Today I returned to my own house after a few days in hospital and several more recuperating with a friend.

There is a substance called lead tungstate. It is quite dense (very slightly more so than steel), but it looks like vaguely yellowish clear glass or plastic. But it is remarkably opaque to hard radiation, like x-rays. It is a scintillator: energetic particles passing through it cause it to glow briefly around the particle, which is very useful for particle physicists; there's a bunch of the stuff in at least one of the experiments on the LHC at CERN.

There is an amusing anecdote about one physicist carrying a slab of the stuff in his luggage, and being pulled aside because the security surveillance x-ray techs had scoped his bag, found this completely x-ray blocking oblong (they imagined a bomb in a lead box or some such) but on opening the bag found what looked to be just glass. Questions were asked.

I imagine this sort of stuff could be useful in a Champions scenario for defeating x-ray vision without stopping ordinary vision, e.g. as the viewing port of a lead-lined door.
