You can roll that stone to the top of the hill

Drag your ball and chain behind you

You can carry that weight with an iron will

Or let the pain remain behind you

Chip away the stone

(Sisyphus)

Chip away the stone

Make the burden lighter

If you must roll that rock alone

You can drive those wheels to the end of the road

You will still find the past right behind you

You can try to deny the weight of the load

Try to put the sins of the past night behind you

Carve away the stone

(Sisyphus)

Carve away the stone

Make a graven image

With some features of your own

You can roll that stone to the top of the hill

You can carry that weight with an iron will

You can drive those wheels to the end of he road

You can try to deny the weight of the load

Roll away the stone

(Sisyphus)

Roll away the stone

If you could just move yours

I could get working on my own

Baby, if you just say you care
Follow you most anywhere
Roll away the stone, roll away the stone
And in the darkest night
I'll keep you safe and alright
Roll away the stone, roll away the stone

Won't you roll away the stone
Why be cold and so alone ?
Won't you roll away the stone
Don't you let it die

No matter if fools say we can't win
I know I'll fall in love again
Roll away the stone, roll away the stone
So sing - we still got a chance
Baby, in love and sweet romance
Roll away the stone, roll away the stone

Won't you roll away the stone
Why be cold and so alone ?
Won't you roll away the stone
Don't you let it die

There's a rockabilly party on Saturday night
Are you gonna be there ?
(I got my invite)
Gonna bring your records
(Ohh, will do)
Made it

Won't you roll away the stone
Why be cold and so alone ?
Won't you roll away the stone
Don't you let it die

Come on roll
Come on roll, yeah
Come on roll
I want you to roll
Come on, yeah
Come on roll

Took a look down a westbound road,
right away I made my choice
Headed out to my big two-wheeler,
I was tired of my own voice
Took a bead on the northern plains
and just rolled that power on

Twelve hours out of Mackinaw City
stopped in a bar to have a brew
Met a girl and we had a few drinks
and I told her what I'd decided to do
She looked out the window a long long moment
then she looked into my eyes
She didn't have to say a thing,
I knew what she was thinkin'

Roll, roll me away,
won't you roll me away tonight
I too am lost, I feel double-crossed
and I'm sick of what's wrong and what's right
We never even said a word,
we just walked out and got on that bike
And we rolled
And we rolled clean out of sight

We rolled across the high plains
Deep into the mountains
Felt so good to me
Finally feelin' free

Somewhere along a high road
The air began to turn cold
She said she missed her home
I headed on alone

Stood alone on a mountain top,
starin' out at the Great Divide
I could go east, I could go west,
it was all up to me to decide
Just then I saw a young hawk flyin'
and my soul began to rise
And pretty soon
My heart was singin'

Roll, roll me away,
I'm gonna roll me away tonight
Gotta keep rollin, gotta keep ridin',
keep searchin' till I find what's right
And as the sunset faded
I spoke to the faintest first starlight
And I said next time
Next time
We'll get it right

Used to call me by my first name
And now you never even call me at all
Used to say I was your only flame
It was so simple, I believed it all

Now I hear you've got a new friend and lover
Who keeps you warm on the cool cool nights
There's a rumor in the air don't seem right

Rumors in the air like a thief in the night
Taking more than their share
Taking more than their right
Rumors in the air like a thief in the night
Rumors, rumors in the air

Used to call me when you felt the pain
Now you never even feel it at all
Used to swear that we would never change
And like a fool I believed it all

Now you say you had a weekend of trouble
As you stare me down with those cool cool eyes
There's a rumor in the air don't seem right

Rumors in the air like a thief in the night
Taking more than their share
Taking more than their right
Rumors in the air like a thief in the night
Rumors, rumors in the air

Used to call me by my first name
And now you never even call me at all
Now you say that I'm the one to blame
Doesn't matter how I feel at all

Well I hear you've got a new friend and lover
You'll take him down it's so plain to see
Well there's a rumor in the air killing me

