Megaera.

When I made this one, I experimented with using "tone" for shading. It's really just a perfectly even array of black dots, and is a standard technique in comics illustration (especially black and white and low-resolution comics which can't otherwise represent shades of grey). But I've noticed that at certain screen resolutions the tone doesn't reproduce evenly and weird patterns appear in the supposedly even shading. Maybe thats something a professional would know to expect, but it came as a surprise to me. Do you get that effect when you look at this picture on your computer?

Are her eye and mouth supposed to look that creepy?

Yes, her expression is meant to convey that she's pretty damn insane. I must admit, however, that the final effect is probably overdone and is more caricature than I had wanted.

Grenadier.

I never understood her costume--it seems incongruous given her personality and powerset. If the character were some sort of seduction artist like the Scarlet Queen (Adventurers Club #26) or a girly-girl brick or combat artist, then the costume would make sense in the context of a superhero world. But the Grenadier character (Villains, Vandals & Vermin, pg. 82) is neither a seduction artist or a girly-girl--she's described as "callous, cruel, self-centered, and almost totally lacking in compassion or sympathy"--and it seems to me that the last thing someone like that would wear would be a reddish-pink swimsuit with a large heart-shaped cutout and thigh-high boots.

My thoughts on Grenadier's costume is that it should be either black or gray--or perhaps a mixture of both. It need not be skintight; something like combat fatigues would work well. One item I would add would be a bandolier loaded with easily-thrown objects--rubber balls, soda cans, etc.--so she doesn't completely depend on objects of opportunity to charge with her power.

That's just what I'm thinking--and this is not a criticism of Epiphanis, who has done a great job depicting these characters. I'm just wondering what the rationale was for giving Grenadier a pink outfit.

I suspect the coloration of Grenadier's costume is supposed to be reminiscent of the traditional protective covering of stick dynamite. I'm probably more guilty of sexifying Grenadier on my own initiative (because I like and am practicing making "Good Girl Art") than Steve's written description is. Storn's Villains Vol. 3 illustration is probably much more to your liking, although I disagree with his addition of leg straps and bandoleers.

The only other illustration for Grenadier I've seen is Richard Hawkins' from VV&V, and between that and Steve giving her a 13 COM, I suspect she is meant to appear "sexy." So technically speaking, you got it right.

That said, I still think the costume does not fit the character.

Kudos to you for being a fan of "Good Girl" art.
