I think the subjects of teenage romance and sexuality are very important to handle in the context of a Teen Champions game. I mean, look at "teen-centric" entertainment: Buffy, Smallville, Vampire Diaries, etc., all focus on romance and sexuality to some degree. Handling that tastefully, accurately, and, most importantly, usefully, is a challenge, but quite a rewarding one.

Can you PM me to clarify that? Thanks.

I'll need to do a little research about the clinical real world facts first before I address it. It's been a while since I was a teenager, but I sometimes think people forget just how "charged up" they got at that age.

This is why I laugh at "Just say No" campaigns. Not that it wouldn't be good and worthwhile if we could somehow keep the bodies of teenagers completely free of controlled substances, but even then we couldn't keep those same bodies from manufacturing even more dangerous UNcontrolled substances.

Re: The "Essay"(ESSE/UEH) Project(Warning: mature/controversial content contained her

Okay, working on expanding my Sexual Combat system. I'm starting by fleshing out the attraction and desire section at the beginning, and going a little more in-depth about clothing. Here's what I have so far:

Attraction and Desire

Of course, before one can get down to. . . well, getting down, there’s the little problem of attracting someone to get down with.

Finding a partner can be handled in any number of ways. It can be as simple as walking up to someone and asking them point blank if they want to have sex (note: studies claim that 1 out of every 10 people approached in this manner will say yes.) Others favor more discrete, subtle, or downright manipulative approaches, while still others are genuinely interested in sitting down and talking with an interesting person, getting to know them before getting to “know” them.

How one handles “the pick-up” depends greatly on the situation, characters, and approach involved. When dealing with PCs, this sort of interaction will most often be role-played, and will probably go on for quite some time before the PCs involved even realize (or admit) that their characters are flirting. With NPCs RP may or may not be involved. Skill rolls can come into play at any time, as one character attempts to woo another (PC or not.) Nearly any skill could be justified as part of a flirting or seductive attempt (some people do, in fact, get quite excited by an intelligent conversation about particle physics.)

Basic physical attraction is most often the realm of RP and character decision. After all, so many factors go into what may or may not be someone’s “type” that it is most often best left to the decisions of the individual characters involved. However, sometimes a character may want to attract a character who isn’t normally attracted to them, or increase a character’s level of attraction. This can be resolved with a simple Presence attack.

Clothing

As they say, the clothes make the man, and it can be equally true for females. How one is dressed (or undressed) can play a significant factor in the areas of attraction and arousal.

Normal clothing is the benchmark by which all other outfits are judged, and is assumed to the be standard for an early 21st century American: well-fitting jeans or slacks, a short- or long-sleeved shirt, shoes or sandals, possibly a light coat or heavy shirt, depending on weather.

Oh my God, I saw ankle!!

It should be noted that not only does fashion change rapidly, but what is and is not acceptable attire for public wear has changed dramatically. There was a time when showing bare foot or ankle was scandalously revealing. On the flip side, there are places where women never wear anything over their breasts. Depending on where and when a campaign is set, the following clothing guildelines may change.

Modestly revealing clothing can consist of tank tops, short shorts, tight pants and shirts, shirts that are slightly translucent (such as thin, white tops through which a woman’s bra may be seen), and other clothing that, while still perfectly normal public attire, is a little more sexy than usual. Such clothes can add between five and ten points to character’s Presence for purposes of an attraction or arousal PRE attack.

Provocative clothing takes things just one step further. Bikinis, corsets, bustiers, painted-on pants and tops, see-through shirts, and other such risqué attire can add between ten and twenty points to a character’s Presence for purposes of an attraction or arousal PRE attack. Most superhero costumes (especially for female heroes) tends to fall around this level. Such clothing is, by definition, legal to wear (it does not show anything that would legally be considered indecent exposure), though it does brush right up against that line.

