DC Movies- if at first you don't succeed...

I don't see why they just don't do live action versions of Injustice and Injustice 2.

To my mind, the impact of those games comes from taking the essence of the heroes we're so familiar with from the comics, and warping them in ways that make them disturbing to watch. Many moviegoers aren't really familiar with many of these characters, or at least the modern incarnations of them, outside of the movies. I believe they need to be established first before we can successfully go the Injustice route. (The way the DCEU has gone about establishing them is a different and huge discussion.)

I have never understood why comic book movies don't use the established, excellent comic book materials.  They're basically storyboarded movies. Why not use the good stuff?

As much as I love the comics, I don't believe everything that works in them works as well in a live-action movie. Some things need to be adapted to a different medium. Also, the cultural background and expectations of the audience may have changed since those stories were first published.

I believe the Captain America: Civil War movie was a really good example. The world that the previous Marvel movies had set up was not the same as the comic-book Marvel Universe, and the issue at the core of this movie was different from the original Civil War series, with congruence toward what's happening in the real world. But the fundamental conflict of the series -- true heroes deeply divided and ultimately going to war over sincere and understandable differences toward their responsibilities in the world -- carried over into the movie.

I suppose I just think that the Injustice and Injustice 2 cut scene movies have been more entertaining then DC has put out so far.  Of course that's true of DC Superhero Girls as well.

As mush as I liked the most of the Marvel movies the universe has so many plot holes the Incredible Hulk could walk through carrying a Quinjet.

Well, obviously the change in medium requires a change in some of the storytelling, that goes without saying in any film from original material.  But they're going beyond that into simply making films vaguely based on something they remembered from the stories.  Civil War is a perfect example: its got the basic theme of Iron Man vs Captain America, and teams of superheroes fighting over government registration.... and that's it.  Mind you I thought the Civil War comic book story was crap so I don't care if they manhandle it in the movie.

DC has done really well turning comic books into animated features with minor changes to the story because of medium shift, while using excellent, well-received, and acclaimed comic book stories.  It just seems idiotic to not use what you have as stories and build a film around that instead of rewriting everything entirely.  I get that the marvel team in charge right now has little but contempt for everything but their Ultimate universe version, but still... so many great stories to tell.  Its like making James Bond movies, but starting with your own stories and ignoring the books.

I strongly disagree with that first statement. Unquestionably some elements of the Ultimate universe have been brought into the MCU, notably Nick Fury and Hawkeye; and there have been some departures from the traditions of the mainstream Marvel comics, such as Asgardians being aliens (which to be fair, the mainstream comics also retconned them that way for a while).

However, in style and tone, the essence of the MCU has been much closer to the mainstream, more positive and optimistic, than the grim and cynical flavor of the Ultimates. Captain America in particular has been the idealistic, inspirational hero he was portrayed as for decades, rather than the jingoist jarhead Ultimate version.

Not for nothing but I thought the World War One scene in Sucker Punch was a lot cooler then in Wonder Woman.

And in reality after three years of trench warfare, exhaustion, and poison gas the American Army in 1917 looked like a lot of hot women with weapons from the future to the British, French, and especially the Germans.

ummm...that IS the James Bond movies.

When I wrote the first one in 1953, I wanted Bond to be an extremely dull, uninteresting man to whom things happened; I wanted him to be a blunt instrument ... when I was casting around for a name for my protagonist I thought by God, [James Bond] is the dullest name I ever heard.

Is that the James Bond we see on the Silver Screen?

On Dr. No,

Major elements from the novel that are missing from the film include Bond's fight with a giant squid, and the escape from Dr. No's complex using the dragon-disguised swamp buggy.

Elements of the novel that were significantly changed for the film include the use of a (non-venomous) tarantula spider instead of a centipede; Dr. No's secret complex being disguised as a bauxite mine instead of a guano quarry; Dr. No's plot to disrupt NASA space launches from Cape Canaveral using a radio beam instead of disrupting US missile testing on Turks Island; the method of Dr. No's death by boiling in overheating reactor coolant rather than a burial under a chute of guano, and the introduction of SPECTRE, an organisation absent from the book.

Components absent from the novel but added to the film include the introduction of the Bond character in a gambling casino, the introduction of Bond's semi-regular girlfriend Sylvia Trench, a fight scene with an enemy chauffeur, a fight scene to introduce Quarrel, the seduction of Miss Taro, Bond's recurring CIA ally Felix Leiter, Dr. No's partner in crime Professor Dent and Bond's controversial cold-blooded killing of this character.

Sometimes episodes in the novel retained in the film's altered narrative introduce elements of absurdity into the plot. Bond's "escape" from his cell via the air shaft, for instance, originally conceived as a ruse of Dr. No's to test Bond's skill and endurance, becomes an authentic break-out in the film. Features carried over from the novel's obstacle course, however, such as the torrent of water and scalding surface, have no logical justification in the script. Such incongruities would recur in subsequent Bond films.

Pretty sure that one was one of the closer ones to the source material...

The first 5 or so were pretty closely based on the books, then they used the books heavily for characters and overall plot for most of the rest, until recently. They ran out of books and just started making things up.  That's what I'm talking about.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service is one of my favorite Bond movies, actually. I'd never seen it until I bought that anniversary box set they were selling a few years ago. Based on reputation, I was expecting a crapfest. But, in fact, it had more to it than most Bond films, and was more enjoyable than many of the others.

I would watch ninety minutes of a toilet bowl cleaner commercial if it featured young Diana Rigg.

As an alternative may I suggest The Assassination Bureau, or Running Delilah.

And Lexa Doig on Arrow as Talia was scary how close to Emma Peel as I've ever seen.
