"Guns, Germs, and Steel" by Jared Diamond. An interesting and informative read. The main idea is that Europeans developed a powerful society before anyone else did NOT because Europeans were in any way superior to anyone else, but because Europe is the only part of the Earth that meets the requirements for building a powerful society. If you've ever played a 4X or civilization builder game, you probably know all about crappy start locations.

I read this.  It was fascinating.  It didn't seem like fiction when I read it though.  ;)

Miko by Eric Lustbader. This is the second Nicholas Linnear book  Nicholas is bodyguarding the industrialist Tomkin whose daughter he is dating. This takes him to Japan to a merger between Tomkin's business and a Japanese one. And then the head of the Japanese firm is marrying Nicholas's lost love Yukio who Saigo had told him he had killed.

There were a couple of bits in the book when you are not sure what exactly has happened. Otherwise ok.

The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer. Each pilgrim going to Canterbury has to tell a tale. Technically each one has to tell two on the way there and two on the way back. However only one from each is included and some of these are incomplete. It is still good. I had only read bits and pieces and now have finished it all.
