I suppose it's fitting that Rams are sheep, because Los Angeles got fleeced in this trade.

Of course, in a division where the other quarterbacks are Kyler Murray, Russell Wilson, and whoever Kyle Shanahan puts under center next year, I suppose they had to make a move of some kind.

With Matthew Stafford now off the market, it will be interesting to see what kind of desperate trade the "experts" will be picking the Broncos to make to fix their quarterback situation.

Strangely, I think one of the big winners from this trade could be the Houston Texans. Sure, they said earlier today that Deshaun Watson isn't going anywhere, but I don't expect that's true. If Detroit can pry two firsts, a third, and a starting quarterback from a team for Matthew Stafford, can you imagine what the Texans can ask for Deshaun Watson?

They can try, the problem is Watson's a certain holdout if he's traded and everyone knows it.  He'll wind up with the Jets, Panthers, or maybe the 49ers.

I'm not sure LA is the team that got fleeced here.  Goff's contract is ludicrous, and the Rams weren't going to be able to draft his replacement with no first round pick this year anyway.  Stafford is underrated; he's never had good coaching in Detroit.

The deal also will send the next two years’ first round picks and a third, meaning the Rams will not have a first round selection in 2021, 2022, or 2023. It means it will be eight years since Los Angeles has selected a first-rounder in 2016, who was...Jared Goff.

Watson has a no-trade clause.  AND his contract extension is *huge* with $110M guaranteed.  The combination means the potential destinations are getting very narrowly constrained.

The Rams' front office comes out of this looking awful.  This is now 2 *bungled* contracts that have cost the team enormously...the first was Gurley's.  It did work out for a year, sure, but they've overpaid for non-production.  This trade for Stafford has to lead to a Super Bowl, tho, or it's a bust IMO.  They gave up too much otherwise, but they had no choice. Goff HAD to go, I think was their thinking...but that's just showing the moves a few years ago were bad. premature.

The draft picks, and the assumption that Goff is *not* expected to be a playoff-level QB (particularly in Detroit)...the Rams are in "win NOW" mode and the Lions are in full reset mode...which they'll never admit, of course.

The one advantage is that *if* Stafford can be the answer...debatable...in the next 2 years, he's actually not that expensive.  $20M, then $23M.  Goff's salary is significantly higher.  But Stafford's contract is up after 2022, and if he can win, well, we'll see.  He turns 33 in a week, so he'll be 35 at the start of the next contract.  He probably won't get a longer deal, but might get something closer to $30M if he and the Rams do well.  So the Rams might have some maneuvering room in the next couple years.  Downside...they don't get the cheap years of the good young players because, well...no first round draft picks.

So the Rams seem one key injury away from the whole thing exploding in their faces.  Perhaps Stafford gives them a path to a deep playoff run, but it feels like it's a very narrow one.

FWIW Stafford never missed a game until he literally broke his back in 2019.  He has a reputation for toughness at least.

Yeah.  I think at this point, with Stafford at QB and with the Rams' receiver corps, and their defense, at this time they're the favorite for the NFC West next season.  Obviously lots of stuff happens between now and next season, but if they're in "Win Now" mode ... well, they seem to have done themselves quite a favor.

After a few years for people to scout him out, and once the Rams no longer had a star RB for him to hand the ball to, everyone paying attention has learned that Goff has some serious limitations in terms of responding to pressure that he hasn't improved on in his time in the league.  A fresh never-played QB almost certainly has comparable limitations, but since he's not been scouted, you don't know what those are and you're not going to figure them out in a playoff game.  If Goff had gone the entire game against Seattle in the playoffs, I think he would have given the game away.  Seattle did not know how to make his backup give the game away, and so the Rams advanced.

John McClain, a reporter for the Houston Chronicle, reported this today Re: a Watson trade from the Texans: "The Rams-Lions trade will have nothing to do with a Watson trade if the Texans do it. They'll want 2 ones, 2 twos and 2 young defensive starters, at the least. Watson, 25, under contract, great QB, team leader, beloved by fans, pillar of the community. Start with the Jets."

QB rankings are always questionable, but...Watson is top 5, while Stafford was 12 and Goff 19...which is getting perilously close to disastrous.  20 and 21...Lock and Trubisky.

But that's a Herschel Walker trade waiting to happen, IMO.  And if you're talking a bad team like the Jets, it's a HORRIBLE idea.  You could put any HoF QB, in their prime, out there and with the Jets' roster, they'd be the second coming of Manning.

Archie, that is.

Now, now, let's not forget how awful Peyton was in his final year. He got benched for Brock Osweiler. Pretty much says it all.

And Drew Lock is ahead of Mitch Trubisky? Woo-hoo!
