Re: A Thread for Random Musings

I introduced my kids to RPGs last weekend. I'm halfway expecting CPS to come take me away, grind me up, mix me with asphalt and patch potholes with me. OTOH, that would actually be useful to society as a whole, so I'm pretty sure they won't do that in particular....

The moment a new participant posts something in the Non-Gaming Discussion area that a veteran participant doesn't like, that new poster will be accused of being a "sock puppet".

Attention the American posters in particular !

If you get a chance try and see a film called The Mighty Celt. It will probably be on TV rather than the cinema due to Irish accents which don't play well in Peoria et al.

The story of a boy trying to train a greyhound to win races.

It is made by the BBC and shot on location in Ireland. The adult members of the cast are Ken Stott as the breeder and owner of the dogs, Gillian Anderson as the boy's mother and Robert Carlyle as and ex-IRA man who knew the boy's uncle.

Carlyle has a recognisable Scot accent normally but he and Gillian give good Irish accents and it is all but impossible to see their original accent.

The film could be termed art house and is downbeat so might play elsewhere but not likely in the American cinema. I know for a fact it has played on one American TV station.

Ever get the feeling that TV is out to spike the movies ? Like putting on the original before the remake appears for example.

It's happening twice this week as Munich opens tomorrow.

There have been two programmes on TV about the Israeli response one of which is on tonight.

A colleague also questioned the timing of the film. Both the Palestinians and the Israelis go to the polls and the timing is not really that sensitive.

Re: A Thread for Random Musings

I'm running a solo pbem set in an altered version of harn. The dominant religion in the east is a monotheistic religion (looks quasi catholic on the surface, but in the absence of a savior figure looks more like a Judaic-Islamic hybrid, but isn't supposed to be related to any of them). Anyways - the player is a conservative american guy with old fashioned values and has known me for years. He also knows I'm very religious by American standards (if not in the conventional waspy sense), and this, combined with the mono-neutral religion in the game has led him to express a side of himself I wasn't aware was there (he mentioned he felt comfortable doing so with me in the context of the game). The man is a fanatic. Now, when you read that, consider the source :D

Actually, its kind of interesting to be able to have serious religious themes/questions impact a game. Its a new experience - and not one I'm opposed to.

An Imam waited in line to have his car filled with gas just before a long holiday weekend. The attendant worked quickly, but there were many cars ahead of him in front of the service station. Finally, the attendant motioned him toward a vacant pump.

"Wise One," said the young man, "I am truly sorry about the delay. It seems as if everyone waits until the last minute to get ready for a long trip."

The Imam just chuckled. "I know what you mean, young man, for it is the same in my business."
