(thinking about it, likely statistical - you can probably predict that based on FB information via Cambridge Analytica... and even if CA went away, the data results would not.  a 90% match rate will still look like <x> voters... which could have been cross-referenced by those on record as having showed up to vote in person.)

There was a mass shooting during this morning's parade in Highland Park, IL.  That's not far from where I work and is a heavily Jewish area. No word on the shooter or motive, tho.

Believe the gun has been recovered, but according to NYT, running near-live updates, the shooter has not been caught.

6 dead so far.

Big questions around the area about whether to hold other events planned for this evening.

The bastard deserves going full medieval.

And the Republicans will still push for More Guns as the defense....

So at what point should we start comparing the violence in our society to be comparable to the acts in the Middle East?  ie- the bombings, shootings, and so on?  That is, 'failed state' level violence?

We're not like those primitives.

They're saying the perp shot from a rooftop.

And bailed when he needed to.  Police describe him as being "discreet."  BUT!!!!!!

According to CNN, a person of interest has been named, and a car he drives described, with plate.  Bulletin includes "is considered armed and dangerous"...so it's likely they think it is the shooter.  This was just now.

EDIT:  25 people shot;  6 deaths to this point.  I believe there's one other that was listed as critical.  Fingers crossed.....

Is anyone ever considered "armed, but not really all that threatening" or perhaps "dangerous, but not armed as far as we have been able to ascertain"?

"Do not take Viagra if your heart is not healthy enough to have sex."

The notion of a reasonable person has slipped to "if a cretin can misconstrue it, you better make it clear."

Dangerous but not armed would be possible, tho...think Mike Tyson in his heyday.

Glad they caught that guy. Crazy that he'd been idiating on mass shootings in his social media for more than a year and no one noticed.

YESSSS!!
That they caught the jerk.

But for the other...how many others do this, and never actualize anything like this?  Those signs are not good predictors, has been my understanding...at least individually.  I daresay that if we collate a whole BUNCH of em?  There's more risk.  But how do you do that without moving into a Thought Police realm?

Perhaps foolishly I'd hope the people around them would try to help them get out of whatever has led them to that point.

Well, we do live in a society that uses firearm related analogies and metaphors as casually as sport related analogies and metaphors.

And there are politicians who toss similar firearms related “political speech” onto the airwaves in speeches and their political advertisements and then claim its all harmless...

And thus tacitly suggests that the only way to solve political differences is through violence...

here I was trying to have more of a normal life instead of being online all the time.  Now I'm wondering if it's better to just start more HERO games... >_>

I mean, it bothers me because literally everyone is fooling themselves at thinking they are making "the correct financial decision for their retirement" by supporting these policies.  Retiring is hard when your grocery bill is higher than rent.........

Oh, the lack of air conditioning during a heat wave will probably get them before starvation becomes an issue.

The Supreme Court Is Dooming America to Repeat History

From the article's conclusion:

Quote

This [Dobbs and Bruen] is a judicial choice to identify a set of congenial values and insist that they are inscribed in our highest law. It is to say that the Constitution, which should be the pantheon of American values, contains instead all the ignorance and prejudices of the past that the true heroes of our history fought so hard to overcome. That makes a mockery of their sacrifices and turns their victories to ash. It is a betrayal of the American experiment and an embarrassment to us all.

We also live in an atomized society.

I've used "polar society" for...quite a while.  We're attracted to specific poles, drawn to them, sucked into them.  It's been going on for probably 30 years, but...probably since Clinton, it's grown tremendously.

The SCOTUS was predicated on the conviction that the law must supersede politics. This court has reversed that principle.

The most profound and lasting damage Donald Trump has done to America is to poison the credibility of and undermine the people's faith in their most fundamental institutions.