Extremely provocative clothing is not legal to wear in public. Lingerie, sheer cloth with nothing to obscure “vital areas,” and actual nudity falls into this category. Such clothing can add up to thirty points to a character’s Presence for purposes of an attraction or arousal PRE attack, and may actually provide an additional bonus to such PRE attacks (lingerie, for instance, is designed to make the woman wearing it look as drop-dead sexy as possible.)

On the other end of the spectrum, conservative clothing is less revealing than normal dress. Business suits, uniforms, and cool-weather clothing fall into this category, and can subtract between five and ten points from a character’s Presence for purposes of an attraction or arousal PRE attack.

Extremely conservative clothing, such as cold-weather snowsuits and other bulky attire, can subtract between ten and twenty points from a character’s Presence for purposes of an attraction or arousal PRE attack.

Wardrobe Malfunctions

In comics (especially those governed by the Comics Code), no matter how stringy, filmy, or insubstantial a characters costume may appear, it has the supernatural ability to avoid tearing in awkward ways, and keeps even the most gravity-defying bosoms held firmly in place. For those wanting to add an extra level of realism to their HERO games, the following optional system is provided.

Normal clothing is the benchmark, the measure by which all other outfits are judged. Some of the systems below refer to a “Wardrobe Rating,” a convenient measure of how resilient a character’s costume is. Normal clothing is considered to have a Wardrobe Rating of ten, with each next most revealing type clothing subtracting from this Wardrobe Rating. So, a character wearing Modestly Revealing clothing has a Wardobe Rating of nine, while a character wearing Extremely Provocative clothing has a Wardrobe Rating of 7. Naked characters, obviously, have no Wardrobe Rating. More conservative dress adds to the Wardrobe Rating.

A character’s clothing may become dislodged when the character is subjected to extreme forces, perhaps revealing some of the character’s. . . attributes. Such conditions arise when:

A character moves their full noncombat movement in a single phase.

The character suffers knockback in excess of their Wardrobe Rating.

The character breaks free of a grab.

The character breaks free of an Entangle with physical-type special effects.

Now, my thought is to actually create a table with different wardrobe ratings, some examples, and effects for PRE attacks and Wardrobe Malfunctions. Essentially, give every sort of outfit it's own "Body" rating, which will be rolled against when the possibility of a Wardrobe Malfunction manifests. Rolling under this means everything is fine, while rolling above it can have a variety of effects, based on how high the roll was, ranging from no real impact (other than having to "tuck back in"), to the clothing literally being blasted off the character's body.

Thoughts?

Re: The "Essay"(ESSE/UEH) Project(Warning: mature/controversial content contained her

ErikModi, not bad, just a couple constructive comments:

1. Striking Appearance, only vs. those attracted to women, is too broad to really qualify as limited SA, so it should probably cost the full 30 points.

2. Complications--I don't think "Frequent sexual assault victim", as presented, qualifies as "negative rep", let alone extreme.

3. She orgasms whenever her power belt is deactivated, or her power belt deactivates whenever she has an orgasm? I'm guessing it's the latter, but could probably be made clearer.

Re: The "Essay"(ESSE/UEH) Project(Warning: mature/controversial content contained her

Thanks for the input.

I thought that "only those attracted to women" was one of the definitions of a limited Striking Appearance, I'll have to double-check.

I was a bit worried about the phrasing of that complication, but I think it fits as an interesting theme to explore. Basically looking at the "blame the victim" tendency from all sides. Some would claim that the character is at best ineffectual, at worst a closet masochist, since these things happen to her a lot. My main concern was in creating offense by even bringing up the "blame the victim" concept.

When she orgasms, the power belt is deactivated for a certain amount of time. How can I clear up that phrasing?

I'd probably reduce the level of neg rep, and rephrase it to "frequently captured, ineffectual, closet masochist?", dunno if it'd really cause an extreme response though. I'd still be leery of that, precisely because of the implication that the character is deliberately letting herself be captured and taken advantage of. OTOH, see my Jayna Jemson writeup, which pretty much implies at least that sort of thing isn't exactly traumatic for her.

