mattingly
Short version, as I vaguely remember it... One year when Larry was up for the Hugo Awards, not one white man won a single category. It looked a little like an over-correction on the part of the judges, so Larry said that he was a sad puppy that tokenism beat out actual writing, or something to that effect. A bunch of people got behind his idea, and it took on a life of its own, far beyond Larry's initial comment. A group of Sad Puppies trolled forums, complained, and otherwise made a nuisance of themselves.
pawsplay
Basically the Sad Puppies came up with their own alternative slate and then used bloc voting to try to push their preferences for the Hugos. Nothing more than a desperate grab by bitter white men. Meanwhile Correia has continued to write (and win awards), undercutting his complaint. jaseoffire
Hmm. New product for me to investigate. Then again, I'm always in for the fight against tokenism. Though, it seems that he presumed that the Hugos were ever merit based. I'm not sure I've ever heard of a curated award that wasn't at least a little cliquish. Either way, it sounds like he made a comment and it took off. That's the internet for you.