Rumors in the air like a thief in the night
Taking more than their share
Taking more than their right
Rumors in the air like a thief in the night
Rumors, rumors in the air

Rumors in the air, rumors in the air
Rumors in the air
Rumors, rumors, rumors
Rumors in the air

Here's something to think about
Where would we be now without
Nasty habits, nasty habits

Makes me want to scream and shout
Life would be so dull without
Nasty habits, nasty habits

All those naughty little things
That we don't discuss publicly
Nasty habits, nasty habits
Tell me your secrets, tell me your name
Tell me your secrets

Does it please you to employ
Little girls or little boys
Nasty habits, nasty habits
Do you like to romp and play
By yourself when they're away
Nasty affair what do I care

Do you peek at magazines
Filled with doggies and leather queens
Nasty habits, nasty habits
Tell me your secrets that no one should hear
Whisper them softly into my ear
I won't tell, I won't tell

People act so proper when they're going 'bout their business
Cup of coffee, friendly conversation
'Til they get home
'Til they get home
Turn the phone off, lock the door and shut the curtains
Make sure that the neighbors are without suspicion
No one will know
No one will know

Nasty habits I must condone
No one knows what I do when I'm all alone
Nasty habits I'm so ashamed

Nasty habits here to stay
Now they'll never go away
Try and stop you'll have to pay
Nasty habits are here to stay

People act so proper when they're going 'bout their business
Cup of coffee, friendly conversation
'Til they get home
'Til they get home

Take the phone off, lock the door and shut the curtains
Make sure that the neighbors are without suspicion
No one will know
No one will know

Nasty habits I must condone
No one knows what I do when I'm all alone
Nasty habits I'm so ashamed
But we must not let that stop our little game
Nasty habits are so much fun

Nasty habits here to stay
Now they'll never go away
Try and stop you'll have to pay
Nasty habits are here to stay

Down the street you can hear her scream "you're a disgrace"
As she slams the door in his drunken face,
And now he stands outside and all the neighbours start to gossip and drool.

He cries "Oh girl, you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?"
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green.

And so castles made of sand, fall in the sea, eventually.

A little Indian brave who before he was ten, played war games in
the woods with his Indian friends, and he built a dream that when he
grew up, he would be a fearless warrior Indian Chief.

Many moons passed and more the dream grew strong, until tomorrow
He would sing his first war song,
And fight his first battle, but something went wrong,
Suprise attack killed him in his sleep that night

And so castles made of sand, melts into the sea eventually.

There was a young girl, whose heart was a frown,
Because she was crippled for life, and couldn't speak a sound
And she wished and prayed she would stop living, so she decided to die.
She drew her wheel chair to the edge of the shore, and to her legs she smiled

"You won't hurt me no more."
But then a sight she'd never seen made her JUMP AND SAY
"Look, a golden winged ship is passing my way"
And it really didn't have to stop...it just kept on going.
And so castles made of sand slips into the sea,
Eventually

Into the night, but out of the dark
To be cornered and yet to survive
The jester performed, with his body he scorned
With his voice he amused, and a little confused
His masters the king and queen
The laugh of the king was clear and strong
So out of fear the crowd laughed along
And how I'd love to leave here
Moving under...

Lost in space and with no hiding place
And no chance of staying alive
His men turn to him with confident eyes
They've been in trouble before, but still they're alive
They're sure he'll think of something
But slowly their eyes take on looks that accuse
As they realize, he knows they must lose
And how I'd love to leave here
Moving under...

Doesn't anybody know that I am on the run?
How I'd love to leave here

Always moving on
Always moving on somewhere that doesn't mean a thing
How I'd love to leave here
How I'd love to be there
Always on the run
Always searching for some place that I can be alone
Doesn't anybody know the reason why?
Doesn't anybody know the reason why?

