Pariah
Today's New Topic: Three Songs about Boats/Ships 1. "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot, about a cargo ship that sank in high winds on Lake Superior 2. "So Far from the Clyde" by Mark Knopfler, about the death of a ship in an Indian wrecking yard 3. "Calypso" by John Denver, about Jacques Cousteau's famous research ship Bonus selection: "The Mayflower" by Jon and Vangelis, which is actually about two ships: the historic Mayflower that brought pilgrims to North America, and a futuristic ship of the same name that takes settlers out into the stars. death tribble
I'll start with a famous one that became indelibly linked with the aircraft carrier Ark Royal when it was used as the theme music for the series Sailor Rod Stewart and Sailing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ooq7WPqd5s The Pogues and the Dubliners The Irish Rover and a think I can get away with this
Ternaugh
1. "The Downeaster 'Alexa'" by Billy Joel. 2. "Sink the Bismark" by Johnny Horton. 3. "Sailing" by Christopher Cross.
Cancer
Three trios here. First, major pop songs, two of them title cuts from albums, all of them on my iPod. 1. The title cut from Heart's "Dreamboat Annie" debut album 2. The title cut from Randy Newman's "Sail Away" album 3. The Beatles' "Yellow Submarine" Second, some older ones.... 1. "On The Good Ship Lollipop" as performed by Shirley Temple et al. 2. "Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)", Harry Belafonte's trademark piece 3. "Sloop John B" by the Beach Boys Third, a melange of others. 1. "If I Had A Boat" by Lyle Lovett 2. "Down the Dolce Vita" by Peter Gabriel 3. "Ride Captain Ride" by the one-hit wonder Blues Image Interestingly, there isn't a good candidate in this theme for what I consider to be an obligatory John Fogerty/CCR song. BoneDaddy
"'39," from Queen's "A Night at the Opera." "Shipping Up to Boston", by the Dropkick Murphys "Wooden Ships", by Crosby Stills and Nash I don't recommend this as a music set, but they are my three favorite songs that mention ships. Gah, of course Proud Mary. Only on a very abstract level do I recognize that as a ship reference, though.
