Guest Worldmaker
Re: A Thread for Random Musings One the one hand, I want to publically acknowledge the private comment I received this morning, and I sort of want to admit that I kind of agree with it. On the other hand, I don't want to come off as more of an arrogant jackass than I have in the past. What to do, what to do.

lemming
Re: A Thread for Random Musings Today was a good day. Got to work early. Delivery van was unloading supplies for the Cats. Helped get the stuff put away and then I got to work at Benton's House. Been scheduled twice before, but changes in plans happened. Cleaned the Kidney room with one cat draped over my neck. Since we had plenty of interns & volunteers, I did a deep clean and also did the rafters. These rafters were much cleaner than the Colonel's Barracks. Got everything done by noon. Had lunch with a woman who's from my home town of Mill Valley. (small world). Along with the great view, the cafe has pretty good food. After Lunch, socialized with cats. A couple new ones, Checkers & Bebo. Neither was very happy. Bibo was making odd growly noises, but after I brushed her for a bit she seemed to be much better. I decided to find Checkers and found him under the roll away that is over the outside litter boxes. Coaxed him out and got him somewhat relaxed, but he's going to take some more work. Did find him a good spot to curl up that's not a litter pan though. Checked in on them a few hours later and Bebo was curled up next to one of the other cats. Checkers was in his new spot, but didn't act skittish when I approached. So some progress. Will check in again tomorrow.
Guest Worldmaker
Re: A Thread for Random Musings A woman in a hot air balloon realized she was lost. She lowered her altitude and spotted a man in a boat below. She shouted to him, "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am." The man consulted his portable GPS and replied, "You're 30 feet above sea level. You are at 31 degrees, 14.97 minutes north latitude and 100 degrees, 49.09 minutes west longitude." She rolled her eyes and said, "You must be a Democrat." "I am," replied the man. "How did you know?" "Well," answered the balloonist, "everything you told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to do with your information, and I'm still lost. Frankly, you've not been much help to me." The man smiled and responded, "You must be a Republican." "I am," replied the balloonist. "How did you know?" "Well," said the man, "you don't know where you are or where you're going. You've risen to where you are, due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise that you have no idea how to keep, then you expect me to solve your problem. You're in exactly the same position you were in before we met but, somehow, now it's my fault." Vondy
Re: A Thread for Random Musings Rant! Here's the deal: I'm working on a gritty low-fantasy story (no idea on length. Just writing it until it stops). Its fanstasy because its set in a "different world," not because its filled with monsters and magic, or has a young ignorant male protagonists who just happen to have the key to all power that trumps the otherwise unstoppable villian, but still can't figure out the remakably beautiful, but virginally chaste because the author can't deal with sex heroine. Its a hard-boiled adventure story with intrigue, dubious protagonists who are mere mortals, not to mention a dollop of sex and a truckload of violence. Here's the problem: almost every fantasy market out there, get this, requires the story include a strong dose of overt magic or otherworldliness. Ugh! First, the obvious question: why bloody why? Answer: we're marketing to fourteen year old males, jack. Second, more practical question: how do you create a coherent magic system that's meaningful to the plot and theme (a rough approximation of their words) when the plot and theme don't freaking need them in any way shape or form? Answer: 'cause magic's so coooooool. This was the first idea I've had that is flowing out like a river during the spring thaw, too. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH! Samuraiko
Re: A Thread for Random Musings There are few things in life more aggravating for me than having a good idea, and having absolutely NO idea how to go about implementing it. zornwil
Re: A Thread for Random Musings The Musings on Random Musings thread has never really taken off since the RFK thing, which is too bad since I always found it a nice place to chat, though the Longest Thread serves that purpose, if more disjointedly. Dr. Anomaly
Re: A Thread for Random Musings I need some electronics help. I'm decent at using a soldering iron, repairing stuff, and so on but designing things from scratch (or knowing where to look for more non-standard information, designs, or components) is a bit out of my usual level of knowledge. I suppose what I need is the electronics equivalent of a hacker or a cracker, though I don't know what the proper term would be.

lemming
Re: A Thread for Random Musings It's semi-official that I have passed my trial period and will be on full time hired next week. Not a bad day today. Got to do Jill's Diner again. While I have favorites in many of the buildings, I like many of the cats there. I got a kudos for pointing out a problem that would of been worse if it hadn't been spotted. (And no, it was floor level...) Jenn & I went out to dinner to the Rocking V. Pretty good place to eat. The Indonesian Curry with Miso Marinated Tofu was awesome. Of course, the whole Utah thing about not being able to bring in wine that doesn't have a Utah seal on it is pretty silly. Guess we'll be drinking our two cases at home...
