“You know, I can always remember hearing some sort of music in the house. My father and mother both play the guitar and sing. So do most of my aunts and uncles. Also, my grandmother sings and plays traditional folk music. Music was so much a part of them and it soon became so much a part of me. I loved my family, so I really looked forward to Sunday dinners at Grandmother’s house.

“There was always lots and lots to eat (southern style) and lots and lots of music (southern style). That’s the way I spent the first eleven years of my life, playing and singing country and gospel songs on the radio in a little town not too far away called Murray, Ky. They were very happy times for me. As I rode the school bus home every night to the farm, I sang all the way. It seemed to make the time pass quickly.

“I must confess I loved to sing so much I would have done the same had I only ridden a block. My first break came one crisp Easter Sunday. I was asked to sing a solo in church that morning. My heart was so full I could barely go through it. Farm life was getting a little tough for mom and dad so we pulled up stakes and moved to Aurora, Ill., my mother’s home town. My father resumed his other trade, barbering.”