Into the night, but out of the dark
To be cornered and yet to survive
The fugitive runs, though his hands are tied
His legs are in irons but his head's held high
He knows how not to feel

The time is right to move out of the night
Into the light and stay out of sight
How I'd love to leave there
Moving under...

Doesn't anybody know the reason why?
Doesn't anybody know the reason why?

We the people fight for our existence
We don't claim to be perfect but we're free
We dream our dreams alone with no resistance
Fading like the stars we wish to be

You know I didn't mean what I just said
But my God woke up on the wrong side of His bed
And it just don't matter now

'Cause little by little we gave you everything you ever dreamed of
Little by little the wheels of your life have slowly fallen off
Little by little you have to give it all in all your life
And all the time I just ask myself why you're really here

True perfection has to be imperfect
I know that that sounds foolish but it's true
The day has come and now you'll have to accept
The life inside your head we give to you

You know I didn't mean what I just said
But my God woke up on the wrong side of His bed
And it just don't matter now

'Cause little by little we gave you everything you ever dreamed of
Little by little the wheels of your life have slowly fallen off
Little by little you have to give it all in all your life
And all the time I just ask myself why you're really here

Little by little we gave you everything you ever dreamed of
Little by little the wheels of your life have slowly fallen off
Little by little you have to give it all in all your life
And all the time I just ask myself why you're really here

Why am I really here ?
Why am I really here ?

Some men are born to marry a young girl
Marry and settle down
Others are born to die at a young age
Never to roam around

I was born to wander
I was born to roam

Wandering from shore to shore
Looking from door to door
Listening to every sound

Oh, let me take your hand
Lead me from No Man's Land
Please let me settle down

I don't want to wander
I don't want to roam
Maybe some day I'll marry a young girl
Marry and settle down

Maybe some day I'll die at a young age
Never to roam around

I was born to wander
I was born to roam

Dark night nothing to see
Invisible hand in front of me
Scared to death there's someone near
Scared to move but you can't stay here

You know me, evil eye
You know me, prepare to die
You know me, the snakebite kiss
Devil's grip, the Iron Fist

Flying horse don't make a sound
Flying hooves don't touch the ground
Walk in circle lose you track
Can't go on but you can't go back

You know me, evil eye
You know me, prepare to die
You know me, the snakebite kiss
Devil's grip, the Iron Fist

Moon eclipse and you know why
Ghost rider in the sky
Beast of evil devil's hound
Tooth and claw they pull you down

You know me, evil eye
You know me, prepare to die
You know me, the snakebite kiss
Devil's grip, the Iron Fist

When you're out there on your own
Where your memories can find you
Like a circle goes around
You were lost until you found out
What it all comes down to
One by one
The lonely feelings come
Day by day, they slowly fade away
Ooh, the look was in her eyes
You never know what might be found there
She was dancing right in time
And the moves she made so fine
Like the music that surrounds her
Should I stay or go?
I really want to know
Would I loose or win
If I try and love again?
Oh oh oh gonna try and love again
Oh oh oh I'm gonna try and love again
Oh oh oh gonna try and love
Right or wrong, what's done is done
It's only moments that you borrow
But the thoughts will linger on
Of the lady and her song
When the sun comes up tomorrow
Well, it might take years
To see through all these tears
Don't let go
When you find it you will know
Oh oh oh, gonna try and love again
Oh oh oh, gonna try and love again
Oh oh oh, gonna try and love again
Oh oh oh
Oh oh oh
Sometimes lose, sometimes win,
Sometimes you need a friend
Oh oh oh
Oh oh oh
Gonna try,
Gonna try
Gonna try, gonna try, gonna try, gonna try
Gonna try, gonna try, gonna try, gonna try
Gonna try, gonna try, gonna try, gonna try
Gonna try
Gonna try, gonna try, gonna try, gonna try
Gonna try, gonna try, gonna try, gonna try
Gonna try, gonna try, gonna try, gonna try
Gonna try

