Another "Battle Royale" Question: John Preston Vs Judge Dredd ?

Inspired by the programming on a US cable channel this evening:

As the subject line says, who do you think would win in a stand up fight: John Preston from the Kurt Wimmer film "Equilibrium" or Judge Dredd from the comic series (and film) of the same name (ie; "Judge Dredd") ? John Preston has gun kata but Dredd has the Lawgiver Mark II......Hmmmmm ?

Re: Another "Battle Royale" Question: John Preston Vs Judge Dredd ?

I'd have to go with John Preston on this one. True, both men are undeniably good

with guns, but Preston has the advantage not only of speed, but of outgunning

Dredd as well. Whereas Dredd has to draw his Lawgiver from a hip holster, all that

Preston has to do is hit the quick-release catches of his arm holsters to bring his

guns out and grab hold of them.

End result: by the time that Dredd's got the Lawgiver out and bringing it to the

firing position, Preston's had time to put several well-aimed rounds into the only

unprotected areas on Dredd's body -- just below the visor of his helmet and

just above his uniform collar. And -- to add insult to injury -- if Dredd's helmet

happens to have a defective visor, the odds are very good that at least one of

Preston's shots will go right through the 'T' (the spot on a human head where,

if a bullet hits it exactly right, the spine will be instantly severed, killing the per-

son on the spot).

Preston also has the option of engaging Dredd in close-quarters combat as well,

using his martial arts training and his modified pistols to do some major damage.

I think that if John Preston and Judge Dredd were isolated on a small Japanese island and told to kill each other, initial antagonism would evolve into an appreciation of each other's physical prowess. Inadvertent physical contact would be returned leading to softly driving instrumental music starting up in the background.....There would be nudity. Oh yes, there would be nudity.

I'm sorry. What was the question again?

I haven't seen Equilibrium so I can't really vote, but I would like to note that in the comic book Judge Dread is unbelievably fast. Really, he frequently does stuff that isn't humanly possible leading me to wonder whether he is secretly an android or something.

Yeah, I'd have to go with Dredd as well. In addition to being incredibly fast, he's also got years of experience, and is deadly accurate. He's also an incredibly effective HTH combatant, going up against (literally) inhuman foes and surviving. Against merely human foes he tends to leave a path of moaning bodies behind him. All of that might match off with Preston (though based on what we see in the movie, I'd doubt he has quite the expertise or combat savagery Dredd has) But in addition, Dredd has a weapon that outshines any conventional handgun, plus a utility belt with a variety of useful items. And unlike Batman no illusions about honour or "fighting fair": if the best way to beat an opponent is by blinding him with a flare and then lighting him up with a homing bullet, well ...

Batman kicked dredd's ass when they fought.

Actually, both times they fought it's been what I'd call a draw. The first fight, when Batman went to Megacity 1, was a walkover for Dredd - unconscious batman carted off to the cells. But that time Dredd caught Batboy by surprise and one-punched him. In the rematch, when Dredd came to Gotham, Batman got the best of it, but Dredd was just trying to keep him busy, and so wasn't actually fighting to win. Even so he went toe to toe with the Bat for a prolonged period: there aren't many people who can do that. And then, after beating up on each other for most of the trade, Dredd called a time out and said "OK, time travel paradox thingie averted. We can quit fighting now." :)

Markdoc beat me to it, heh. Dredd would mop the floor with Preston. Then cart him off to the cubes for transporting Contraband Canines in the trunk of his illegal fuel burning vehicle.
