The Winged People

Hello Herophiles,

 

On another thread I brought up the Winged People I ran across in Fantasy Hero Companion II..They are a playanle race. As written they are humans with wings tgough they are more frail.

 

I never personally knew how to use them as a player character. So the question I ask is, how would use thIis race as a PC?

I have never really cared for them. So when my wife wanted to play one I stole the culture and content for them from a book I read.

(I forgot the name of the book, but the premise was a winged girl was a professional investigator and as assigned to investigate some bodies found with a ritual drawn on them the same as the pattern drawn on her when she was younger and could not remember.)

You could borrow from the background of Dawnstar of the Legion of Superheroes. She came from a transplanted Native American tribe that was altered by genetic engineering to have feathery wings enabling them to fly.

Another source would be the Avariel from D&D. My first thought was the Myrrhin from Michael Moorcock's Elric stories, but I couldn't find much about them.

Tkdguy, thats interesting because in my revamped Western Shores, Im thimking.of.making Dragons the big bad.

Since they have birdlike wings, preening them becomes an issue. They may carry special grooming kits to manage aligning their feathers, removing dirt and bugs from them, smoothing them with fine oils and removing damaged ones. In idle moments, they may preen without thinking about it, instinctively.

I liked the Dragon riders and Hawk riders from the magical items section. Perhaps a winged person is adventuring because dragons are again becoming a threat to them and they need to find some of the items?

 

What if, they had a magical blow out and the Hawk Riders became the winged people and the dragon riders became gargoyles?

As a note they make unrivaled scouts in many situations. The ability to fly above the enemy would make them with more and paid more than normal soldiers in military situations.

Because of this any integration into human society would include acknowledgement of that value by leaders and likely some amount of reciprocal social status.

Also prime targets of enemy archers! Being scouts is something I hadn't thought of-thanks!
