For all of you Coriolis Effect fans

Recommended Posts

I saw in another thread that several people here still remember the Coriolis Effect scenario that was published by the original Hero Games about 20 years ago. Little frightening, isn't it?

In case you didn't know, the adventures of Doctor Arcane, the Black Enchantress, and others are published by the CE author, Dennis Mallonee. You can find old Doctor Arcane stories on his website.

Here's the urls directly from Dennis himself.

The Tales of the Arcane website is at http://arcane.heroicpub.com.

Donnah Hannah (Doctor Arcane's daughter) also makes regular guest appearances on the Flare website at http://flare.heroicpub.com.

The first issues of the new comic books are tentatively scheduled for release in the latter half of 2004. There are sneak previews available to registered users of the Heroic Publishing website: http://www.heroicpub.com.

I am even writing some of the stories coming up in the new comics (just as I wrote the old Marksman series for the same publisher) though I am not doing the Doctor Arcane stories.

20 years ago! Wow, I'm glad I don't remember them from then! ;) I bought mine in a closing down sale of a gaming shop some 15 years ago. :D

I use Coriolis/ Donnah Hannah regularly in my campaign (I've just written her up in 5th- she's a monster!). Dr. Avery may be dead, but he is still able to impart information to Donnah occasionally via a crystal ball. The players hero team uses their mansion as their base now, except I relocated it to outside London.

I really liked the Coriolis Effect , a little rail-roading at times , but it had a distinctive Marv Wolfman/Chris Claremont feel to it. Fun module and it seemed to be a popular one to run for tournaments.

I remember the Champs comics took a weird , softcore-porn approach later on. Not necessarily bad , but seemed a little jarring at the time.

Glad to see I'm not the only person who remembers the Black Enchantress, Donnah/Coriolis, and Doctor Arcane. GREAT adventure and set of NPC's! Whoever di it deserves to be proud.

Two questions here:

Where can I find a copy of 'The Coriolis Effect'? I lost mine years ago, sad to say.

And, of those of you who ran the scenario more or less as written, how many of you used the 'Black Enchantress comes back through a male character's body' idea they recommended? (Poor Bravo... becoming a pretty teenaged girl realy didn't do much for his rep with his biker buddies.) Back when I first read that, it sounded to me like the weirdest thing I could imagine. Today it'd sound downright normal in some game systems. How things change, eh?

If you don't mind ordering on line, there are a couple of VG-quality copies available now at Noble Knight Games, http://www.nobleknight.com . I recommend Noble Knight BTW; class operation, and their stock of new and old Hero Games product is one of the most complete around. :)

A thousand thanks, Lord Liaden.

Now I just hope I can get what I want via money order...

Re: For all of you Coriolis Effect fans

I was just looking through Coriolis Effect. Can anyone explain what Coriolis' "2D6 Area Transformation (into air)" supposed to be? Is she turning targets into air? Is it supposed to be an early Change Environment power?

BTW - That link from the first post is now dead, but you can view archive.org's backup of the pages from that site here:

Steve Perrin? Wow: I loved the column on role-playing games that he wrote in the mid-1980s for this comic book magazine called "Comics Feature." In those pre-internet days, that was how I got all my information on new and upcoming super hero RPG products and really looked forward to it every month.

And Dennis Mallonee? I really, really liked "Eternity Smith" and remain surprised today that it didn't expand beyond the comic book to success in other media, especially to a Saturday morning cartoon.

"Coriolis Effect"? I still have a copy and remember buying it when it was first released. I never got to play it, though, because by the time it was released my friends and I (then high school age) had moved, lemming-like, to playing TSR's "Marvel Super Heroes." I remember it mostly because, when Eclipse published the "Champions" comic book mini-series in 1986, which I bought enthusiastically at first, many of the characters and concepts in the comic book seemed to have had their origins in that module.

As yet another tangent, I was a little disappointed by that "Champions" mini series back in 1986. But then it switched publishers and started with a new #1. I can still remember picking up that new #1 issue with the expectation that I wasn't going to buy it. But there was an editor's note (on the inside cover or first page) by Dennis Mallonee, I think, explaining that he, too, had been disappointed by how the mini-series turned out. I really appreciated his candor, and was very surprised (and impressed) by that. So I started buying the series again and really liked those Herioc Publishing issues.