(I suppose you could also have a male supervillain who enjoys getting beaten up by superheroines...)

For the Accidental Change, I might rephrase it "Power Belt deactivates when she reaches sexual climax". OTOH, her Power Belt is an OAF, couldn't they just remove it from her instead? Unified Power and Focus are probably a little bit redundant, upon reflection.

Capture/Bondage/Assault(CBA) and Erotic Mind Control(EMC) scenarios have a clear coercion element in them, in that such scenarios are assumed to be non-consensual. If some kind of consent occurs during or after the scenario, of course that's problematic from a moral standpoint--many people would not see a difference between a coercive act which was never consented to and one where the subject of the act decided to consent sometime after the initiation or completion of the act. In genre fiction and RPGs, however, it might constitute a moral gray area(if you mentally command someone to perform an activity they're normally opposed to or have inhibitions about doing, and then they enjoy it greatly, when the control ends they may have mixed feelings about the experience, some of those feelings being of a type they didn't expect to have). The problem, from a group dynamics standpoint, is treading a fine line and avoiding ragequit/table-flipping/button-pushing stuff that players make clear they're not okay with.

Maybe. I'll have to look at Extreme reaction, see what I think, get my thoughts organized. I like the more precise wording.

(I suppose you could also have a male supervillain who enjoys getting beaten up by superheroines...)

Captain Carnage, mentioned in Watchmen, is this. And not just female heroes. I plan to advance a few more characters playing into these themes, "villains" who want to be punished/beaten/defeated by heroes, and "heroes" who are only in it to be punished/beaten/defeated by villains, though I fear some may find the subject matter. . . distasteful.

For the Accidental Change' date=' I might rephrase it "Power Belt deactivates when she reaches sexual climax". OTOH, her Power Belt is an OAF, couldn't they just remove it from her instead? Unified Power and Focus are probably a little bit redundant, upon reflection.[/quote']

For removal, it's been claimed that she can prevent the belt from being removed by focusing, and thus needs to be distracted for the belt to be removed, thus leading to the "make her come, then take off the belt." It's been handled a bit inconsistently I think. . . not surprising, since superhero stores aren't known for internal consistency when they AREN'T vehicles for porn.

I thought that Unified and Focus might be too much overlap, and toyed with the idea of removing Unified, but that would really increase the cost of a lot of her powers. I think Unified fits from the standpoint that, while the Power Belt Focus is the source of all her powers, this power can be Drained. Unified is mostly for the use of Drain/Suppress and similar abilities, so they seemed sufficiently different disadvantages that both worked, at least I thought so.

Capture/Bondage/Assault(CBA) and Erotic Mind Control(EMC) scenarios have a clear coercion element in them' date=' in that such scenarios are assumed to be non-consensual. The problem, from a group dynamics standpoint, is treading a fine line and avoiding ragequit/table-flipping/button-pushing stuff that players make clear they're not okay with.[/quote']

And that's at the heart of it all. These themes are exactly the sort of thing this character is ideally suited to explore, and something I'd like to see detailed in our "Erotic HERO" project. While the subject can be approached from the angle of simple titillation, I think it would be far more interesting to really, honestly explore how that kind of story really functions. Sort of relating back to the NEgative Rep, as people see Ms. Americana as consistently getting stripped, humiliated, abused, etc. But stop to think, at the same time. . . it's commonly acknowledged in most superhero fiction that the good guys put their lives on the line every day to save people they don't know. In this genre, the heroine risks not only being injured or killed, but being sexually assaulted. Knowing THAT consequence is possible, doesn't it make her that much more heroic?

The thought being that, while the embarrassing things that happen to her are one thing, the idea that she keeps getting herself into those situations because she's just a poor excuse for a superheroine, or worse, because she actually ENJOYS being captured and abused, are two separate bad raps.

