As of late last night, my 10-year-old has 1,000 subscribers on his YouTube channel.

His response? "Now we start getting paid!"

What a nut.

Hmm, lovely.  Looks like the cold front and snowfall will hit northwestern Utah about the same time I do.

What brings you to our fair desert, if I may ask? Nothing unpleasant, I hope.

I have driven from Seattle to Austin (leaving house etc. under my daughter's supervision) to attempt in retirement something I couldn't manage in 19 years of teaching: get back into some astronomy research.  I had a standing invitation from my old PhD advisor to come down and spend time.  So, I'm here for most of two months to get immersed in it, meet collaborators, and pick up new tools.

While there was snow next to the road for a brief interval in Utah (on US 6 between Provo and Price) it was not a problem, aside from its influence on the inevitable other idiots on the road.

Only two of the houses on the street had Halloween decorations up. One had a pair of skeletons outside and bats while the other had graves of famous people (Elvis, Anne Boleyn etc) and a sign post for Elm Street and other haunted or spooky locations. Halloween is just not big a deal over here but they made the effort.

As I sit here pondering the lost Buddhas and the lost pyramids found in jungles and looking at the marvels of things built a thousand years ago and then look around at the various banana republics and desert kingdoms I am stabbed through that tiny part of my heart that still thinks that something admirable may one day be discovered about humans--

No matter how much art we have forgotten how to paint, no matter how many civilizations have lived and died leaving only a scant stone record of cairns and diases, no matter what incredible things we have forgotten how to build--

There will never be a time when ten thousand men will not know exactly how to destroy the ones that are left.

An issue with my casual naming of scratch files is that when working from the command line I find myself giving commands like "more barf" fairly frequently.

"cat barf" occurs also.

In one month this thread can legally drink in the United States. The follow up thread Musings on Random Musings had its 20th birthday in September.

Perhaps coincidentally, I picked up a bottle of Knappogue Castle this afternoon.  I will crack it open as soon as soon as I finish the Tullamore Dew.
