Having trouble in a class? Talk to the instructor as soon as possible. Even if nothing else happens, it conveys that you care about the class, which is huge. Also, instructors usually have vast latitude while the course is going on to make special arrangements, but once it's over, that discretion vanishes almost completely.

BTW, I heartily recommend a now out-of-print book titled Never Trust a Calm Dog, which has lots of useful bits (and a number of not obviously useful bits also). For example,

 

To kill an animal with a hammer, draw imaginary lines from the left ear to the right eye and right ear to the left eye. Strike where the lines cross.