She gets too hungry for dinner at eight
She likes the theatre and never comes late
She never bothers with people she'd hate
That's why the lady is a tramp

Doesn't like crap games with barons or earls
Won't go to Harlem in ermine and pearls
Won't dish the dirt with the rest of the girls
That's why the lady is a tramp

She likes the free fresh wind in her hair,
Life without care
She's broke and it's oke
Hates California, it's cold and it's damp
That's why the lady is a tramp

She gets too hungry to wait for dinner at eight
She loves the theatre but never comes late
She'd never bother with people she'd hate
That's why the lady is a tramp

She'll have no crap games with sharpies and frauds
And she won't go to Harlem in Lincolns or Fords
And she won't dish the dirt with the rest of the broads
That's why the lady is a tramp

She loves the free fresh wind in her hair
Life without care.
She's broke but it's oke
Hates California, it's so cold and so damp
That's why the lady... that's why the lady...

That's why the lady is a tramp

The Vengeful One
LYRICS
He is observing the chaos, taking in the lack of raw humanity
It's as if the entire world's fallen in love with their insanity
Hear the innocent voices scream
As their tormentors laugh through all of it
No forgiveness from all I've seen
The degradation I cannot forget

So sleep soundly in your beds tonight
For judgement falls upon you at first light

I'm the hand of God
I'm the dark messiah
I'm the vengeful one
(Look inside and see what you're becoming)
In the blackest moment of a dying world
What have you become
(Look inside and see what you're becoming)

As the violence surges
And the teeming masses have been terrorized
The human predators all gone mad
Are reaping profits born from their demise
The rabid media plays their roles
Stoking the flames of war to no surprise
Only too eager to sell their souls
For the apocalypse must be televised

So sleep soundly in your beds tonight
For judgement falls upon you at first light

I'm the hand of God
I'm the dark messiah
I'm the vengeful one
(Look inside and see what you're becoming)
In the blackest moment of a dying world
What have you become
(Look inside and see what you're becoming)

When you die
You'll know why
For you cannot be saved
With all the world enslaved
When you die
You'll know why
You'll die
You'll know why
For you cannot be saved
This world is too depraved
When you die
You'll know why
I'm the hand of God
I'm the dark messiah
I'm the vengeful one
(Look inside and see what you're becoming)
In the blackest moment of a dying world
What have you become
(Look inside and see what you're becoming)
I'm the hand of God
I'm the dark messiah
I'm the vengeful one
(Look inside and see what you're becoming)
In the blackest moment of a dying world
What have you become
(Look inside and see what you're becoming)
(Look inside and see what you're becoming)

Have you seen the mistletoe
It fills the night with kisses
Have you seen the bright blue star
It fills your heart with wishes
Have you seen the candlelight
It shines from every window
Have you seen the moon above
It lights the sky in silver

Green is in the mistletoe
And red is in the holly
Silver in the stars above
That shine on everybody
Gold is in the candlelight
And crimson in the embers
White is in the winter night
That everyone remembers

Have you heard the boys outside
When all the girls are skating
Have you heard their sweet hearts cry
For all this time they're waiting

Green is in the mistletoe
And red is in the holly
Silver in the stars above
That shine on everybody
Gold is in the candlelight
And crimson in the embers
White is in the winter night
That everyone remembers

Have you seen the children playing
Tiny hands are frozen
Have you seen them hurry home
When suddenly its snowing

Green is in the mistletoe
And red is in the holly
Silver in the stars above
That shine on everybody
Gold is in the candlelight
And crimson in the embers
White is in the winter night
That everyone remembers

Have you heard that bells are ringing
Ringing out their story
Have you heard the choir singing
Glory, glory, glory!

(Ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma...)

I, I can't get these memories out of my mind,
And some kind of madness has started to evolve.
(Ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma...)
And I, I tried so hard to let you go,
But some kind of madness is swallowing me whole, yeah

(Ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma...)

I have finally seen the light,
And I have finally realized
What you mean.

