Acroyear II
Hi all, Can anyone tell me the first time King Cobra and Black Mamba appeared in a Champions product, and what year those books debuted? I do not own any of the first three Enemies books, but I do own Classic Enemies, which has write-ups for both characters. But I think those two characters were published before that book came out. While I'm thinking of it, I would pose the same question for Boa Constrictor, one of King Cobra's super powered henchmen.
rravenwood
The original Enemies book (published 1981, then in a revised edition in 1982) contains Black Mamba and Cobra (I'm not sure if King Cobra is the same as Cobra - Cobra's real name is Dr. TImothy Blank, if that helps). Boa Constrictor appeared in Adventurers Club #2 (the Winter 1983 issue).
Cassandra
Black Mamba showed up in the 4th Edition VIPER supplement. Cobra was renamed King Cobra in the 4th edition Enemies book.
bubba smith
most likely to avoid confusion with GI JOE
Acroyear II
Awesome. Thanks everyone. Yes, I recall that King Cobra first appeared as Cobra, then later added "King" to his name. Perhaps that was when he formed COIL? At any rate, thanks again for the information.
Greywind
Most likely his ego got inflated somewhere.
wcw43921
Cobra's organization was originally called C.O.B.R.A.--which according to the entry for Mongoose (ENEMIES, p. 19) stands for Corporate Organization for the Benevolent Return to Autocracy. It was changed to the COIL with the publication of CLASSIC ENEMIES--most likely, as bubba smith said, to avoid confusion with GI JOE. Hope that helps. Greywind
I'm basing off him adding "king" to his moniker. He got his ego inflated.
steriaca
Ok...how would you add Black Mamba and Mongoose into the modern Champions Universe? Here is my take. Black Mamba: An assistant to Doctor Bank in VIPER, he was transformed against his will, and seeing that he wasn't under his control, was literary placed in 'cold storage'. VIPER found and awaken him, and he became a loyal dragon branch member, as long as they dangle an attempt to cure him in front of his face from time to time. Mongoose: A VIPER grunt and martial artist who volunteer for a gean splicing experment by a certain other VIPER scientist. His nature makes him ideal to face COIL. Cassandra
Mongoose was more a vigilante who was the victim of Cobra, and who dedicated his life to bringing COIL down. He might have fought Black Mamba when he was working for King Cobra, but might work with him once he started working for VIPER. Mongoose on the other hand might see Black Mamba as corrupt as King Cobra, just a snake of another kind. This would be a good street level campaign where the Hero Group encounters all three characters during it's adventures. COIL agents try to kidnap someone or steal a valuable object, and Black Mamba fights them. The Heroes track down a COIL group to a safe house and find Mongoose there, the COIL agents defeated. Is Mongoose an ally, or a dangerous vigilante who has to be brought to justice? King Cobra goes after the Heroes, and when the reveal the truth about Black Mamba's family turn him against King Cobra.
