Cyberpunk: how did it change?

Re: Cyberpunk: how did it change?

I think cyberpunk is actually a poor name for the genre. The 'punk' distracts and narrows impressions. I've prefer the term 'tech noir'.

Re: Cyberpunk: how did it change?

It's called Cyberpunk because of the one story actually called that - which literally involved a hacker street punk. Of course, the original story envisioned the "youth" (i.e. Teenagers) being the main focus of the futures deconstruction.

That'd be interesting, if CP ended up a YA sub-genre instead.

Yes, but they aren't contributing to the discussion - unless we actually start discussing "cyberpunk themed music" .... which I would argue doesn't exist, as the rivet-heads scoff at your "rock and roll" (Konya Wa Hurricane) and the gamer populace in general aren't noisecore, hardcore, industrial, EBM, or IDM fans.... And that doesn't even get the modern Cybergoths involved in the topic.

Actually, Dubstep is totally cyberpunk themed music. It's totally the soundtrack to my world. Listen to Skream's Dark Side Of Life and tell me that's not totally cyberpunk. I love it - gets me in the mood to write/draw.

Anyway, back on topic - we're actually living in the cyberpunk future. We can't all connect to machines with our brains yet, but there's a couple quadriplegics that can (they're hooked to a robotic arm that they control with their brainwaves).

Also, I don't know if it's been mentioned already, but William Gibson kicked himself for not thinking of cell phones for his Sprawl series. He coined the terms "matrix" and "cyberspace", but totally missed the cell phone. Heh.

Here at Otakon they're selling brainwave-controlled cat ears for $110.00 a pop.
