Okay, here's the rough of my story:

 

Jo took in Liz after she ran away from her father.  They enjoyed living off by themselves, but were attacked by the Ben Wade gang, who rode off with Liz.  Jo avoids exposing herself too much to the town, lest her secret get out. For this though, she needed help. She put together the others (including El Topo) as a posse.  They track the gang to a remote Pueblo settlement, but cannot find the gang.

 

Sam confides in his son (Emmett) that there are signs of witchcraft in the town, and that something very wrong is going on.  The others don't need his experience with the supernatural to notice there are no adults in town. They do notice a wagon train of pioneers had come somewhat recently; their wagons are still around and the white children intermingle the native.  

 

Emmett finds Liz, being hid in the town. She's frightened, but unhurt. The other children repeat that Liz and Emmett have nothing to fear. Emmett finds their specificity disturbing.  The posse, meanwhile, find Kane's journal in the wagons.

 

Eventually we realize that Kane did  . . . terrible things to raise He Who Walks Behind the Rows.  Things that required his own death. He's a ghost now, forcing the remaining children to take turns being possessed by him.  He uses them to tend to the demon in the corn, hoping to learn how to take the demons power for his own.

 

John Brooder finds the Ben Wade Gang's remains, and manages to alert the posse that as notorious as the gang was, it was no match for the children. John is killed in the act.  Liz and Emmet escape, being forced to perpetuate the cycle of teen pregnancy the demon demanded, Emmett carrying Kane's remains (to someone who can put Kane to rest permanently). The rest of the Posse dies destroying the corn.
