Pattern Ghost
Looks like it could be good. And at least it's based on a finished book series:
slikmar
Question becomes, will they actually follow the series and its basic meaning (I realize this is simplified) that in the war between Heaven and Hell when Lucifer was thrown out, the wrong side won. If you didnt get that from the books, then maybe my interpretation is wrong. Pariah
Old Man
It's been so long since I read the books that I can't remember many details, but I scarcely noticed any religious overtones. I get that Pullman has some outspoken views on religion and that there was an antagonistic Church organization in the books, but I only remember a cool alchemy/steampunk fantasy with occasional angels. It's going to be really awesome when Lyra pops her adamantium claws and goes to town on the kidnappers though.

Unfortunately, young Professor X will probably stop her with his Telepathy.
Sociotard
They're trying this again after the last movie flopped like a drunk walrus? They gonna tackle the Mortal Engines series while they're at it?
Pattern Ghost
Different "they" this time, and it's a TV series, not a movie. Should give it more room to get to the meat of the material. Trailer looked OK to me. I'm willing to give it a shot.
drunkonduty
I'll definitely give it a go. I love the books and a series has the potential to do them justice.
Pariah
To be fair, the movie wasn't great. It didn't flop because the original material wasn't interesting or because it didn't have a good story to tell. It flopped because it wasn't a very good movie. Kinda like Eragon. In the right hands, HDM could make an excellent visual story. drunkonduty
Old Man
The thing is, although I liked the books and I really like Dafne Keen, I’m also dying to get rid of the HBO portion of my cable bill. Pariah

One more day/week then you can get rid of HBO. Right?
Old Man
$27 a month for eight years... $2592 to finish a story I started reading before Google existed. Jesus.
Pattern Ghost
We've mostly watched it for free. We usually wait for an extended service outage, then call and threaten to cancel our cable. Then we get free HBO as a consolation gift. Worked every year except this year. The service has actually been good lately, so we ponied up the extra 15 bucks this time. drunkonduty