Ooh oh oh

And now I need to know is this real love,
Or is it just madness keeping us afloat ?
(Ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma...)
And when I look back at all the crazy fights we had,
Like some kind of madness was taking control, yeah
(Ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma...)

And now I have finally seen the light,
And I have finally realized
What you need.

Mmmm...

(Ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma...)

But now I have finally seen the end (finally seen the end)
And I'm not expecting you to care (expecting you to care)
But I have finally seen the light (finally seen the light)
I have finally realized (realized)
I need your love
I need your love

Come to me
Just in a dream.
Come on and rescue me.
Yes I know, I can't be wrong,
And baby, you're too headstrong.
Our love is
(Ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma...)
Madness

  • 2 weeks later...

Big man, pig man, ha ha, charade you are
You well heeled big wheel, ha ha, charade you are
And when your hand is on your heart
You're nearly a good laugh
Almost a joker
With your head down in the pig bin
Saying "keep on digging"
Pig stain on your fat chin
What do you hope to find?
When you're down in the pig mine

You're nearly a laugh
You're nearly a laugh
But you're really a cry.

Bus stop rat bag, ha ha, charade you are
You fucked up old hag, ha ha, charade you are
You radiate cold shafts of broken glass
You're nearly a good laugh
Almost worth a quick grin
You like the feel of steel
You're hot stuff with a hat pin
And good fun with a hand gun

You're nearly a laugh
You're nearly a laugh
But you're really a cry.

Hey you Whitehouse, ha ha, charade you are
You house proud town mouse, ha ha, charade you are
You're trying to keep our feelings off the street
You're nearly a real treat
All tight lips and cold feet
And do you feel abused?
.....!.....!.....!.....!
You gotta stem the evil tide
And keep it all on the inside

Mary you're nearly a treat
Mary you're nearly a treat
But you're really a cry.

Stone cold sober

So glad it's over

End of story

Road clear before me

There's no deceit again

I'm on my feet again

Complete again

The song I sing's a simple one

Leave me alone

Let me go

Please don't break my heart again, oh no

Let me go

Please let me go

Tossed, torn, and tumbled

This dream has crumbled

Beg, steal, or borrow

I'll take tomorrow

Out on my own again

I won't be thrown again

Disowned again

The hurricane left me alive

Sure I'll survive

Let me go

Please don't break my heart again, oh no

Let me go

Please let me go

Now here's a little story
To tell it is a must
About an unsung hero
That moves away your dust
Some people make a fortune
Other's earn a mint
My old man don't earn much
In fact....he's flippin'.....skint

Oh, my old man's a dustman
He wears a dustman's hat
He wears cor blimey trousers
And he lives in a council flat
He looks a proper narner
In his great big hob nailed boots
He's got such a job to pull em up
That he calls them daisy roots

Some folks give tips at Christmas
And some of them forget
So when he picks their bins up
He spills some on the steps
Now one old man got nasty
And to the council wrote
Next time my old man went 'round there
He punched him up the throat

Oh, my old man's a dustman
He wears a dustman's hat
He wears cor blimey trousers
And he lives in a council flat

I say, I say Duncan
I 'er...I found a police dog in my dustbin
(How do you know he's a police dog)
He had a policeman with him

Though my old man's a dustman
He's got a heart of gold
He got married recently
Though he's 86 years old
We said 'Ear! Hang on Dad
you're getting past your prime'
He said 'Well when you get to my age'
'It helps to pass the time'

Oh, my old man's a dustman
He wears a dustman's hat
He wears cor blimey trousers
And he lives in a council flat

I say, I say, I say
My dustbins full of lillies
(Well throw 'em away then)
I can't Lilly's wearing them

Now one day while in a hurry
He missed a lady's bin
He hadn't gone but a few yards
When she chased after him
'What game do you think you're playing'
She cried right from the heart
'You've missed me...am I too late'
'No... jump up on the cart'

