Yeah, particularly with QBs.  OverTheCap's got a list of the 2020 salaries.  Wentz and Ryan pretty much define the cheapest non-rookie starter's contracts;  Joe Burrow has the best rookie contract.  Well, yeah, because it's a 2020 rookie contract for the #1 pick.  But prorated, it's still half of Ryan's, much less a Rivers or Garoppolo.

22 hours ago, Badger said:

Also probably doesn't hp when Prescotts demand half a team salary cap.

QB is the highest paid position, but the other major expense is the pass rushers...defensive end, edge linebackers.

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/positional/

And if you look at team salary structures, everyone pretty much has maybe 10 players making Big Bucks (for their positions), another 15-20 running around postional average, and a bunch making league minimum.  MLB and the NBA follow similar patterns.

QB is one of the big ones, tho, because the supply is minuscule, and the demand is off the charts.  I agree Dak's overpaid, but 2 years from now?  $30M will be normal.  (Well, ok, maybe not 2 years.  Pandemic and economic conditions will be a big factor.)

There used to be stories basically about Criminals Too Stupid NOT To Be In Jail...like the bank robber...he says, "give me all your money!"  Teller says, I need to see some ID.  Robber shows his REAL id.

Yes, well, in that vein, I present to you...the New Orleans Saints.  (Spoken in my best Hans Gruber.)

In game news, it appears that the lightning storm that delayed the Texans-Browns game, so terrified both offenses that they fled the area.  Passing stats in particular looked woeful.

6 games in the afternoon slot.  That's pretty rare.

Could be, since Masters was on CBS.  OK.

If the Raiders and Dolphins win this afternoon (expected altho they're not big favorites), and the Ravens beat the Pats tonight (also expected), the gulf in the AFC between the contenders and the also-rans becomes a chasm.  Colts, Browns, Titans, Raiders, and Dolphins would all be 6-3.  Next would be the Broncos and Pats at 3-6...or possibly the Bengals at 3-5-1 but they'd need to beat the Steelers for that to be the case, and that's not likely.  So for all practical purposes, the AFC would be down to 9 teams even if they're forced to 8 playoff slots.  2 weeks before Thanksgiving, no less.

The Donkeys'  offensive line play today was simply egregious. Drew Lock was under assault all afternoon (which is part of the reason he threw four picks) and they could establish no running game whatsoever. That they would lose in embarrassing fashion was inevitable.

Oddly enough, the announcers pointed out that Garett Bolles is one of the top five rated left tackles this season. I guess that's just a testament to how much the rest of the line is struggling.

And that's not even the worst of it. The next three games are Dolphins, Saints, and at the Chiefs.

Impact of no crowds?

With MNF still ongoing, home teams are 76-69 to this point in the season.  52%.

But I found this very interesting too.  It might just be continuing a trend.

TL;DR -- last year, the home teams only won 52% of the time.

Then this:

Curious....

Wow, the Bears are in free-fall.  First 4 drives of the second half, 3 and out every time.  Net, +3 yards.  5th drive was after the big punt return late...started at the Vikes' 45.  First pass play was fine, 12 yards I think...first down.  Then *thud*.

And now...ball back with 45 seconds left, no time outs, on their own 20....FAT chance.  First down, Foles gets grabbed by the jersey, chest high, but gets a bit torqued around and he's now on the ground.  OUCH...he's being taken off on a cart.  Any kidding aside, that's not something I wish on...well, almost anyone.  I'm not a saint, after all.  But no defense has a shot when the offense does absolutely nothing.

Well, Jameis Winston can pretty much start looking for a new job for next year.

Taysom Hill named starter with Brees out.  Hill's got snaps, sure, but I believe predominately as a wildcat QB.  If Winston can't get past him, it's pretty clear he's got no real future with the Saints.  Doesn't say his career is completely done, to be sure, but it's not a good sign.

Taysom Hill has spent the last couple of years asserting that he has what it takes to be starting quarterback in the NFL. Now I guess we'll all find out.

It's worth noting that in five years at BYU, Taysom Hill suffered season-ending injuries in four of them. I hope he's not looking at a similar fate as a starting quarterback in the NFL.

Actually this is Sean Payton finding out if he was correct about Taysom Hill. If Hill shines then that contract they gave him is on the high side for a good backup QB but justifiable because Hill does so much else. If Hill doesn't then they can flip back to Winston, and see if he's the answer to life after Brees which may come as soon as next year.

Taysom Hill might bomb but could shine.  Winston's a much more known quantity...and that's not in his favor.

Starlord:  report is that Hill took all the first-string snaps.  Plus, if you want situational....Winston seems like the main guy in that context, with Hill staying in his complementary, situational role.