Re: The "Essay"(ESSE/UEH) Project(Warning: mature/controversial content contained her

Well, in-genre, the "routine trauma" that superheroes go through--concussions, near-death experiences, personal betrayals, witnessing assaults and murders, being mind-controlled, dealing with kidnapped/threatened DNPCs, facing off with terrifyingly inhuman enemies--seems to have an effect significantly less debilitating than what it would do in the "real world". I suppose it's not a stretch to suggest that even sexual assault might be less traumatic for superheroes than it is in reality, as well. That of course is not to say the awfulness of it should be minimized in-game, but rather to put into the larger overall context--terrible things happen to superheroes, but part of what makes them superheroes is apparently their ability to shrug off "super-trauma".

Edit: Just to clarify, I don't want to fall down the slippery slope of "it's rape, but it's not 'Rape'-rape". I was just suggesting that being sexually assaulted is a very traumatic, brutal experience, but so are a dozen other things that routinely happen to superheroes. Whether to include such a trauma in a campaign setting should be a matter for the individual comfort zones of individual game groups. It should go without saying that it's not a decision to be taken lightly. There's not really any sort of RPG handbook on how to handle sexual assault(and I'm not talking in terms of "gaming out the rape"(which is execrable for me to even type)), and I feel ill-qualified to even attempt writing such advice. The only things I can think of, offhand:

1. NEVER impose a SA scenario on a player or group without prior consent.

2. NEVER, as a player, initiate such an action without extensive consultation with GM and group.

3. It goes without saying that there should be severe consequences(not just legal, either) for PCs who, for whatever reason(mind-control, demonic corruption, going off the deep end, etc.) engage in such offensive criminal acts.

4. Allow a PC dealing with the trauma of being assaulted, witnessing an assault, or comforting a DNPC/NPC who is assaulted, plenty of opportunity to RP through the aftermath, coping and recovery process.

5. Minimalism is preferable to maximalism--SA as a recurring theme is unlikely to be appealing to most mature gamers.

Okay, this character needs some explaining, or she could SO be taken in the wrong context.

The idea is loosely based on the first episode of Who Wants To Be A Superhero. At the opening of the episode, they're showing some of the interviews which determined the contestants for the show, and one of them was an attractive young blond who dropped her top during the interview, explaining that "for distraction purposes, I like to fight topless." This idea sort of gelled with something else. A recent public event across the US is called a "Slut Walk," the basic premise of which is that anyone should be able to dress however they like (obviously, within legal limits) and not have to fear for their safety. That, in essence, a short skirt and halter top does NOT mean "she's asking for it." These two ideas blended together to create this character, a first attempt at designing a heroine who actually uses her sexuality as a weapon against her opponents.

This also ties in with the strong correlation between superhero story arcs and soap opera, especially since Chris Claremont. ;)

My borderline take on this concept was Sunbather, a California surfer-turned-model who developed the mutant power of solar energy absorption (similar to Superman, but more like The Authority's Apollo in execution, i.e. most of her Powers are on END Reserve). The problem being that since the energy is absorbed through the skin, her "Hero ID" is the thinnest bikini legally possible. :D

Re: The "Essay"(ESSE/UEH) Project(Warning: mature/controversial content contained her

And a word on base facilities. . .

Erotic Base Facilities

Naturally, characters in an Erotic HERO campaign will want to have areas where they can. . . indulge themselves. And certainly some heroes will want their base to be adequately equipped for their more horizontal adventures.

Play Rooms

Play Rooms are the generic name for any base facility designed to support the performance of sexual activities. While “basic” sexual activity can be easily performed without special facilities (and indeed, with just a little creativity, can be performed practically anywhere!) other kinds of sexual activity require a certain amount of infrastructure.

Play Rooms contain “stations,” places where the sexual activity in question can be performed. The “default” station for “normal” sexual activity, is, of course, a bed, though a station can be nearly anything required for the performance of a given sexual activity. A station costs 1 character point and takes up one cubic meter of space per person it can accommodate. Thus, a basic, single bed costs one character point and takes up one cubic meter of space, while a double bed costs two character points and takes up 2 cubic meters of space.

