18 counts. I saw his inmate profile card. There were no other convictions on it. Truthfully, I saw it as you did. You work in a prison where murder is almost trite and having a guy with Wearing an Unauthorized Ribbon in there seemed odd. Still, it happened and makes for a quirky story. As to his deflection of personal responsibility, he was an inmate. I determined early on that you can easily tell when an inmate lies; he opens his yap and sounds come out. We used to have a running joke that when an inmate approached us and started out with "Yo Sarge, check this out...." anything after that was a lie.

Let us return to the topic at hand

So here is what I would like to suggest everyone post as an introduction:

  • How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)?
  • What was the first tabletop RPG you played?
  • What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed?
  • What are you currently playing/GMing?

I hope this thread gets pinned.

Not exactly new, but I was only a little more than a lurker when I first joined, and haven't been around in months, since my last HERO game fell through a couple sessions in.

How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)?

-- Originally, it was the Surname of a minor character, Felix Tholomyes, from Victor Hugo's Les Miserables, which has been one of my favorite books since I was in middle school. I first started using it, however, due to the first one-shot game of D&D I played, where I came up with the character at the last minute, and had to think of some name that sounded good and somewhat memorable, and I've stuck with the handle since.

What was the first tabletop RPG you played?

-- I did a play-by-Forum game of second edition Mutants and Masterminds, when I didn't really have a gaming group around me, but my first face to face RPG I played was D&D 3.5. Having already played M&M, It was honestly a bit of a disappointment, since I'd gotten accustomed to the freedom of point buy and the more solidly scaling system math, but it was the default, if only by name recognition, so it's what people played.

What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed?

-- I GMed a Pathfinder game that didn't last more than a couple sessions, more or less due to my disinterest in the system (I could play it fine, though with some inner grumblings that it wasn't my first choice, but I discovered that GMing is a lot more work when you really don't have much interest in the system). The first fully off-the-ground game I GMed was a HERO Firefly game.

What are you currently playing/GMing?

Most recently played D&D 5e. Currently trying to get a Champions game off the ground, but I'm hitting scheduling problems, and, If I'm lucky, I can meet with everyone to work on characters before then, so the first session isn't just: "Ok, let me make all four of your characters for you".

  • How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)? Its my handle forma hockey forum where I have been active for, uhhh...a long time. A "Double minor" is commonly astick infraction that causes loss of blood and/or chicklets. 138 is from the Misfits "We Are 138".
  • What was the first tabletop RPG you played? Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, 1st Edition.
  • What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed? Same.
  • What are you currently playing/GMing? Pathfinder (running two games, playign in two games) and Hero System 5th Edition (starting that sucker back up)

...wow. Yeah. doubleminor138 is not my handle here. It's my handle everywhere else, basically. Thank Grond Its Friday.

Shigeru was the name of my NPC samurai in my long-running jidai-geki Hero Game. He died.

 Returning after a long time.

How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)

During college I had a job which included coming in on weekends and running Virex and pulling all the porn off of the various work stations. There was a group who came in for LAN parties gaming  Lucasarts X-Wing combat flight sim. We all had call signs based on our squadron,: Red Leader, Red 2, etc. Since I was in every weekend I got good and after I got lucky and took out a particularly tough Imperial Ace one of the guys gave me the nickname. Also I'm a redhead.

What was the first tabletop RPG you played?

D&D 2nd edition.

What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed?

The same guy who introduced me to D&D had a homebrewed superhero game based on D&D mechanics. I took it over to give him a break.

What are you currently playing/GMing?

Playing: Trail of Cthulhu

Running: Prepping for a 6th ed, Champions campaign based around a super team working for UNTIL.

  • How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)?

Easy -- it's my given name.

  • What was the first tabletop RPG you played?

I had looked at several RPGs owned by one of my cousins in the middle of the Eighties -- Runequest, Stormbringer, Elfquest -- but the first I actually played was Äventyrsspel's Drakar och demoner, the third edition (I think). I bought it some time around New Year's '87-'88. Drakar och demoner at that time was basically the Chaosium Basic Roleplaying system translated into Swedish. Much fun was had with it. I bought almost everything (slight hyperbole) that Target Games/Äventyrsspel published, like the Expert and Gigant and Magi expansion sets, the Ereb Altor campaign setting, adventure modules like Mörkrets hjärta  -- I still have most of it left, I think, in storage.

  • What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed?

DoD. I was the designated GM. I had no handle on things, really -- one character, a Dwarf, got so strong (mis-)using Hero Points rules that he could easily wrestle dragons with one hand. I had a giant step on him between adventures and made the player roll up a new character. He was not pleased.

  • What are you currently playing/GMing?

Nothing. I haven't played since I moved north from Umeå five years ago, but I hope to some day have a use for my campaign settings. Using Hero.

How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)?

