Pearl Harbor (2001)

Just kidding.

You better be.......

Lawrence of Arabia 1962

A biopic of T E Lawrence. Played by Peter O'Toole it shows how Lawrence went from normal service to inciting the Arabs to revolt against the Turks. The film made stars of O'Toole and Omar Sharif. Directed by David Lean, the film shows the desert and the war against Turkey in the Middle East. There are some wonderful epic shots such as a ship in the Suez Canal and the first appearance of Omar Sharif as O'Toole is getting water from a well.

The French Connection 1971

Two police officers discover that a major shipment of heroin is on its way to the States and try to follow those that they believe are involved. It has an epic car chase as Gene Hackman's cop chases a train. It has more of a documentary style than narrative so that it seems like it is real (based on the real story)

The only reasons to watch that movie were Kate Beckinsale, Jennifer Garner, and Jaime King.

Midway (1976)

Charlton Heston leads an all star cast in the story of the decisive World War Two naval battle.  With Henry Fonda as Nimitz, Glenn Ford, Robert Mitchum, Hal Holbrook, Toshiro Mifune as Yamamoto, and Tom Sellick in a small role.  They used World War Two combat films for the battle scenes and they look better then then new movie's.

It would have been better had they ditched the romance angle.

The Manchurian Candidate 1962

Frank Sinatra and Laurence Harvey star in a film about a man who was captured in the Korean War and brainwashed. Under brainwashing he kills two members of his unit. After the man, Harvey, returns to the States as a hero his stepfather and mother are keen to exploit him. Harvey has been programmed as an assassin who will obey a command when his trigger is activated which is the Queen of Diamonds card when playing solitaire. Angela Lansbury plays the mother and is a really unpleasant piece of work. It is light years away from Jessica Fletcher.

They orginally wanted Lucille Ball for the mother.

Well to be fair, the new movie didn't set a low bar.  It had no bar.

One of the few movies I walked out of the theater.

I just saw a review where they played Anne Best meeting Wade McClusky.   Yikes!  Have they never seen a war movie before.  Midway (1976) was better.  The part of the War and Remembrance mini=series was better.

The Wild Bunch 1969

An aging outlaw gang is ambushed when carrying out a robbery and escape with a decoy loot. The gang go to work for a Mexican general while being hunted by an ex member of the gang and the posse who ambushed them earlier. The film ends in a bloody shoot out. Notable for its portrayal of violence as the gun battles takes place in slow motion. This is one of director Sam Peckinpah's finest works. Stars William Holden, Ernest Borgnine and Robert Ryan.

The Magnificent Seven (1960)

Based on the Japanese film The Seven Samurai and set in Mexico where Calvera (Eli Wallach) leads a group of bandits prey on a Mexican village. The villagers send a group North to get weapons but instead they get men. Yul Brynner recruits and leads an all star cast with Steve McQueen, James Coburn, Charles Bronson, Brad Dexter, Robert Vaughan and Horst Buckholz who journey South of the border. It has a great music score and is poignant as the gunmen get involved in the lives of the poor Mexican farmers and die for them.

Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines 1965

This is a period comedy wherein a competition is announced to fly from London to Paris in 1910 which attracts a worldwide entry field. There is an amount of playing to national stereotypes with the Germans (Prussians) being by the book and the French being amorous for example. In the latter case this degenerates into a duel between the French and Germans using balloons and blunderbusses. Terry Thomas plays an unscrupulous cheat who tries to win by sabotaging his rivals. Benny Hill appears as the fire chief at the English base trying to safeguard the planes. A love triangle develops between the American flyer,. the other English flyer and the daughter of the promoter. The planes are all pre WW1 designs which adds charm to the proceedings. And the film has a happy ending due to an act of heroism by one of the pilots that is recognised and applauded by the race winner.

Dracula 1958

This is the Hammer Films version of the Dracula story and stars two men who became stalwarts of the company, Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing as Dracula and Van Helsing respectively.  Lee is hypnotic as the vampire and the film contains one of the best climaxes of the series or arguably any of the Hammer films as Van Helsing runs the length of a table and rips open the curtains to let sun into a room where he is battling Dracula. He then forces Dracula into sunlight turning him to ash.

They've adapted this into a musical as well.
