[Police brutality] American injustice, yet again.

Just saw this article from the end of November about St. Louis police officers allegedly beating an undercover officer and then trying to cover it up

Quoting from the article (under spoilers because of expletives partially redacted)

The indictment also details text messages between Myers and Boone in which they talk about how much fun it will be to beat "the hell out of these s**theads once the sun goes down and no one can tell us" apart.

Most of the text messages in the indictment between Myers, Boone and Hays include expletives.

"We really need these f**kers to start acting u(p) so we can have some fun," Boone texted, after they determined they were going to be on the same team.

"A lot of cops getting hurt, but it's still a blast beating people that deserve it," said another text from Boone.

I was not aware that some prosecutors overcharge police officers guilty of manslaughter/murder as a tactic to get them off scot-free (or at least with only an absurdly minor charge to their name).

Happens all the time.

Tangentially, Amy Klobuchar failed to charge this exact cop with any wrongdoing when he gunned down another civilian on 2006 while she was serving as prosecutor.

Congress can pass a law that overrides or overwrites some of the now clearly excessive protections for police officers found in union contracts.  The DOJ can sue cities in order to set up consent decrees regarding police conduct.  They could even tie federal funds to standardized mental health/personality and background screening processes for police and sheriffs departments.  And Congress could end or curb qualified immunity for police officers as well.  Really, all it takes is(in practice) for 60% of white people and 60% of white politicians to agree that this is a serious problem worth a lasting, effective solution, and let the chips fall where they may.

The simple fix is to require all police to carry individual malpractice insurance policies. Settlements for wrongful deaths etc. get paid by insurance companies and the premiums pay them in advance. Of course, once an individual has proven to be a bad risk, expect the premiums to rise accordingly...

Personal police cameras should be standard across the board, full stop; penalties for turning these cameras off and diverting (or blocking) their field of vision should be harsh. In fact, chronic offenders should be fired...their actions are a contravention of law meant to ensure public accountability. Also, the act of threatening citizens that are filming policing in action is no longer to be tolerated.

Agreed, although that apparently wouldn't have mattered in this case.

African-American congresswoman pepper-sprayed during racism protest

Quote

Beatty said she witnessed Columbus police pull a man from the crowd and slam him to the ground. She said she rushed over to the scene to try to deescalate the situation. Beatty, wearing a red face mask, was in the middle of the chaotic scene with officers, according to several videos of the incident.

“I just felt like maybe I could protect her,” Beatty said in a telephone interview, referring to the female protester. “I’m trying to push the bike away and get her into a safe space, and the next thing I know pepper spray is everywhere.”

Several officers used pepper spray on the protesters, including Beatty and Hardin, according to the video footage. The two can later be seen trying to recover. Referring to police, Beatty can be heard exclaiming, "They are wrong, they are wrong!”