My name is David. My college era gaming group called me "Dave Man" and then "D-Man" when they got lazy. I do not know why. It was stupid. Embracing this pointless nickname, my handle back on the Cybergames boards and then the Hero boards and then these here resurrected Hero boards was D-Man.

However, back during the flame-wars of old (today is weak tea compared to 2003-2005) I led a coalition of like-minded flame-war disrupting and derailing dastards under the moniker of Von D-Man, the monocole doffing, hessian boot wearing, kaisereich uniform wearing, bad German accent wielding Supreme Leader of PAID in Full. Whenever the flame warriors gave up and surrendered a thread (and boo-hoo'd at me in whiny private messages) we informed them they had been "Paid in Full."

Yet, someone took to abbreviating Von D-Man as VD-Man and, well, no thank you. Since ScubaHERO had taken to referring to me as "Von-D," and occasionally "Vondy," I asked Simon to change my handle to Vondy. It has been thus for years on end now.

What was the first tabletop RPG you played?

The blue-covered1977 Dungeons and Dragon boxed set. It was 1979. I was 7.

I played a ton of early games, however, and I loved a lot of them.

What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed?

Same.

What are you currently playing/GMing?

I have been running FFG Star Wars, but last week converted the characters to Hero 5th.

I have a street-level TAS style Hero game I want to run in the near future.

When did you start to play Hero?

I first played Hero in 1983, but didn't settle on it as my system of choice until 1991.

Thank you for the welcome. I'm using the 6th Edition PDFs. Right now, I'm still working on getting the framework for my setting laid out. I do need to create some of the more important NPC's, though, which is part of why I'm here. I hope I can pick up some tips on worldbuilding and on creating memorable & unique NPCs.

How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)?

-Boll Weevil is one of my first Champions characters, a not-based-on-anyone character that can cling to walls and shoot webs that catch thieves just like flies.

I have been on the boards here since 2000. I lurk frequently but haven't posted much lately.

What was the first tabletop RPG you played?

D&D boxed set in 1981.

What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed?

Champions. I think my first real game other than combat on the included map (with Rosie's Diner!) was the Target Hero supplement. I've never been great at GMing, to be honest, but many times it was the only way to get my friends to play.

What are you currently playing/GMing?

Nothing currently. My local gaming group broke up years ago and I haven't played since the demise of Hero Central.

  • 2 weeks later...

I also believe that Killer.Shrike also had some relevant cyberpunk-ish setting stuff on one of his websites. And with a quick look, it would seem to be named "Meta Cyber". It has been a very long time since I read through all that material but it was some great stuff. He had a variety of characters and equipment built along with some character creation guides. The last time I was thinking of running a game (many a year ago now), I was thinking of using his MetaCyber or 'Here there be monsters' setting - a setting where I even manage to contribute one (or two?**) characters to. All very good stuff!

Speaking of K.S, is he active under another handle these days or just not active on the forums at all anymore? I can't say I have seen him around for at least a couple years and probably more.

Soar.

**I stand corrected. I made 4 published contributions. That said, KS did a lot of touch up work to make then better. ^^

Hey Rose, I'm still alive and kicking. eepjr has inspired me lately to revisit the HERO material by persistently grinding through Fantasy HERO material, and I've been making some mechanical improvements to the site here and there, so I still have a hand in the HERO jar but I'm no where as active as I once was.

Long story short, my wife and I had another baby a couple of years ago, and that, plus work, other kid, etc, I just don't have the free time I used to have. I started using Fate and Fate Accelerated for my (seldom) game sessions mostly due to the greatly lessened time it takes to work up material.

I still love the HERO System and it is still my favorite game system of all time. Just, y'know, life happens. ;)

  • How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)?

Long story short, it was my handle for Mechwarrior a very long time ago, that I then used to replace a different handle I had used for years that I discovered was very similar to one used by a hacker with a bad reputation. It just sort of became my net persona, unintentionally.

  • What was the first tabletop RPG you played?

Actual table top was D&D Red Box; I was 10. But my real intro to the hobby was Joe Dever's Lone Wolf; if that hadn't of hooked me I would not have been interested when the opportunity to play D&D was offered.

  • What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed?

Also D&D Red Box.

  • What are you currently playing/GMing?

My Pathfinder Fate Accelerated hack, though on an extremely spread out schedule. We play every now and then when the stars align, usually in bursts of a few sessions. Over the last year I've also played in some one offs of Edge of Empire, Pathfinder, and Marvel Heroic Roleplaying, and we play a lot of board and card games. Netrunner, Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, Warhammer Quest, Descent, Sentinels of the Multiverse, and Smashup most recently. I'm currently looking forward to the new Netrunner Mainframe board game, and the Sentinels of the Multiverse Oblivaeon kickstarter.

  • How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)?

Let's pretend it's my name mashed to fit into eight characters.

  • What was the first tabletop RPG you played?

