Yep. I hate the phrase “Hey' date=' technically, it’s legal!”[/quote']

Yeah, I think I usually prefer illegal but morally acceptable actions to legal but morally reprehensible ones.

That said, we probably do need to evolve our laws and sensibilities around the concept that you are going to be video recorded in HD just about everywhere you go and that the data will exist forever... not a pleasant thought for many, but considering how pervasive the technology is becoming, a shift of one kind or another seems inevitable to me.

Re: Interesting article about Sexism in Geek Communities

I'm can be pretty crass sometimes IRL. And I've been known to hang out in the underbelly of the internet, so I'm well aware of some of the alternate entertainment that elements of this particular fanbase are drawn to...

But at the point where you drop rape jokes and N bombs in the presence of children, you need a serious wake up call. Quite possibly a five fingered one...

This is internet trolling, 4chan browsing, youtube coment wars brought into real life.

Reddit internet troll exposed: http://www.cnn.com/2012/10/18/us/internet-troll-apology/index.html?hpt=hp_c1

Fort Worth, Texas (CNN) -- An internet troll reviled for his pornographic posts on Reddit and recently revealed as a middle-aged software programmer told CNN that he made "a huge mistake."

For years, 49-year-old Michael Brutsch hid behind the online screen name "Violentacrez," creating hundreds of subforums on the user-generated website, such as "Rapebait," "Incest," "Pics of Dead Kids," "Choke a Bitch," and "Rape Jokes." "Violentacrez" has been banned from the site several times, although Brutsch still maintains a separate account.

Re: Interesting article about Sexism in Geek Communities

When I go to cons with lots of cosplayers, I always politely ask if I can take their picture. If they say yes, great! Some polite chit-chat, "Your costume is really great, did you make it yourself? I love that show, she's my favorite character, etc." Once the pic is taken, I thank them for their time, wish them a happy con, and give them a friendly smile. If they want to talk more or hang out (hey, it happens sometimes!) that's great! There's no touching, there's no getting all up in their space, nothing like that. I don't stare at their boobs, leer at them, or say rude things. Costuming is an art form, another type of geekery, and I appreciate the effort they put into it. If they say no, I thank them for their time and move on.

The only time I wouldn't ask permission first is if they're in the costume contest. But I figure if they're up on stage then they won't mind too much (assuming pictures are allowed, which they usually are).

In my experience, if someone is at a con in costume, they WANT people to look at them! Ive never been told "no" when Ive asked to take a picture of someone in costume, except once, when the person in question was running late to get to her next scheduled con event.

"Men were much more attracted to their female friends than vice versa. Men were also more likely than women to think that their opposite-sex friends were attracted to them—a clearly misguided belief. In fact, men’s estimates of how attractive they were to their female friends had virtually nothing to do with how these women actually felt, and almost everything to do with how the men themselves felt—basically, males assumed that any romantic attraction they experienced was mutual, and were blind to the actual level of romantic interest felt by their female friends. Women, too, were blind to the mindset of their opposite-sex friends; because females generally were not attracted to their male friends, they assumed that this lack of attraction was mutual. As a result, men consistently overestimated the level of attraction felt by their female friends and women consistently underestimated the level of attraction felt by their male friends."

Executive summary for men: No, by and large the women you know really aren't attracted to you. I'm sorry.

Executive summary for women: They may or may not ever express it, but yes, the men you know are attracted to you. I'm sorry.

Form experience, however, I can say this from the male perspective of the astronomer involved: If someone of the Other Gender finally accedes to your suggestion that you take that person out at night and show them the stars, that person is likely to be quite irritated when it turns out that that is, in fact, what you had intended to do.

You know, it just occurred to me: Steve Urkel was a creeper:

A lot of songs suffer from the same misconception that if you just keep trying, you can get the girl:

Where do guys get this idea? I know I used to suffer from a mild case of it when I was in my late teens, early 20's.
