spacer.pngDonald Duck first appeared [this day] in the 1934 cartoon The Wise Little Hen which was part of the Silly Symphonies series of theatrical cartoon shorts. The film's release date of June 9 is officially recognized by the Walt Disney Company as Donald's birthday despite a couple in-universe contradictions. Donald's appearance in the cartoon, as created by animator Dick Lundy, is similar to his modern look — the feather and beak colors are the same, as is the blue sailor shirt and hat — but his features are more elongated, his body plumper, and his feet smaller. Donald's personality is not developed either; in the short, he only fills the role of the unhelpful friend from the original story.

spacer.pngWorld War Zero

This conflict, the Seven Years' War, was known by many names. In the United States, the local theater of combat is known as the French and Indian War. The Seven Years' War was a world war fought between 1754 and 1763. It involved every European great power of the time except the Ottoman Empire, spanning four continents, and affected the Americas, Europe, India, the Philippines, and West Africa.

The Death of General Wolfe is a 1770 painting by Anglo-American artist Benjamin West, commemorating the 1759 Battle of Quebec, where General James Wolfe died at the moment of victory.

13 August 1961: The government of East Germany close the border around West Berlin, beginning the construction of the Berlin Wall.  The Wall would come down in 1989.  On a personal note, my father was sent to Berlin in August 1962; my mother, brother, and I came later, arriving in Berlin three days before Christmas that year.  I last visited the city in 1971.  I gather it's a little different now.

The battle of Lake Poyang (Chinese: 鄱陽湖之戰) was one of the largest naval conflicts in history, with ~850,000 involved. It took place 30 August – 4 October 1363 between the rebel forces of Zhu Yuanzhang and Chen Youliang during the Red Turban Rebellion which led to the fall of the Yuan dynasty. Chen Youliang besieged Nanchang with a large fleet on Lake Poyang, one of China's largest freshwater lakes, and Zhu Yuanzhang met his force with a smaller fleet. After an inconclusive engagement exchanging fire, Zhu employed fire ships to burn the enemy tower ships and destroyed their fleet. This was the last major battle of the rebellion prior to the rise of the Ming dynasty.

Of course, the most famous event for this day...

TA 3018, the Nazgul attack Weathertop and hit Frodo with a Morgul-knife, but fail to kill him.

Frodo always got the short end of the stick.

Fine with me; not like mine was startling or original.  Weathertop, Shelob, staring down the Eye during the trip through Gorgoroth, then losing a finger.  Merry and Pippin grow famous;  Sam's Mayor forever and gets his girl;  Bilbo got to live in honor in Rivendell for decades.  Frodo's forgotten.

World War 1, "The War to End All Wars", came to a conclusion on this date in 1918. Sadly, the end of the old world order didn't bring lasting peace as there was no clear idea as to what was to replace it. 😐

The way that the winners set things up after WWI, it basically guaranteed that there would be a following war.  In 1920, some leaders even went so far as to say the same thing,  they even predicted the dates and conditions that we would be back fighting again,  almost correctly.

Frankly, WW2 came because of the "stab in the back" right-wing conspiracy theory that became popular in Germany as an excuse for having lost WW1.

This is among the reasons why right-wing conspiracy theories now should be taken absolutely seriously, and their promulgators hunted down and silenced.

And if that sounds like a left-wing conspiracy theory, I'm good with that.
