bigbywolfe
I am making a superhero orangutan for a player (an associate of Dr. Silverback). What would you consider the average Strength of a full grown male orangutan? The Hero System Bestiary puts a Gorilla at 25 and a Chimpanzee at 18, while Dr. Silverback has 28. I've found references to orangutan's having "the strength of 7 men" while gorilla's are attributed the strength of anywhere from 8-20 men. Since this is for a super hero game, and more over for an exceptional PC, accuracy/realism is not really that important, but I would like to know what you think for a more realistic build as well. For a heroic level "realistic" game, how much difference is there between an orangutan and the Bestiary's gorilla? EDIT: Personally I was thinking an orangutan would have STR in the 20-23 range and better climbing than a gorilla. Any other obvious changes? pruttm
I don't know why anymore, but I set my orangutan at 20.

mhd
I'd regard most reports that use the unit "of X men" as apocryphal, but it's not like this hasn't been measured more extensively (and recently). I think the current conclusion is that pound by pound, chimps are about twice as strong as humans on average, with some wide variance depending on how you define "strength". They also seem to be pretty bat at controlling that strength and don't have as much muscular endurance as humans (HackMaster pack gorillas probably excepted). Orang-Utans seem to have comparable strength, but weigh a bit more, so I'd go with the straight weight ratio there (for males: chimps/70kg, orangutans/110kg, gorillas/160kg). So 20/21 seems like a pretty good approximation if you want to be in line with the HSB statistics (which generally err towards the cinematic/high end/alphas). bigbywolfe
Thanks for the input everyone. mhd, 21 does sound about right for average and would put them just above peak human in most heroic settings, so I like that. I think I might still use 23 for a really big male or in a higher power game. The sentient orangutan mentioned in the OP has a STR of 25. He works out. EDIT: And he rides a Segway. This is going to be an interesting game...
