Old Man
This reminds me of the Mythbusters episode where they investigated reports of ancient Chinese paper armor. It did pretty well, but one wonders how it would have held up in the field.
Christopher R Taylor
As long as it wasn't on a long campaign, it should do very well in a single battle. And for most soldiers in a quasi-medieval setting, that's all you'll need: one fight.

Is it laminated layers of paper, like the Greek linen armor, or is there something else involved? On a similar note, I was always fascinated by the silk arrow capes in Bushido that billowed out behind a horseman and stopped arrows with a cushion of air.