Who can remember? Probably AD&D for a few sessions, but I really got into RPGs after playing Champions (4e).

  • What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed?

I think it was Champions, but it could have been Fantasy Hero. Something in the Hero System (4e).

  • What are you currently playing/GMing?

Playing: D&D (4e) and New World of Darkness

    GM'ing: D&D (4e)

I have no motivation to move to the next edition of D&D, so when my current D&D campaign is over, I'm planning to run Champions again (6e this time). Watching the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Arrow/Flash has made me eager to return to my roots.

  • How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)?

Durzan Malakim is the name of a Dungeons & Dragons Online character that I have ported over to several other games. I've grown so used to being "Durz" online it felt only natural to continue the tradition here.

  • What was the first tabletop RPG you played?

Although I recall owning a copy of the 1977 Dungeons & Dragons basic set, I think I actually first played Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. As others have noted, it's often easier to indulge in the meta-game of character creation than to actually find and play in games.

  • What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed?

I first GMed in college by running a game of GURPS Space where the plot was going to be inspired by (read: shamelessly stolen from) Dan Simmon's Hyperion novel. The PCs were supposed to travel from Earth to Mars to investigate some alien artifacts & ruins. Instead, the game became a Mutiny-on-the-Bounty scenario when the ship's PC captain used her socially-unacceptable psionic powers to uncover an NPC's secret involvement in a past murder. After ordering the NPC detained without cause, the other PC's thought she had gone mad and plotted to remove her. Oh the places PCs go...

  • What are you currently playing/GMing?

I'm a player in a game of The Strange, where I cross into alternate realities and try to prevent the world from being devoured by cosmic-scale abominations. No pressure.

I'm also in the process of joining a Champions 6E game run by Steve. I look forward to putting on the costume again and rolling lots of D6.

  • When did you start to play Hero?

I ran across the third(?) edition of Champions and fell in love with it. It was the one with this cover.

I'm not especially new, but I haven't hit the actual game-related sections of the forums a lot lately due to not really actively playing anything. So, here I go:

  • How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)?

It's an old AIM handle I used to keep up with my -- wait for it -- Amber Diceless group. It comes from Roger Zelazny's Amber series. I'd give the detailed explanation of what a Pattern Ghost is, but it's a bit complicated. I'll attempt a short version:

Amber is one pole of Reality, the other being the Courts of Chaos. Between them lie infinite parallel universes known as Shadows. Denizens of Amber and Chaos are "real" people (at least to their point of view) and possess abilities and powers greater than most Shadow people. Each pole has a mystical construct/intelligence that can confer a certain level of control over Shadow to those who traverse them. In Amber, that construct is the Pattern, which is essentially a pattern etched into the ground. When an Amberite walks the Pattern, they are tested mentally and physically. If they don't die, their blood becomes imprinted with an image of the Pattern, and they gain the ability to travel in and manipulate Shadow.

This imprint is a two way street. The Pattern retains an imprint of the walker and can use that imprint to make a living copy of that person, a Pattern Ghost. A Pattern Ghost must draw power from the Pattern or drink Pattern-imprinted blood or die. Since the Pattern only uses the ghosts as tools, those that want to live and be independent need to find a source of Pattern-imprinted blood.

It all makes a lot more sense in the context of the novels.

  • What was the first tabletop RPG you played?

Red Box Dungeons and Dragons, what the OSR grognards are now calling B/X D&D. That was 1981. Moved on to AD&D rather quickly because that's what most of the other kids were playing at the time.

  • What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed?

Some 1st Edition AD&D, though I usually prefer to play rather than GM.

  • What are you currently playing/GMing?

Nothing at the moment. I keep toying with the idea of running a FASERIP or B/X D&D PBEM or PBP campaign, using old modules, but never get around to it.

  • When did you start to play Hero?

I played a lot of Marvel FASERIP from '88 to '91 when I was in the Army in Berlin. The group used to play Champions, and had the very book there's a picture of in durzanmalakim's post above. We played a bit with it then, but I didn't start playing Hero until much later, playing PBEM with 4th Edition in the middle '90's.

I'm happy I found this post.

How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)?

I'll happily detail it if someone asks. For now I'll just say: High School

What was the first tabletop RPG you played?

D&D 3.0. Fighter + greatsword = many dead goblins. I was very easy to please back then

What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed?

D&D 3.5? I was not very good at GMing back then.

My first successful GMing was with Pathfinder and Mutants and Masterminds second edition.

What are you currently playing/GMing?

Working on translating Pathfinder material into Hero System. I love Killershrike's site. I don't think I would be converting stuff without him.

D&D, of course. Still have the Bloodstone Wars modules.

  • What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed?

D&D, of course. Then Greyhawk, Ravenloft and Spelljammer flavors, and from then onto other games.

I'm a huge Zelazny geek, but I never made that connection!
