Air Bag design

Recommended Posts

I have a character who is looking to transform himself into a large crashmat/cushion  - the sort that stuntmen would use to safely fall onto from height. In other words it prevents falling damage.

I'm looking for ideas on how to replicate this. 5th ed rules being used.

Damage Reduction, Usable by Other, only for Impact.

You could also, for example, dive between someone who's been knocked back and a wall they are about to hit, or in front of someone doing a Move Through.

Lucius Alexander

Or get between me and that charging palindromedary

The Air Powers chapter in Champions Powers (6e) and the first UNTIL Superpowers Database (5e) had an Air Cushion power that enabled the character to resist Knockback and survive long falls.

"Fall-Breaking Cushion: Breakfall 14-; Costs Endurance (-½), Only For Falls Of 2 Segments’ Duration Or Longer (-½)"

A successful roll halves falling damage, with a roll of half the target number resulting in no damage.  There's a -1 penalty per 4m (2") fallen.

It included a variant where the cushion could be created under someone else.

"add... the Advantages Usable By Other (+¼) and Ranged (+½)".  In this case, Ranged wouldn't be needed.

I had an idea for trigger, growth, armor usable as an attack (for the trigger) but before I went crazy with it I remembered there are rules for catching a falling character.

Probably cheaper to buy up what makes it easier to do that better (I think it's just strength and OCV but I don't have access to the 5e book right now)  with a limitation of 'only in heroic id' / 'linked' to a shapechange or limited power.

If its for others, just some defenses to reduce falling damage would work.  Or simply an agreement with the GM that someone who can use growth and shapeshift can make themselves an adequate cushion, reducing damage (and suffering movethrough damage themselves).

This seems like a perfect use for the Power skill roll stunt.
