Brainstorm: Trek Ship Name

I am working on an example Star Trek campaign write up for hero newbies called To Boldly Go!

I have three character portraits from Storn and plan to get four more, plus a ship piece, and a cover.

The idea is to provide an example of how to get started with take a "take it or leave it" crew.

Its going to be set in 2155 and revolve around the crew of the NX-03.

I'm hoping Hero Assembled can give me some good ideas for ship names.

There are always space shuttle names: Discovery, Endeavor, Atlantis, etc.

And Brit-style names: Intrepid, Indefatigable, Resolute, Victory.

But, I'm looking for something that makes me say That's It!

So, heroes, what do you think would be a great name for an NX-Class ship?

Ship names also reflect their missions.

But we're still lacking some info on the type of campaign you will be running. Peaceful times would lead to calm names of science and exploration.  Time that are tense or have hostile threats would lead to more aggressive names.

From the Trek info the NX Class ships were named:

Enterprise (NX-01)

Columbia (NX-02)

Challenger (NX-03)

Excalibur (NX-03)

Discovery (NX-04)

Constellation (NX-04)

Atlantis (NX-05)

Slayton (NX-05)

Endeavour (NX-06)

Intrepid (NX-07)

Defiant

Lexington

Avenger (NX-09)

Currie (NX-16)

There is some doubling of names to hull numbers and some that do not have a hull number depending on source.

Are you taking this from Memory Beta?

Only the first two ever appeared, or were named, on screen.

Yes, just like every single fictional everything, everything written/filmed/drawn is in the bullpen.  Being named on screen is really just a tiny part of the available information built up over the last decades, especially when someone is brainstorming names ;)

I was thinking of trotting out SFB's hull designations/names for its Galactic Survey Cruisers for inspiration, but there is a lot of overlap.

Farragut (it is used in Original Series and destroyed)

Apart from naming ships after cities in Britain we also named them after gods and goddesses and Greek heroes like Ajax and Achilles.

Ark Royal is probably too British. Similarly Golden Hind. And Revenge is just probably not right. Similarly Warspite.

These however are non British and effectively non country specific

Victorious

Vanguard

Triumph

Resolution

Repulse

Renown

Majestic

Magnificent

Invincible

Indomitable

Illustrious

Glory

Fearless

Eagle

Dreadnought

Dauntless

Courageous

Audacious

Ardent

Amazon

Excelsior in honour of Stan Lee.

Look on Wikipedia for Royal Navy ships and you can find others

You could always take a leaf out of Iain M Banks Culture novels. There are some great ship names in that like

How about Argo (after the ship that carried the heroes of Greece in search of the Golden Fleece) or Heyerdahl

(after 20th-Century explorer Thor Heyerdahl)?

Major Tom 2009 :dyn

While I'm not using it for the main ship, heyerdahl is worth a reference.
