The Back-to-Basics Superdraft (April 2019)

This one's really simple and straightforward. No overarching theme, no restrictions based on type or origin of character, no quotas to fill. It's the Superdraft in its purest form: Five Heroes, two villains, two options, and a location. That's it.

There are some rules, of course. They are pretty much what you would expect.

One draft pick per day, starting Monday, April 1st at 5 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. (I think that's 10:00 p.m. in London and 6:30 a.m. Tuesday in Darwin.) Location will be your first pick. Locations are not exclusive.

One additional pick at the same time every weekday for the next two weeks. We will not be drafting on weekends. This time can be used for makeup picks, fiction, and so forth.

Character picks are exclusive. Choosing a character removes all other versions of that character from consideration. Different people using the same character name may be used, however.

Example: Selecting Captain Marvel Carol Danvers eliminates Carol's other costumed identities--Binary, Ms. Marvel, and Warbird, as well as Ultimate Universe Carol Danvers. It does not eliminate Kamala Khan Ms. Marvel, Monica Rambeau Captain Marvel, or Billy Batson Captain Marvel.

With a nod to tradition, Supergirl and Power Girl are considered separate characters.

Villain picks may be individuals, small groups (up to seven named individuals {which is to say, name the members when you draft the group}), or organizations. Characters already drafted by name are not eligible to appear in organizations or small groups.

Meaning, for example, if Magneto has already been selected, a person who drafts the original Brotherhood of Evil Mutants will either have to replace him or do without.

Similarly, characters drafted by name as part of a small group or organization cannot later be drafted as individuals or members of other teams or organizations.

Option picks may be used for additional heroes or villains, NPCs, MacGuffins, or pretty much anything else to support your story. Option picks are exclusive, unless there's a compelling reason for them not to be.

And that's it. We'll start at 5:00 p.m. EDT with the location pick; selections thereafter can be made in any order. Draft characters, post pictures, tell stories, all that jazz.

What's the policy on historical people?

Or current real people?

There's no genre restrictions?

I assume palindromedaries are acceptable in taglines?

Good questions. Let's say:

1) & 2) No real people, living or dead. Fictional versions of deceased real people are okay (e.g., the Theodore Roosevelt from Night at the Museum). For living people, let's stick with suspiciously similar substitutes (the Vice President from The Day After Tomorrow) or obvious parodies (e.g., Mr. Cheney from Vice).

3) No genre restrictions. Use any genre you'd like. Mix 'em up, if that's what you wanna do.

4) Palindromedaries are always acceptable in taglines.

No more rhymes now, I mean it!

Is this a serious restriction?

Or are we permitted rhyming fiction?

I hope that this was said in jest

But if it's real I'll make the best

Of writing only rhymeless prose

and fight the urge to verse compose.

The palindromedary says: Stop Lucius before he does something verse!

First person to post their pick in the form of a pantoum gets an 11th pick as a bonus from the Commissioner.

Heck, ANYONE who posts their pick in the form of a pantoum gets an 11th pick as a bonus from the Commissioner. (Limit one per player. Terms and conditions apply. Not valid in Panem, Narnia, Antarctica, or any other fictional realm.)