Play Rooms can support any kind of sexual activity, and can even support multiple types at the same time, simply by purchasing more stations. For instance, a single Play Room could have one or more beds for “normal” sex, frames and racks for impact play, massage tables for sensual massage, hangars for suspension play, and so on.

Play Rooms will also probably want to incorporate some amount of storage, especially if they are meant for kinky sex, which often requires additional “accessories.” Even “normal” sexual activity may require additional supplies on hand, from condoms and other safe sex tools to additional lubricants and so on. Every one character point of storage can hold up to ten sexual items, and takes up 1 cubic meter of space.

Having just come from seeing you-know-what-movie with my wife, I'm thinking about writing up Sparkly Emo Vampire as one variant. All I know for sure is that the SEV has an incompetent opposite-gender human DNPC, who has zero useful skills or noncombat abilities, and gets in trouble very frequently. SEV may also have Psych Lims--Melodramatic and Moody. Romantic Rivalry with Furry Shirtless Werewolf, Distinctive Features(Pale Skinned, Perfect Hair, skin sparkles like diamonds in the bright sunlight). They lack the hypnosis of conventional vampires, but also most of the vulnerabilities are missing. Strong and Fast, pretty much bulletproof. Also, they have a physical limitation on their STR, where they have to make an EGO roll to use less than half their STR during lovemaking. Probably about a 40 STR, 20 total defense, 10 resistant, SPD 5 or 6, running at double or triple human speeds. Climbing. Probably the ability to convert STR damage into killing damage(1/2d6 KA, up to 3d+1 w/STR). That about covers it, I think. Oh, Inexplicably in Love with Insipid, Pathetic, Clingy and Unambitious Teenaged Love Interest(VC, Total).

Did you go because your wife is a hardcore fan of Sparkly Emo Vampires?

The idea of a physical limitation for super-strong individuals is a valid notion. If a superguy can bench press an office building, sex with a normal is a risky proposition.

The name "Superslut" could be off putting even offensive. It doesn't seem particularly appropriate since her powers are based on nudity not promiscuous sexual activity or degradation (unless I've misread). I understand its based on the event in part but it doesn't feel quite "right" for a marginally serious character, just IMO.

Re: The "Essay"(ESSE/UEH) Project(Warning: mature/controversial content contained her

Did you go because your wife is a hardcore fan of Sparkly Emo Vampires?

The idea of a physical limitation for super-strong individuals is a valid notion. If a superguy can bench press an office building, sex with a normal is a risky proposition.

Would that fall under the "Crushing Strength" Limitation in the Ultimate Brick?

Re: The "Essay"(ESSE/UEH) Project(Warning: mature/controversial content contained her

The name "Superslut" could be off putting even offensive. It doesn't seem particularly appropriate since her powers are based on nudity not promiscuous sexual activity or degradation (unless I've misread). I understand its based on the event in part but it doesn't feel quite "right" for a marginally serious character' date=' just IMO.[/quote']

Ms. Slutwalk(er), or Madame Slutwalk(er), perhaps? I dunno, the exhibitionistic aspect may overwhelm that aspect of the character. Side Note: New York State now permits women to go topless, under an equal protection ruling by their highest court. So she could legally fight crime while topless in NY, without having to worry about getting cited for a misdemeanor. I suppose she could walk around scantily clad but without a specific identifier(i.e., incognito), in areas where sexual predators are known to lurk, and beat up and arrest men who attempt to assault her.

Erotic HERO games require an appropriate villain, so here goes.

If you're offended by this character -- good! That's the point. HE'S A BAD GUY!

Interesting. I'm not sure how he brainwashes the women into serving him, though. Should he have some sort of KS: Brainwashing or KS: Slave Training along with a PS, to represent that? Assume that's a very difficult task(-5 to -9, depending on the target's psych complications, strength of personality and so forth) with a long base time(1 week? 1 month? 1 season?), and that the process can be undone with extensive therapy(90 day inpatient, possibly involving medication) or maybe psychic surgery.
