Metahuman News Welcome to the new year, and a strange milestone in my life. The year was 1990, I was a free range tween living on the isle of Manhattan cast adrift with fresh babysitting cash and a desire for something new. This led to a mall, towering as they are in the city, where I found a glossy image calling from the shelves of, what I want to say was a KB Toy Store. The image, a yellow eyed solo smart gun in hand, wires plugged into their spine, rocking jacket, and a car with driver waiting. This was not another Dungeons & Dragons module, this was Cyberpunk. That was nearly thirty years ago, and history has caught up to us. Of course if you haven't heard, Cyberpunk 2077 is now only a few precious months away, and there is a new tabletop game on the horizon as well. It's a good time to be a gamer. So, what does this have to do with Metahumans Rising? With World Builders we wanted to give players new challenges. We've talked about the evolution of the Deadheads, and the expansion of military forces. Now lets talk about the Rippers.Working in the information sector there is a quote that has rings disturbingly true "The Street finds its own uses for things - uses the manufacturers never imagined." - William Gibson, Burning Chrome This may be the founding doctrine of the Rippers. “We’ve survived three alien invasions. The short version, poachers, harvesting humans for experimentation, an intergalactic turf war, and some Christopher Columbus types. Every last one of them left scars on this planet. Just like they left the kit they couldn’t recall. Throw in the occasional super jumpsuit that gets bopped and there's a whole lot of lost tech out there. What do Rippers do? We bash it, bag it, kit it, and thrash with it. Saddle up kid, it’s time to go fishing.” - Tabby,, Astro Kiddie The Ripper hierarchy is as follows: Gutter Scraps Benders Tough Nuts and Gunners Junk Dogs Astro Kiddies Docs Mic Droppers Wreckers and the Glitterati Over the next few weeks we will explore what this means, and who the Rippers are as a group. Metahuman News
This week we return to our preview of the Rippers with details on their entry level members, the Gutter Scraps, Benders, Tough Nuts, and Gunners. What it takes to earn a jacket in the gang, and just what a Ripper’s jacket means, hint, bad news.

One number that epidemiologists want to know is how many people one person with the virus tends to infect — known as R0, or R-naught. An R0 of higher than 1 means that countermeasures such as quarantine will be needed to contain the pathogen’s spread.

On Thursday evening, after a meeting of an emergency committee responding to the outbreak, the World Health Organization (WHO) published an estimated R0 of 1.4 to 2.5. Other teams have since come up with slightly higher values — but all the estimates come with large uncertainties.

The field of particle physics addresses questions of fundamental importance that excite the imaginations of scientists and the general public: what are the elementary particles that make up the universe, and what are their properties? Neutrino research is a particularly active subfield of particle physics because there are many questions regarding the nature of neutrinos that are currently unanswered, and the answers to these questions have important implications for our understanding of the universe.

While we now know that neutrinos have mass, we do not know what the neutrino masses are or why they are so much smaller than the masses of the other fundamental particles. The existence of small neutrino mass causes neutrino oscillations, in which a neutrino created in one lepton flavor state is subsequently detected to be in another flavor state. Neutrino oscillation experiments have provided much of our current knowledge regarding neutrinos (in fact, we only know that neutrinos have mass because of the discovery that they oscillate), and many of the parameters that describe neutrino oscillation have been measured. However, we do not know if neutrinos oscillate differently than antineutrinos, violating CP symmetry. The discovery of CP violation in neutrino oscillations would be a significant result beyond particle physics, as it could provide an explanation for the dominance of matter over antimatter in the universe. Two oscillation experiments, T2K and NOvA, have recently detected hints of large neutrino CP violation. DUNE, a future oscillation experiment, will likely provide the first statistically significant detection of neutrino CP violation if systematic errors from neutrino interaction physics can be controlled.

There are three known neutrinos, each of which participates in neutrino oscillations. Results from LSND, MiniBooNE, and other experiments deviate from the three- neutrino picture by hinting at the existence of at least one new particle called a "sterile neutrino." However, there is some tension between these measurements and no result is individually significant enough to confirm a discovery. The MicroBooNE experiment is designed to study the MiniBooNE result in greater detail, while the Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN) program will definitively determine whether the sterile neutrino interpretation is correct. The discovery of a low-mass sterile neutrino would be groundbreaking due to its unexpectedness and implications, and it would dramatically influence future work in particle physics and cosmology.
