I have to admit I like A a little (it's how I made sense out of the prequels, the Jedi just learned the hard way that no prophet ever actually said balance is necessarily a good thing)

B, yeah not crazy about that.  ANd yeah, I don't particularly like dark and edgy for the sake of dark and edgy.  Go catch up on Wolverine if you want dark and edgy or something.

Anakin fulfilled his prophecy alright...over two decades later: he killed Palpatine (and, indirectly, himself).

Initially, 'bring balance to the force' seemed to make no sense to me.  At the time there were seemingly thousands of Jedi and no Sith.  Balance could only mean the destruction of the Jedi, yet they hailed the prophecy as a good thing.  Ultimately it meant the Jedi and Sith were both destroyed, I guess.

Having just watched the movie in its entirety form the first time yesterday,  I now feel I can comment fairly'

The movie (and the Resistance) would have been done in the first 5 minutes if the First Order had any modicum of military sense.  "Scramble the fighters to cover us!" should be Intro to Carrier Strategy 101. For that matter, they should stick with the Star Destroyers and bury the Resistance with Tie fighters in endless waves. It's got to be cheaper and require less manpower than dreadnaughts.

How unlikely is it that the fleets have identical speeds to 4 or 5 decimal points? Someone should be slower or faster so that the range opens or closes. I guess hiding in asteroids would have been too shamelessly following the blueprint.

The First Order must have the backing of the galaxy's wealthy, they get all the good stuff and the Resistance buys the leftovers and defects.

Finn and Rose: There's no chemistry here IMO, and it takes some mental flip-flops to go from stunning a deserter to falling madly in love with said deserter over the course of 2 days.

Kylo and Rey: Meh.

Curmudgeon Luke: I just can't see this evolution of the character. Yeah, you made a mistake in training him. But don't give up and let the galaxy pay the consequences.

Space Leia: There are no words...

Snoke: He falls victim to Dark Side induced megalomania. Give any of these guys extended command and they become convinced that their plans are flawless and their underlings are too cowed to betray them yet.

Holdo: Telling the commander of all your pilots the plan, (or even that you have one) is probably good for morale if nothing else, and can't really be much of a security risk in this situation. You might even keep him from some harebrained desperate scheme  of his own.

Poe: Respect for your superiors even when you question their orders might make them bring you inside the plans.

Weaponized Lightspeed: All battles should be fought with drone ships using this strategy.

Even with all that, the second half of the movie(after the casino) managed to be entertaining if not completely sensible. The action scenes were decent and the SFX were good. The final fight was a letdown( the HISHE was so much  better)  but didn't feel jobbed, just predictable. I give the movie a C--- overall, tolerable but I'm glad I waited for Netflix.

The one-hundred eighty degree flip on Poe's personality was obnoxious; it clearly came off as an attempt to make him the unreasonable male in the midst of unquestionably superior female leadership. Ultimately, it turns out that Holdo's reluctance to divulge ANYTHING of consequence was a stupid plot point that went nowhere.

One argument that I've seen for Luke's attempt to murder his nephew is "Well duh, he did it to Vader in Return of the Jedi too!". Putting aside the fact that Palpatine - THE most powerful practitioner of dark side abilities in the galaxy if not the universe - was egging on Luke during his most emotionally vulnerable moment (the same young man that had only just become a Jedi knight), you'd think that he would have LEARNED FROM HIS EXPERIENCE and integrated that lesson into the core of his very being. Some mistakes are understandable, but this? Hell no.

weren't the bombers supposed to have been protected by X-Wings?

I didn't see any protection happening

There were X-Wings escorting the bombers. It's just that the bombers were such a poor design for attacking a mobile target and  terribly fragile  that when the First Order did scramble fighters, they were easily destroyed.

Leia and Holdo's little side conversation about him didn't help that perception either. Its tone came across as snarky rather than 2 generals discussing the developing of a promising officer.

Leia and Holdo actions towards Poe, almost seemed like an attempt to break his confidence for the giggles by the end.

On military strategy:  I was glad I wasn't sitting to the wall during the movie, I would have ended up with brain damage.  Poe was the "military genius" of the movie, and that is saying bad about everyone else, than any good about him.   But, yeah Holdo had no concept at all about troop morale.  Giving your subordinates absolutely no hope of surviving or even to a hope to die furthering their cause, probably lends itself ripe to mutiny.  The big surprise might be the mutiny wasn't larger.

I'd have to re-watch, but isn't it Kylo Ren who shows Rey the image of Luke attacking him? Is there another spot in the movie where the attack is confirmed?

Agreed. You can add more important women to the story without engaging in derisive and smirky "battle of the sexes" posturing.

Whether you like Rogue One or not, Jyn Erso was a strong female lead who didn't lecture, talk-down to, or smirk at the men around her.

As for Holdo, condescending purple haired admirals with halo headdresses in evening dresses who are bad at leadership do nothing for me.

She was an admiral. Have her dress like an admiral, behave like an admiral, and express herself like an admiral.

And, you know, actually have enough regard for her reporting officers enough to at least inform them of her battle-plan. Gosh... that might of helped.

Ternaugh, Disney is hurriedly cutting any branches that tie Neo Star Wars to the original trilogy; in particular, OT characters are being killed off right after their personalities have been decidedly mutilated. The excuse of "maintaining continuity" aside, this is why they also trashed the Expanded Universe...except when they want to adapt elements that they know will sell such as Grand Admiral Thrawn (and Mara Jade is rumored to appear in Episode IX). Isn't that just a bit convenient? Everything has to be pushed aside so brand new shiny and empty things can be marketed. I bet those Rose Tico action figures are just flying off the shelves!

- Luke's X-Wing is sitting underwater at the edge of the cliff...Rey noticed it.

- My assumption is that you had to actually die first to become a 'force ghost'.  Leaving one to believe Luke committed suicide or died from overexertion.  Either way, you were left confused as to what happened to Luke...which shouldn't happen.

- Poe was quite satisfied with the plan once he knew it, thus your supposition is confusing to me.  The problem is that it seemed that THERE WAS NO PLAN (let's just keep running away...slowly).

- Obviously everything can be destroyed with specific tactics.  Two of the Order's most powerful ships were destroyed (or nearly destroyed) with tactics quite easy to replicate and the First Order seemed completely surprised by...thus my comment!! (see I can use exclamation points, too!)  :)

Not so sure luke is dead honestly...My first thought seeing it was more of a projection type of thing...

Warning: Harsh Language.

The opening line from Swordfish comes to mind:

"You know what the problem with Hollywood is. They make shit. Unbelievable, unremarkable shit."

Of course, Swordfish played straight-man to its own introductory thesis!

But, so does almost everything else Hollywood makes.

Especially, when The Mouse gets involved.