Oh, my old man's a dustman
He wears a dustman's hat
He wears cor blimey trousers
And he lives in a council flat

I say, I say, I say (What you again)
My dustbin's absolutely full with toadstools
(How do you know it's full)
'Cos there's not much room inside

He found a tiger's head one day
Nailed to a piece of wood
The tiger looked quite miserable
But I suppose it should
Just then from out a window
A voice began to wail
He said (Oi! Where's me tiger head)
Four foot from it's tail

Oh, my old man's a dustman
He wears a dustman's hat
He wears cor blimey trousers
And he lives in a council flat
Next time you see a dustman
Looking all pale and sad
Don't kick him in the dustbin
It might be my old dad

Well, I heard my friends really got in a mess
So I'm gonna have to leave Yoda, I guess
But I know that I'll be coming back some day
I'll be playing this part 'till I'm old and grey

The long-term contract that I had to sign
Says I'll be making these movies till the end of time
With my Yoda
Yo-yo-yo-yo Yoda yo-yo-yo-yo Yoda

Aw, Cracklin' Rosie, get on board
We're gonna ride
Till there ain't no more to go
Taking it slow
And Lord, don't you know
We'll have me a time with a poor man's lady

Hitchin' on a twilight train
Ain't nothing here that I care to take along
Maybe a song
To sing when I want
No need to say please to no man
For a happy tune

Oh, I love my Rosie child
You got the way to make me happy
You and me we go in style
Cracklin' Rose,
You're a store-bought woman
But you make me sing like a guitar hummin'
So hang on to me, girl,
Our song keeps runnin' on
Play it now, play it now
Play it now, my baby

Cracklin' Rosie, make me a smile
Girl, if it lasts for an hour, that's all right
We got all night to set the world right
Find us a dream that don't ask no questions
Yeah

Oh, I love my Rosie child
You got the way to make me happy
You and me we go in style
Cracklin' Rose,
You're a store-bought woman
But you make me sing like a guitar hummin'
So hang on to me, girl
Our song keeps runnin' on
Play it now, play it now
Play it now, my baby

Cracklin' Rosie, make me a smile
Girl, if it lasts for an hour, that's all right
We got all night
To set the world right
Find us a dream that don't ask no questions
Ba ba ba ba ba ......

Welcome to the Grand illusion
Come on in and see what's happening
Pay the price, get your tickets for the show
The stage is set, the band starts playing
Suddenly your heart is pounding
Wishing secretly you were a star

But don't be fooled by the radio
The TV or the magazines
They show you photographs of how your life should be
But they're just someone else's fantasy

So if you think your life is complete confusion
Because you never win the game
Just remember that it's a grand illusion
And deep inside we're all the same
We're all the same

So if you think your life is complete confusion
Because your neighbors got it made
Just remember that it's a grand illusion
And deep inside we're all the same

America spells competition, join us in our blind ambition
Get yourself a brand new motor car
Someday soon we'll stop to ponder what on earth's this spell we're under
We made the grade and still we wonder who the hell we are

"Dear God, you made many, many poor people.
I realize, of course, that it's no shame to be poor.
But it's no great honor either !

So, what would have been so terrible if I had a small fortune ?"

If I were a rich man,
Yubby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dum.
All day long I'd biddy biddy bum.
If I were a wealthy man.
I wouldn't have to work hard.
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.
If I were a biddy biddy rich,
Idle-diddle-daidle-daidle man.

I'd build a big tall house with rooms by the dozen,
Right in the middle of the town.
A fine tin roof with real wooden floors below.
There would be one long staircase just going up,
And one even longer coming down,
And one more leading nowhere, just for show.

I'd fill my yard with chicks and turkeys and geese and ducks
For the town to see and hear.
Squawking just as noisily as they can.
With each loud "cheep" "swaqwk" "honk" "quack"
Would land like a trumpet on the ear,
As if to say "Here lives a wealthy man."

