Political Discussion Thread (With Rules)

From what I've read the Ohio government has tried multiple times over the past few years, to get hundreds of thousands of voters off the registration lists. Their efforts have been challenged in court, not always successfully. In a state with eight million registered voters, that could be enough to swing many close races.

Damn. I really think this going to backfire big as every State Run by the GOP does every legal trick they can do to keep Harris or whoever runs for the Democrats off the ballot

Well, Harris was already on the ticket so it might be harder to keep her off. I don’t really know, but that’d be the argument if I was in her shoes. She’d be on the ballot anyway as part of the ticket.

Who knows really? Unprecedented times seem to be here to stay, been saying things are unprecedented for at least a decade. Maybe longer.

He's endorsed Harris, yes. Not sure she's got the deal sealed from the start.  And I can still see legal challenges galore on ballot placement (if only to try to delay and drain) But as you point out, Who knows really?

Oh for sure it’s not a done deal until the DNC Convention, and maybe not even then. Looks like you were correct (already) about RNC opposition to the change.

“Every state has its own system, and in some of these, it’s not possible to simply just switch out a candidate.“ per Mike Johnson. Already lining up their arguments. Sigh.

I’m thinking Biden-Harris was already submitted to the ballot process in those States though, but haven’t looked close enough to see. So can the Vice Presidential candidate on the ballot get moved to the Presidential candidate if they try to block her nomination as the reason? I have no idea. Maybe it’s a matter of State ballot laws?

 Here we go…

One bad debate performance. Which, from reporting I've seen, was greatly contributed to by Joe Biden's own error in judgement. He's going to have to live with that for the rest of his days.

We're in wholly uncharted waters now. Whatever the outcome, I'm confident historians will be analyzing the decade 2015-2024 for centuries to come.

"In a phone call with CNN minutes after Biden announced his exit from the race, Trump described Biden as “the worst president by far in the history of our country.”  I swear to God, if I had Trump in front of me I don't know if I could restrain myself from strangling him with my bare hands.

BIG difference, tho...Johnson announced at the end of March, not July.

At this point, I think it's the only possible path forward.  Too many calls from too many places to stand down.  I'm not saying it's a *good* path, but there's no other option I can see.  I also don't think it was just the debate;  the speeches I saw, there were several instances which made me concerned about age-related issues.

Yeah, we know multiple Rep-run states are gonna try to fight this, but come on.  He was never nominated.  There's still 3 full months before the election.

I actually *hope* there isn't too much fighting at the convention, and Harris can be nominated decently quickly.  The Dems *have* to try to re-gather or they're toast, unless Trump continues his totally unhinged speeches.

It's the only modern analogy no matter how distant.

Sure, but it's actually the lesser event that affected the '68 race.  Johnson's resignation came after, I believe, only *1* primary...New Hampshire.  (Some state conventions before he resigned, but they were all undecided.)

The bigger factor was the assassination of RFK, after winning California.  That was mid-June.  Nomination very much up in the air, but Kennedy was gaining considerable momentum.  And it shocked the party, and the country...I remember the funeral train's week-long trip back to DC.

And that was still nowhere near as late in the process.

Steady.  I'm not going to lie to you, this is a bad situation.  We're in for a lot of excitement via the courts over the next three months.  We'll need to rally behind the new nominee (if there is one), and we're going to have to be ready to resist if/when there are shenanigans by the other side.  Protests, disruptions, and general strikes are very likely to be in our future.

It sucks to have to live in interesting times, but here we are.  There were many ways to resist Hitler, and there will be many ways to resist Trump.  Figure out your own risk tolerance and do what you can.
