like the female version of Ironside. My fiance was so freaked out, he dumped me like nobody's business. So thanks, Teleios, for completely screwing up my love-life.

For some reason, I can teleport to low Earth orbit with near-perfect accuracy, but I can't seem to teleport a dozen feet across the room without ending up halfway across town instead. The long-distance stuff is easy; I've always been great with numbers, basically a savant. I could do complex calculations in my head like you wouldn't believe, even back in high school. That's how I ended up working at NASA, calculating orbital dynamics like some people balance their checkbooks. I guess that's also how I ended up on Teleios's radar. Now, I can not only see the numbers and do the math in my head, but once I've taken a few seconds to calculate velocity, vectors, and all the rest, I can push a little mental button and *bam* there I am. I can even take other people with me, though it wears me out a bit. Pretty cool, right?

Well, my big news today is that it looks like NASA's going to keep me on the payroll, even after that fiasco with the comm sattelite. How was I to know that teleporting it would scramble the circuits? All the tests showed no EM or other radiation emitted during my 'port, so it should have been safe. It is safe, for some simpler things, but I guess satellites are a bit too fragile. We could have saved millions on transport-to-orbit costs. Still could, maybe, if we can figure out how to shield the satellite from whatever it was that fried its brain. But that’s not what the job is about.

No, NASA’s starting some group up, calling it Saturn Five. Hey, the Pentagon and FBI and the Secret Service have their own supers, why not a cutting-edge agency like NASA? I’m going to be their transport specialist, in case any of ‘em can’t get to LEO without a little help. They gave me a bunch of names to choose from, and I picked Opportunity. Hey, it’s a kick-butt Mars rover, still rollin' along six and a half years after its design lifespan, going places that people never thought it would reach. That suits me just fine.
