Re: A Thread for Random Musings

We are going to elections!

Yes!

Wooohooo!!!

The Sharon-Olmert suck-fest has ended and his right hand girl, the spineless one, has failed - miserably - in her attempts to form a new government.

The president has three days to either declare elections or assign the task of forming a new government to a different party leader.

He's already indicated the latter seems... pretty freaking unlikely!

Yeah, baby!

Oh, except, if the polls don't change in the next 100 days, Netanyahu will be PM... again.

Not sure if that's a good thing.

Better, yes. But good?

Um....

Whatever. Happy dance! Happy dance!

Never shout FIRE in an empty library.

Saturday morning: I'm awakened by a very early phone call I was not expecting. It's my supervisor. In my half groggy state I think "Am I supposed to be there? I thought it was Saturday...oh no, what if it's Friday??" No, it was very different. There was a fire in the library. It started about 4:30 am and caused no small amount of damage. Who knows where we go from here? it sounds like it could be primarily smoke damage, meaning it's just a cleaning operation more than anything else. Still, this isn't a scenario I ever expected.

Now I get a call this morning. They thought at first that this might take a week or so to clean up. then it turned into weeks. Now...they're saying months. Really makes me wonder what the hell happened exactly, especially since no actual fire reached the first floor and it sounds like it is almost exclusively smoke damage. The computer servers are in the basement too, but they're still working. An FBI agent will be coming in to investigate.

I'll be working at another branch in the meantime. The fact that the meantime=months is really a kick in the gut. The best part about my job was the people, and now we're being distributed throughout the system.

Re: A Thread for Random Musings

So I'm talking to a friend of mine on the phone, and she's worried that she's going to lose her job.

Generally, my standard spiel in a case like this is, "I can get you a job in the porn industry!" (As a Project Manager or something, of course, it's just funny to watch peoples' faces when I say it). But for some reason I suddenly think better of saying that. Probably because this friend is a girl and could easily take it the wrong way.

OTOH, she is really cute.

OK, I'm going to hell now. :o

Re: A Thread for Random Musings

We had a gentleman come in here yesterday looking for a 1963 Americana Encyclopedia. The library doesn't keep any encyclopedia over ten years old at the very maximum. He went on to tell me that he was in that edition and wanted to show his granddaughter. He was the only man to drive a tank through the Berlin Wall. How cool is that?

Coincidence? I think not...

In the news today:

  • Nasty fungus may be killing thousands of bats - 20 hours agoA previously unknown fungus that thrives in chilly temperatures may be the culprit behind the deaths of at least 100,000 bats hibernating in caves in the northeastern United States, scientists said on...
  • Giant bat makes comeback in Tanzania - 15 hours ago OSLO (Reuters) – A giant bat with a wingspan up to 5.5 feet has made a comeback from the brink of extinction in Tanzania in a rare conservation success, an environmental group said on Friday.

Re: A Thread for Random Musings

I wish that the 3D Pipes screensaver hadn’t been changed from the way it was in Windows 98SE. It had the "flex" option for the bends. When combined with using the Metal Links bitmap, it made for some Giger-esque imagery (Metallic Snakes) IMO.

Windows XP has 3D Pipes, but it no longer has the Flex option. :( If anybody knows how to bring this back (even with a separate screensaver), I'd appreciate hearing how.

Re: A Thread for Random Musings

I have a small potted plant in my cubicle at work. I've had it for years. Don't know what it is, exactly.

When I came into work yesterday, I saw a big pile of dirt atop the rock bed I put on top of it. I thought it was kinda strange, but didn't worry about it. I figured that maybe someone else in the office had a plant that died, and they came by and dumped the rest of their soil on my plant. No biggie.

But this morning when I came in, it had happened again. Now things were really weird.

I removed the rocks so I could add the dirt to the main soil and noticed a hole, about the size of a quarter, under one of the rocks. Using some scissors, I dug around down the hole to see where it led. It led all the way to the bottom of the pot, and then around. I couldn't really dig any further without uprooting my plant. I poked around with the tip of the scissors but didn't see anything, so I filled in the hole as best as I could and put the rocks back.

So it seems there is (was?) something living in my plant. Don't know what. Pretty sure it's not a spider, because there's no webs. Don't know what else it could be.
