Museums in comics have some rather unique problems. The two obvious ones are Power objects that cause people to gain superpowers. People stealing strange looking rocks because they give off radiation that causes Uberman to lose his powers. - - - - - - With that in mind, I think I should have a news item in my Champions campaign, where someone breaks into the museum and *leaves* something behind, instead of taking something. assault Posted April 7, 2016 Report Share Posted April 7, 2016 Museums of comics versus museums in comics? Hmm... Characters in comics can be animated to commit or fight crime. Their understanding of the "real" world may be tenuous. Copies of historic comics can be valuable, and thus be targets for geeky villains. "Real life" heroes could have comics series based on their exploits. Their opponents might seek to destroy any trace of them. Alternatively, the comics might accidentally contain details about the heroes they might not to have made public. Comics may accurately reflect events that occur in other universes. Likewise books, scrolls etc. There might be things that shouldn't be there. Things that are impossibly old. Things that are from the future. Things from other dimensions... Lord Liaden Posted April 7, 2016 Report Share Posted April 7, 2016 Many larger museums recreate temples, tombs, monuments, etc. by transferring pieces from the original ruin to a new display site, and reassembling them. This can be taken as a violation by ghosts haunting the ruins, angering them to take revenge; an invocation for an ancient deity to reappear; or the reactivation of a gateway to another world. Ancient artifacts may be discovered which are actually advanced technology, left behind by alien visitors or some lost antediluvian civilization (think Star Gate). Museums can house statues and other mementos of the local favorite super hero which attracts various members of his rogues gallery to trash the place. It's kind of meta, but I can imagine people trying to get employed by a museum in hopes they can find the origin-inducing object that surely must be hidden somewhere in the collection. Best if you can get a job in the professional staff so you can examine all the items that aren't on display, but even a janitor or night watchman could try to figure out which exhibit is actually a magic/alien/futuretech item that might grant super-powers. As an adventure for a detective hero, this might turn out to be the solution to a murder in a museum. A staff member surprises the night watchman trying to jimmy the lock in the storage area to get at some ancient idol or the like; the panicking watchman kills him, then calls the cops and claims that he discovered the body, but the intruder who killed the curator escaped. It's objects on display can be either traps, potential weapons that the villain needs to find a way to control, or even his victims held hostage (turned to stone for example.) Fund raising is really difficult everyone you try to have a Gala opening for the great and good masked goons attack and try to rob the patrons. Having to rename whole wings when the billionaire philanthropist who funded them turns out to be a super-villain who has attempted to destroy the city conquer the earth or kicked puppies.
