Also, figure out how separate patriotism from military adventurism, imperialism, and all other reckless interventions.

I really liked Trump's reluctance to jump into foreign conflicts, I just wish he had a better grasp of soft power. Isolationism in military position only.

As American troops in Saudi oil fields demonstrated, that reluctance tends to wane when money is involved. Particularly Trump's money.

The Decline of the American World. A not-brief but not-lengthy read, this article surveys opinions from a range of political and diplomatic observers of America based in Europe, and provides a pretty thorough and balanced "outsider" perspective.

I'll also recommend this Atlantic article, linked to the one above:  Anne Applebaum: History will judge the complicit.

I heard the author discussing her article on the radio. In brief, how people become collaborators with an occupying foreign power. She finds Trump administration officials making the same excuses that were used in Vichy France and in other tyrannies. No, she's not saying Trump is Hitler or Stalin. The point is how people who know better, or should, come to betray their country and their ideals.

I thought after 1/2 a year of 2020 madness I was prepared for most anything and then...

Kanye West running for President.

* Campaign slogan: “YES!”

* Vice presidential choice: Michelle Tidball, a preacher from Wyoming.
* Platform: The Wakanda Management Model.
* Party: The Birthday Party.

My brain hurts.

Still mad my choices are "Sexual predator" and "Too handsy in the office and sniffs your hair, so sexual predator too but different grade, I guess"

Actually worse than 2016, when I had to check the box for "not a Predator, but stuck up for one for 8 years"

But hey. I'm in Idaho. Our border with Montana looks like Biden leaning in to smell hair.

Good for them.

Supreme Court says President Trump cannot keep tax, financial records from prosecutors

The most surprising bit to me was this, as I seem to recall he was unwilling to commit to the idea during his confirmation hearings:

Quote

"In our system of government, as this court has often stated, no one is above the law," Kavanaugh said. "That principle applies, of course, to a president."

If you're left-leaning I feel you have to be pleasantly surprised with Kavanaugh and Gorsuch.  They have not turned out to be the blindly right-voting Trump-favoring justices many were concerned they would be.
