Y'know, this thread almost has me wanting to write down all the powers down, one each on index cards; ditto the advantages and the limitations. Then start constructing random powers. Draw a power blindly. Roll 1d6 and draw that many advantages. Roll another 1d6 and draw that many limitations. Then turn all the cards over and hammer something together that works. If alien governments ask your character to deal with an infestation of the Ever-Eating Karrg. If you have a pet Balrog hanging around in case you want to roast wiennies. If Thok wants to bum a ride home in your homebuilt starcruiser. If you have designed a weapon with the following parameters -- Only works vs. Doctor Destroyer, NND -- defense is NOT being Doctor Destroyer. If your character waited for Doctor Destroyer to get that little gizmo that pumps him up to the high-end stats "just so he would be a challenge." If NASA keeps asking your character to toss the space shuttle into orbit for them so they can save the cost of rocket fuel. If military keeps asking your character to quit taking pot shots at passing spy satellites. ...your character might be overpowered. And 10 minutes later your sidekick returns muttering how if someone wanna-be heroes are going to waste his time, it should at least be a challenge. If your characters calculate their character costs the same way scientists write the mathematics of distance between planets. If the local planet devouring entity makes it a point not to go near your planet again after the indigestion he got last time.
