Lord Liaden
*Shrug* The examples I gave had nothing to do with screaming over racism, or screaming in general. Except in the sense of cheering and applauding a positive depiction of their "group" and what they value that they almost never had before, without denigrating any other group (well, maybe a few gentle digs). I suppose my own experience informs my perception of this situation. I came to manhood in one of the very few places and times in modern Canada or the United States where a white, middle-class, heterosexual, English-speaking male could experience even a little of what it feels like to be a minority: the French-majority Canadian province of Quebec during the 1970s. Constantly being told, in a few large but many subtle ways, that you're an outsider, you don't belong, what you are makes you somehow less.... it alters how you think of yourself, and everyone else. It can weigh on you, fill you with self-doubt and resentment; or it can spur you to try harder, to show those others how wrong they are. And when you see something or someone bucking that trend, making a statement that who and what you are matter and have value, you feel proud. If I hadn't had that experience I never would have grasped that. Starlord, Pattern Ghost and slikmar
