Christopher R Taylor
Yeah each expansion they overpromise for WoW. I remember well all the stuff they said was coming in Outlands and didn't come remotely close to delivering. Its been the same each expansion, often misleading and sometimes just "well we couldn't get to that."
Pattern Ghost
I'm fine with the occasional "we couldn't do that" or running out of time issue. WoD took under-delivery to a whole new level, though.
Christopher R Taylor
They did pack it with a lot of stuff, to be fair. Its huge, and they just added a ton of new content. There's as much to do in this expansion as in the original WoW release, I think

Christopher R Taylor
I keep expecting bugs, as in the bugs from Silithus, to return. There's that big disasterous foretelling by the Prince in Pandaria then... nothing came of it.

Pattern Ghost
Woot! They've achieved Vanilla subscriber numbers with WoD! This week's announcement should be interesting, since they promised their shareholders that they've been listening to the players and hinted the new expansion should suck people back in. I'm wondering what they've got up their sleeves. I guess the report solves the mystery of why they're announcing the next expac before Blizzcon. Probably as much to show the shareholders what they have as it is for the players.
Pattern Ghost
To be fair, if you take out the big spike at the beginning of WoD, the chart looks to be a fairly normal distribution curve and typical for most MMOs. The fact that it's taken this long to dip to the five millions is pretty impressive.

Pattern Ghost
First impressions: Doesn't look like they're promising the moon this time, so maybe they'll actually deliver. Still trading on past expansion nostalgia. I guess "listening to the players" means that they heard that WotLK was far better than WoD, so they're tossing in some token Vrykul stuff. Still only two raid tiers. Not seeing much to do at cap, and expect they'll see the same rapid drop off in subs as they did in WoD. Every player being their class's leader is a new level of ridiculous; at least in WoD we could pretend we were a commander of a subset of the forces, even though we were supposed to be the invasion commander. Now, we'll have class halls for our class orders that we're the leaders of . . . and every other PC in the area is also the leader of. WTF? It seems like they've totally missed the point of what made past expansions successful, and are again focusing on features and not so much on story and content. I hope to be proven wrong. I made notes on the whole thing, will type those up in a while. Have to do some errands/lunch first.
Pattern Ghost
I found a features summary on gamespot, that includes details not mentioned in the presentation. Pattern Ghost
OK, so I took notes, so I'm going to transcribe them. Naturally, some of it will be repeats of information already mentioned. Some info will be out of presentation order due to presenters mentioning one thing in another thing's section during presentation. I'll try to keep the commentary to the minimum: Overview The expansion will be titled World of Warcraft: Legion. Gul'dan will be the bridge to the expansion, and the cause of the largest Burning Legion invasion of Azeroth to date. The new continent will be the Broken Isles. Level cap will go to 110. Demon Hunter will be the new class. Artifact Weapons will be introduced right off the bat. The Alliance and the Horde will be at each other's throats, and Class Orders will lead the joint effort to deal with the Burning Legion. Nessingwary is back. Valera and Turalyon: "Their time is here." Broken Isles Map shows 9 new zones. Night Elf graveyard. Tomb of Sargeras is here, and is the route in for the Burning Legion. The Broken Shore seems to be the pre-launch event. Made hype noises about the awesomeness of the pre-launch event. We'll be chasing down McGuffins (Pillars of Creation) needed to defeat the Burning Legion. They seem to be a one per zone storyline idea, but see below. Dalaran will be the capital. It's being moved to the Isles. Artifacts There will be 36 weapons, one for each spec (that's the 34 existing specs, plus the 2 specs Demon Hunters will have) Doing a quest to recover an artifact weapon in an appropriate area will be the first thing you do. The artifacts will level with the characters. You earn Artifact Power to level them. Artifact Power is spent on unlocking traits. Artifacts can be customized with a talent tree. (I think this is a choice of which traits to slot.) Showed a graphic of an artifact weapon with a series of squares to slot traits in, like a talent tree. Weapon graphics can be customized. Druids will have customized FORMS based on their weapon's graphic.Only mentioned cats and bears, but not boomkins or trees. Form models are updated to high res versions mentioned in passing. The Survival Hunter weapon is a SPEAR. (This begs the question: Is Survival becoming a melee spec or are spears becoming throwable weapons?) Class Orders Each class will have an order, like the DKs already have. For example, Paladins will have the Silver Hand. YOU will be the leader of your class order. There will be a big focus on class identity. Each Order will have Order Halls as bases of operations, a public area like Archerus for only members of that class. There will be a big focus on class identity. Champions Champions are the evolution of the follower system. There will be fewer, but they will be more meaningful. PCs are not raising an army this time. There will be more integration with the world. Champions will enable you to do stuff instead of do stuff for you.Example: A scout may go find an area that your character has to go deal with. Example: Having certain followers in a zone may give bonuses to your character. Champions will be found in Order Halls. Dungeons & Raids Essential to the WoW experience. There will be more of them. They will have more challenge. They will have more replayability. When describing a dungeon, said that one of the Pillars of Creation will be in it. They thought the number of raids and bosses in them was good in WoD. Six dungeons listed. (Doesn't gel with point 2, above. Maybe plan to release some later?) Two raids mentioned, following the WoD format: The Emerald Nightmare 7 bosses Cenarius and Xavius will be found here. Suramar (these are the new evil BL-aligned elf race) Palace 10 bosses Gul'Dan and the Nightwell (source of Suramar elf power) will be found here. Demon Hunter Hero Class. Will start at high level to get to the action faster. Level not given. (I suspect they'll exit their start area at level 90.) Two specs: Havoc (DPS) and Vengeance (Tank) Character creation will include choices for horn style, eye covering style, skin textures (showed a very rough-scaled to more normal range; the rough scaled one looked like rocks poking out of the shoulders), tattoos. They'll have a starting area and questline similar to Death Knights. Their story starts with Illidan sending them on a mission during the Black Temple raid. They'll end up in jail in Mar'dun (sp) and be awoken by the cloaked owl-headed elf order (forget name, sorry) that Maiev belongs to, to help out with the Burning Legion invasion. Resource is called Demonic Fury and has builders and spenders. A signature skill mentioned is Spectral Sight, which lets them see through walls, and see invisible and stealthed enemies. Mentioned it will be useful in PVP. Another unique ability will be double jumping. (Wildstar says "Hi") PVP Honor System This is Version 3. Progression will be through 50 Ranks. As you level up, you'll unlock PVP-only talents. The talents will unlock from the top down, giving early access to the more powerful of them. There will be Prestige Ranks, gained by resetting your ranks to 1 and grinding back up to 50 again. (DDO says "Hi.") Prestige Ranks will let you unlock purely cosmetic perks:Portrait badges (DDO says "Hi again!") Mounts Artifact appearances. Didn't mention gearing. Christopher R Taylor
I like the idea of survival warriors being melee rather than range, and hunting with a pet and a spear has a real primal feel to it.
