Re: Outside the Box powers

the OP has reminded me of an old power, which was a type of Flashie-Thingie from Men In Black (Deneuralizer)

We wrote it up as 12 Dice INT Drain, only versus the topic at hand, or Topic as described by attacker., OIF, Flash Def, etc

So the targeted person would not be able to form any coherent thoughts as regards that subject (aliens among us for example)

He would have -20 INT or so for these purpose, and have to even make an INT roll to think about Aliens

(on an 8 or less, or worse) much less get the story straight.

Technically, the way that is built the effect would only last as long as the Drain. A Transform would work. Another method would be to Drain EGO and then give a verbal command to "Forget". See my version of Wonder Woman's Golden Lasso of Truth for an example of how this could be built:

The Fires of Hestia

13 1) Drain EGO 2d6 (standard effect: 6 points), Area Of Effect (4m Radius; +¼), Reduced Endurance (½ END; +¼), Constant (+½), Penetrating (+½), Delayed Return Rate (points return at the rate of 5 per Minute; +1); Conditional Power Only to force truthful answers from anyone held within the Lasso (From 6e1, page 44: At EGO 0 the character follows all orders given to him from any source unless he succeeds with an EGO Roll.; -1), OAF Unbreakable (Golden Lasso; -1), Limited Power Only usable vs. target(s) grabbed using Golden Lasso (-1), No Range (-½), Concentration, Must Concentrate throughout use of Constant Power (½ DCV; -½), Unified Power (-¼) 3

Just change the Limitations to match the way the MIB device worked.

Re: Outside the Box powers

Invisibility, invisible power effects?

Used that to represent a "you don't notice me leaving the room" spell. The SFX was that that the character still appeared to be in the same place (doing nothing) until range got to great (or dropping the power, which came first in this case).

Interesting! It seem like you are getting a 'Image' power there for free though (and how would it work if there was nobody around?).

Invisibility, invisible power effects --- makes me think that 'The Silence' (from Doctor Who) would have something like this as their defining power :)

Yeah, it was a bit of a stretch. But it was a simple way to represent what I wanted, and since it was a power pool (once-off) power the GM could require a more complicated/expensive build if I tried to use it again.

If I was the GM and a player wanted to use such a power regularly I'd probably require images+invisibility as well.

IPE invisibility is a nice way to represent a "you see me but just don't take any notice of me power". As a GM I could see letting such a character actually interact with people who can't, technically, "see" him - they'll just end up wondering "who did I just talk to?". :)

Re: Outside the Box powers

Killing Attack, No Normal Defense, Invisible Power, Does No STUN.

Since it did neither BODy nor STUN, what did it do? It did Impairing and Disabling (roll the damage and compare for Disabling purposes without actually taking any points off.)

It represented the traditional faerie Elf Stroke or Elf Shot power.

Re: Outside the Box powers

I remember a 4th edition charater I wrote up for an 'english adventure' game. He was named Phantasm, a ansmetic walking corpse who can almost ghost-like go through solid objects if he wanted. Mostly it was the special effect 'he exists in both the living world and the dead world'. Now, the Desolidifation is not that special. But an alxelitary power is. It was described as wraping a thin mist of the land of the dead around the victom so that he is distracted by unearthly shapes, sounds, smells, coldness, ect. Funcionality, it was an Drain INT with the limitation "Only For Preception (PRE) Rolls".

Re: Outside the Box powers

I recently created a mentlist for the upcoming TED Thread/Project named Mentock. Mentock's hook...he can project his mind into the past, and form a body out of mental energies for it. I wrote it up as an Extra-Dimentinal Transport, then added the "Meet Body" Limitation (like the "Enter Cyberspace" example). Note: Most of his mental powers have the parital limitation "Only Usable In The Past". Also note, 'Past' is limited to the 20th centery up to the 31st centery (takeing time off for when there are low mana periods of time).

Re: Outside the Box powers

I have a character named Sassafras Jackson' date=' A.K.A. Super-Pimp. He has an Ego Attack that causes extreme sexual pleasure in the target. He's been known to use the power outside of combat...if you know what I mean.[/quote']

We had a Ecstasy weapon type attack that was built as a ECV Based Entangle linked to a small Continuous Endurance Drain.

Re: Outside the Box powers

I've mentioned this a few times before, but I think Multiform would be a good way of simulating powers.

Let's say you're playing 5th Edition with 250 Points characters with a 60 Active Points limit.

Bruce Wayne has the Money: Filthy Rich and a 4x 250 Point Multiform (cost 60 Points) for his Batman, Batmobile, Batplane, and Batboat. The special effect is those vehicles are in the Batcave waiting to be called for. Batman is the True Form, so he gets the experience points. Bruce would also get experience points from time to time so the character can grow on two levels.

Re: Outside the Box powers

Any use of a Power that is counter to its obvious or 'standard' special effect.

examples:

  1. Teleportation used to represent 'moving faster than the eye can see' (as opposed to using Invisibility linked to movement) instead of the typical 'teleportation' sfx.
  2. Density Increase to represent a form of the power of flight that is of such a high power that it literally enhances STR, KB resistance, defenses, etc... but doesn't use a 'density' sfx.
  3. Overall Levels as a form of 'superspeed' purchased as a Power (usually with a form of the Costs END Limitation) instead of a 'skill' based sfx.

Re: Outside the Box powers

The character Stopwatch has Several Overall Skill levels to represent that she can stop time and so take all the "Extra Time" she wants when she uses certain Skills. She can even "rewind" and undo mistakes with considerable effort. These levels cost Endurance and have Charges, truly stopping time is arduous for her and hard to to repeatedly. There's also certain Skills (like some Interaction skills) that the levels won't work with (or at least not as well). The power is called "All the Time in the World."

Re: Outside the Box powers

The funniest "outside the box" power we've used wasn't even a power. The character looked like a typical anime catgirl (furry, triangular ears on top of her head, little fangs, etc). But despite this and that she wore no disguise of any kind and the game world was essentially the normal world (no widely known aliens, mutants or supernatural creatures) Few people noticed or commented on her unusual looks...

The character didn't have a Distinctive Features Disad or any other Disadvantage relating to her appearance. So we ran it as peope either just somehow didn't think about her appearance or rationalized it ("Wow, what a great costume!...but I thought Halloween was next week..."). Admittedly this was a very light hearted campaign.

Miniaturized Tools; Stored in Helmet Compartments (25 AP); ~

2 [ Notes: Various Useful Implements: Jaws of Life, Laser Cutter, Grappling Gun, Shark Repellent, SpotLight, Heavy Drill, Jackhammer,

and all that batman shyte. Each is One-Use only, 10 minutes or so. previously shrunk with Pym particles back at the base.]

Uses Inventor Skill;

from Ant-Man; he'd carry a pocket full of "useful items" and then unshrink one as needed.

mundane stuff, but bulky. Like to cut open a sewer pipe, pop a vault door, light up the whole sky.

The skill roll represented "did he have the right item" pre-shrunk or not.