If I were a rich man,
Yubby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dum.
All day long I'd biddy biddy bum.
If I were a wealthy man.
I wouldn't have to work hard.
Yubby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dum.
If I were a biddy biddy rich,
Idle-diddle-daidle-daidle man.

I'd see my wife, my Golde, looking like a rich man's wife
With a proper double-chin.
Supervising meals to her heart's delight.
I see her putting on airs and strutting like a peacock.
Oy, what a happy mood she's in.
Screaming at the servants, day and night.

The most important men in town would come to fawn on me!
They would ask me to advise them,
Like a Solomon the Wise.
"If you please, Reb Tevye..."
"Pardon me, Reb Tevye..."
Posing problems that would cross a rabbi's eyes !

And it won't make one bit of difference if i answer right or wrong.
When you're rich, they think you really know !

If I were rich, I'd have the time that I lack
To sit in the synagogue and pray.
And maybe have a seat by the Eastern wall.
And I'd discuss the holy books with the learned men, several hours every day.
That would be the sweetest thing of all.

If I were a rich man,
Yubby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dum.
All day long I'd biddy biddy bum.
If I were a wealthy man.
I wouldn't have to work hard.
Idle-diddle-daidle-daidle man.

Lord who made the lion and the lamb,
You decreed I should be what I am.
Would it spoil some vast eternal plan ?
If I were a wealthy man.

Tradition, tradition ! Tradition !
Tradition, tradition ! Tradition !

Who, day and night, must scramble for a living,
Feed a wife and children, say his daily prayers ?
And who has the right, as master of the house,
To have the final word at home ?
The Papa, the Papa! Tradition.
The Papa, the Papa! Tradition.

Who must know the way to make a proper home,
A quiet home, a kosher home ?
Who must raise the family and run the home,
So Papa's free to read the holy book ?

The Mama, the Mama! Tradition !
The Mama, the Mama! Tradition !

At three, I started Hebrew school. At ten, I learned a trade.
I hear they've picked a bride for me. I hope she's pretty.

The son, the son ! Tradition !
The son, the son ! Tradition !

And who does Mama teach to mend and tend and fix,
Preparing me to marry whoever Papa picks ?

The daughter, the daughter ! Tradition !
The daughter, the daughter ! Tradition !

Matchmaker, matchmaker, make me a match.
Find me a find, catch me a catch.
Matchmaker, matchmaker, look through your book
And make me a perfect match.

Matchmaker, matchmaker, I'll bring the veil.
You bring the groom, slender and pale.
Bring me a ring, for I'm longing to be
The envy of all I see.

For Papa, make him a scholar.
For Mama, make him rich as a king.
For me, well, I wouldn't holler
If her were as handsome as anything.

Matchmaker, matchmaker, make me a match.
Find me a find, catch me a catch.
Night after night, in the dark, I'm alone.
So, find me a match of my own.

Hodel, oh Hodel, have I made a match for you.
He's handsome! He's young! All right, he's 62.
But he's a nice man, a good catch. True ? True !
I promise you'll be happy. And even if you're not,

There's more to life than that. Don't ask me what !
Chava ! I've found him! Will you be a lucky bride!
He's handsome. He's tall! That is, from side to side.
But he's a nice man, a good catch, Right ? Right !
You've heard he has a temper. He'll beat you every night.
But only when he's sober- so you're all right !

Did you think you'd get a prince ?
Well I do the best I can.
With no dowry, no money, no family background,
Be glad you got a man !

Matchmaker, matchmaker, you know that I'm
Still very young. Please, take your time.
Up to this minute, I've misunderstood
That I could get stuck for good.

Dear Yenta, see that he's gentle.
Remember, you were also a bride.
It's not that I'm sentimental.
It's just that I'm terrified !

Matchmaker, matchmaker, plan me no plans.
I'm in no rush. maybe I've learned
Playing with matches a girl can get burned.
So bring me no ring, groom me no groom,
Find me no find, catch me no catch.
Unless he's a matchless match !
